Maternal Employment and Happiness: The Effect of Non-Participation and Part-Time Employment on Mothers' Life Satisfaction
2009
"In contrast to unemployment, the effect of non-participation and parttime employment on subjective well-being has much less frequently been the subject of economists' investigations. In Germany, many women with dependent children are involuntarily out of the labor force or in part-time employment because of family constraints (e.g., due to lack of available and appropriate childcare). Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) Study, this paper analyzes the impact of involuntary familyrelated non-participation and part-time employment on mothers' life satisfaction. Controlling for unobserved individual fixed effects, I find that both the pecuniary effects (foregone earnings) an…
Latin-American Studies on Well-Being
2014
This chapter aims to describe Latin-American studies on well-being from two different perspectives: the hedonic (life satisfaction, positive and negative emotions) and the eudaimonic (psychological well-being) traditions. An analysis of research articles published between 1998 and 2012 was conducted. The introduced key words were: happiness, life satisfaction and well-being and the search was limited by language of publication restricted to Spanish and Portuguese. Results were analyzed by country of origin, type of well-being study and the inclusion of cultural variables. Those studies focused on what people understood about psychological well-being and the meaning assigned to it are descri…
L’isola delle città felici : riflessi d’Europa nella letteratura politica siciliana (secoli XVII-XIX)
2012
2013
[EN] The paper analyses the accounts of two trips around the world conducted in the last two decades of the Seventeenth-century and published the one in Naples, 1699-1700, the other in mexico, a decade earlier. the first case was led by giovanni francesco gemelli Careri, a traveller vilified as fake by whom gave the final impetus to the genre of travel literature from french and British Enlightement. the second case was led by Alonso Ramirez, a traveller who was considered for three centuries just a fictional character. though two texts set in a peripheral place and time, from the point of view of European geopolitics of the moment and of the literary genre of travel writing as well, our ai…

Most studies have treated grandiose narcissism as a unidimensional construct and investigated its associations in cross-sectional convenience samples. The present research systematically addresses these limitations by investigating the associations of agentic and antagonistic aspects of narcissism in the interpersonal, intrapersonal, and institutional domains, cross-sectionally and longitudinally in a population-representative sample. We used data (N = 1,526) from the representative, longitudinal German Socio-economic Panel study innovation sample (SOEP-IS). Both pre-registered and exploratory research questions regarding interpersonal, intrapersonal, and institutional outcomes of agentic a…
Synthesis and characterization of biotinylated and photoactivatable neuroleptics. Novel bifunctional probes for dopamine receptors
1992
Abstract We have synthesized and characterized a series of novel derivatives of established antagonists of the neurotransmitter dopamine, i.e. butyrophenones, hexahydrocarbolines and phenothiazenes. All derivatives were biotinylated, some of them carried an additional (photoactivatable) azido group. In the case of butyrophenones, the structural modifications were introduced at the aliphatic keto group and/or the heterocyclic ring system, both modifications resulting in significant decreases in binding affinity to dopamine D 2 and dopamine D 1 receptor subtypes. Biotinylation of hexahydrocarbolines significantly increased their binding affinity to D 1 receptors, with the affinity for D 2 rec…
Presence of Genital Spines in a Male Corynosoma cetaceum Johnston and Best, 1942 (Acanthocephala)
2002
We collected 83 females and 80 males of Corynosoma cetaceum from 2 common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, collected in northern Patagonia (Argentina). Worms were most similar to specimens collected in other South American localities. However, 1 male had 2 spines adjacent to the genital pore and isolated from the rest of body spines. This finding confirms the recent reassignment of C. cetaceum to Corynosoma. Absence of genital spines is suggested to be avoided as the sole criterion to exclude specimens from Corynosoma or Andracantha. Dopamine restores limbic memory loss, dendritic spine structure, and NMDAR-dependent LTD in the nucleus accumbens of alcohol-withdrawn rats
2018
Alcohol abuse leads to aberrant forms of emotionally salient memory, i.e., limbic memory, that promote escalated alcohol consumption and relapse. Accordingly, activity-dependent structural abnormalities are likely to contribute to synaptic dysfunctions that occur from suddenly ceasing chronic alcohol consumption. Here we show that alcohol-dependent male rats fail to perform an emotional-learning task during abstinence but recover their functioning byl-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanin (l-DOPA) administration during early withdrawal.l-DOPA also reverses the selective loss of dendritic “long thin” spines observed in medium spiny neurons of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell of alcohol-dependent rats d…
