Out in the open : behavior’s effect on predation risk and thermoregulation by aposematic caterpillars
2020
Abstract Warning coloration should be under strong stabilizing selection but often displays considerable intraspecific variation. Opposing selection on color by predators and temperature is one potential explanation for this seeming paradox. Despite the importance of behavior for both predator avoidance and thermoregulation, its role in mediating selection by predators and temperature on warning coloration has received little attention. Wood tiger moth caterpillars, Arctia plantaginis, have aposematic coloration, an orange patch on the black body. The size of the orange patch varies considerably: individuals with larger patches are safer from predators, but having a small patch is beneficia…
Waste activated sludge dewaterability: comparative evaluation of sludge derived from CAS and MBR systems
2016
Nowadays, sludge dewatering is one of the greatest operational cost to wastewater treatment cycle. Specifically, 1t of fresh sludge to be disposed is composed, on average, by 0.25 - 0.30t of suspended solids, with an average cost for treatment and disposal around 280 - 470 €/t of suspended solids. Despite several technologies have been developed with the focus to reduce also the specific sludge production, still mechanical dewatering represents a crucial step to limit the amount of sludge to be disposed. Many physical–chemical parameters influence the sludge dewaterability: floc structure, particle size, bound water content, surface charge and hydrophobicity, Extracellular Polymeric Substan…
The open metastable structure of a collapsible sand: fabric and bonding
2015
This paper deals with the compositional and textural characteristics determining open metastable structures in the pleistocenic sand outcropping in the Agrigento district (Sicily). The aim of the study was to individuate the bonding types occurring between grains that could generate matric suction phenomena. The composition and microfabric were characterised by means of granulometry, porosimetry, permeability, optical and ESEM-EDS microscopy, thermogravimetry and XR diffractometry, electric conductivity, and ionic chromatography. The data thus acquired show that the skeleton of the sand is constituted mostly by bioclasts and microfossils, calcite and quartz monocrystalline grains. Moreover,…
Detection of RET rearrangements in papillary thyroid carcinoma using RT-PCR and FISH techniques - A molecular and clinical analysis.
2019
Abstract Introduction Oncogenic BRAF and RAS mutations as well as multiple known (and yet unknown) RET fusion oncogenes comprise the majority of causative molecular alterations in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Apparently “mutation-negative” PTCs encompass a heterogenous group impeding analysis of prognostic significance of underlying genetics. Material and methods BRAF wild type PTC tissue of 56 patients was analyzed using two established methods: hybrid-specific RT-PCR for the predominant rearrangement RET/PTC1 and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Clinical features of the cases with and without RET rearrangement were compared (patient age, gender, tumor size, focality, lymph …
The embryo-placental CD15-positive "vasculogenic zones" as a source of propranolol-sensitive pediatric vascular tumors.
2015
Abstract Objective Propranolol-induced involution is a unique biological feature of some pediatric vascular tumors, for instance infantile hemangioma (IH), cerebral cavernoma or chorioangioma. Currently, the cellular origin of these distinct tumors is unclear. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that propranolol-responsive vascular tumors are derived from common vessel-forming CD15 + progenitor cells which occur in early gestation. The aim of this study was to identify the tumor-relevant CD15 + progenitors at the early stages of embryo-placental development. Materials and methods Human embryo-placental units of 4–8 weeks gestation and pediatric vascular tumors were tested for expression…
Determination of meropenem in endotracheal tubes by in-tube solid phase microextraction coupled to capillary liquid chromatography with diode array d…
2017
Meropenem is a widely used antimicrobial for the treatment of infections associated with the use of invasive medical devices in intensive care unit patients. These treatments are not always effective, in fact, in-vitro studies have demonstrated the difficulty of antimicrobials to penetrate into the biofilm, however in-vivo studies of the effect of these compounds is a trend, mostly because of the complexity of pulmonary samples extracted from ETTs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate in-tube solid phase microextraction (in-tube SPME) coupled to capillary liquid chromatography (CapLC) with DAD to determine meropenem in Errs in order to estimate the penetration capability i…
Angiogenic response in an in vitro model of dog microvascular endothelial cells stimulated with antigenic extracts from Dirofilaria immitis adult wor…
2019
Abstract Background Angiogenesis can occur under pathological conditions when stimuli such as inflammation, vascular obstruction or hypoxia exist. These stimuli are present in cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis (Dirofilaria immitis). The aim of this study was to analyze the capacity of D. immitis antigens to modify the expression of angiogenic factors and trigger the formation of pseudocapillaries (tube-like structures) in an in vitro model of endothelial cells. Methods The expression of VEGF-A, sFlt, mEndoglin and sEndoglin in cultures of canine microvascular endothelial cells stimulated with extract of adult worms of D. immitis obtained from an untreated dog (DiSA) and from a dog treated for …
IL-17A mediated endothelial breach promotes metastasis formation
2015
Abstract The role of the IL23/IL17A axis in tumor–immune interactions is a matter of controversy. Although some suggest that IL17A-producing T cells (TH17) can suppress tumor growth, others report that IL17A and IL23 accelerate tumor growth. Here, we systematically assessed the impact of IL17A-secreting lymphocytes in several murine models of tumor lung metastasis. Genetic fate mapping revealed that IL17A was secreted within lung metastases predominantly by γδ T cells, whereas TH17 cells were virtually absent. Using different tumor models, we found Il17a−/− mice to consistently develop fewer pulmonary tumor colonies. IL17A specifically increased blood vessel permeability and the expression …
Diabetic microangiopathy: Pathogenetic insights and novel therapeutic approaches.
2017
Diabetic microangiopathy, including retinopathy, is characterized by abnormal growth and leakage of small blood vessels, resulting in local edema and functional impairment of the depending tissues. Mechanisms leading to the impairment of microcirculation in diabetes are multiple and still largely unclear. However, a dysregulated vascular regeneration appears to play a key role. In addition, oxidative and hyperosmolar stress, as well as the activation of inflammatory pathways triggered by advanced glycation end-products and toll-like receptors, have been recognized as key underlying events. Here, we review recent knowledge on cellular and molecular pathways of microvascular disease in diabet…
