Three-dimensional distribution of trabecular bone density and cortical thickness in the distal humerus

One major barrier to osteosynthesis in distal humeral fractures is poor bone quality. This study was an attempt to measure the bone quality in the distal humerus.We measured the distribution of total bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular BMD (tBMD), and cortical thickness (CTh) in the distal humerus using peripheral quantitive computed tomography. Four slices in the infracondylar, supracondylar, and distal disphyseal regions of 25 human cadaver humeri were investigated.Total BMD decreased continuously from the distal diaphysis to the trochlea. Biangular fractures of the mandible

Summary Introduction Bifocal fractures of the mandible often associate the angle and condyle or symphysis. Little data is available on biangular fractures. The authors had for aim to study their characteristics and to suggest an adapted management. Material and methods We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients operated on for a biangular fracture from January 2005 to December 2009. The impact of a third molar was evaluated using Pell and Gregory's and Shiller's classifications. Clinical performance of a new medullary humeral nail: antegrade versus retrograde insertion.

Objective A new intramedullary nail system for humeral shaft fractures is evaluated to determine whether retrograde nailing is as reliable as antegrade nailing. Study design Prospective multicenter nonrandomized clinical study. Patients Eighty-four patients with acute humeral shaft fractures were nailed with the new unreamed humeral nail (UHN) system. Radiological analysis, operative management and functional outcome of open book pelvic lesions: a 13-year cohort study.

Abstract We present the clinical and radiological outcome of a 13-year cohort study of 38 open book pelvic lesions. All patients were treated in one Level I Trauma centre. In the posterior pelvis, sacro-iliac diastasis was seen in 31 patients, sacral fracture in 7. In all patients with sacro-iliac diastasis, the pubic bone was inferiorly displaced on the primary ap pelvic overview on the side of injury. All but one patient was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the symphysis pubis. Bone age determination based on the study of the medial extremity of the clavicle

The development of the medial clavicular epiphysis and its fusion with the clavicular shaft have been a subject of medical research since the second decade of this century. Computed tomography provides the imaging modality of choice in analyzing the maturation process of the sternal end of the clavicle. In a retrospective study, we analyzed normal development in 380 individuals under the age of 30 years. The appearance of an epiphyseal ossification center occurred between ages 11 and 22 years. Internal Fixation in Postpartum Symphysis Pubis Rupture: Report of Three Cases

We present three patients with postpartum symphysis pubis rupture whose severe complaints persisted after conservative treatment. All three ruptures were stabilized with open reduction and internal fixation. There were no postoperative problems, and implants were removed after a mean period of six months. Patients were free of complaints after implant removal. In select cases, operative treatment of postpartum symphysiolysis may be indicated.

Abstract Nanofluidic sensing devices promise high performance by overcoming issues of mass transport of analyte molecules to the sensing surface, whilst micro-porous membranes promise high sensitivity due to a large surface for their capture. Ellipsometric study of the physisorption of benzene on graphite

1987

The optical thickness of benzene on the (001) surface of a graphite single crystal has been studied by ellipsometry. Ellipsometric adsorption isotherms have been measured in the temperature range from 180 to 290 K. The maximum thickness of the adsorbed benzene film is constant in this temperature range and compares favourably with the value expected for one monolayer of molecules lying flat on the surface.

Watching adsorption and electron beam induced decomposition on the model system Mo(CO)(6)/Cu(111) by X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopies

Abstract An in-depth study of the first steps of electron beam assisted growth of Mo from molybdenum hexacarbonyl on Cu(1 1 1) has been carried out exploiting the complementarity of X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. Frank van der Merwe (2D) growth mode has been observed for the completion of the two first monolayers of adsorbed molecules through a simple physisorption process. Irradiation of the Mo(CO)6 deposit by 1 keV electron beam induces a modification of molybdenum coordination, the average number of C-neighbors decreasing from 6 to 3.
