2020

Praising through Intertext. On Jakob Liefer’s Literary Technique in the Neo-Latin Epic Bellum Sundense

2019

Praising through Intertext. On Jakob Liefer’s Literary Technique in the Neo‑Latin Epic Bellum SundenseThis paper examines Jakob Liefer’s (1571‑1655) method of composing a carmen novo modo, that is a combination of laus urbis, epic, and cento. It demonstrates how Liefer systematically employs allusions and citations to turn his account of the historic Margrave War (1308‑1317) into a praise of the city of Stralsund and its inhabitants. The analysis focuses on the work’s intertextual engagement with the characters and settings of Lucan’s Pharsalia and Vergil’s Aeneid. Liefer not only borrows from canonical texts to put Stralsund on the same exalted level as Massilia and Troy respectively, but …

Manifest Sapiehów z 6 marca 1702 roku

2017

The second half of the 17th century history of the Great Duchy of Lithuania was dominated by the hegemony of two families: the Pac family and the Sapieha family. The latter managed to seize control over all spheres of public life and made decisions regarding the attitude of Lithuania with regard to the king and the Republic of Poland. The period of domination of the Sapieha family dates from 1685 to the early 1690s., when the plans of Jan III Sobieski, who attempted to build a political force that could withstand and counterbalance the influence of the Sapieha family, started to come to fruition. This, in turn, resulted in armed conflicts in the late 1690s aimed against the Sapieha family a…

Optimizing systemic therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: the key role of liver function

2022

The number of effective systemic therapies for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rapidly increasing, and the advent of immunotherapy has changed the treatment paradigm for these patients, leading to significantly improved survival outcomes. However, many patients with HCC will continue to receive tyrosine kinase inhibitors, partly because of contraindications to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Currently, the best sequential first- and second-line systemic treatment remains elusive. Maintenance of optimal liver function is crucial, it is likely to impinge on temporary or permanent treatment discontinuation, and should also be considered when defining the treatment seq…

Should organs from hepatitis C-positive donors be used in hepatitis C-negative recipients for liver transplantation?

2018

Given the scarcity of donated organs and the frequency of death on the waiting list, strategies that could improve the available supply of high-quality liver grafts are much needed. Direct-acting antiviral agent (DAA) regimens have proved to be highly effective to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV), even in the setting of posttransplantation. The question arises as to whether transplant communities should consider the utilization of HCV-positive donors into HCV-negative recipients. This review summarizes risk of transmission, treatment options with success rate, and ethical considerations for usage of HCV-positive donors. Liver Transplantation 24 831-840 2018 AASLD.
