Compton scattering off pions and electromagnetic polarizabilities
2019
The electric ($\alpha_\pi$) and magnetic ($\beta_\pi$) Compton polarizabilities of both the charged and the neutral pion are of fundamental interest in the low-energy sector of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Pion polarizabilities affect the shape of the $\gamma\pi\to\gamma\pi$ Compton scattering angular distribution at back scattering angles and $\gamma\gamma\to\pi\pi$ absolute cross sections. Theory derivations are given of the $\gamma\pi\to\gamma\pi$ Compton scattering differential cross section, dispersion relations, and sum rules in terms of the polarizabilities. We review experimental charged and neutral polarizability studies and theoretical predictions. The $\pi^0$ polarizabilities we…
First measurement of helicity-dependent cross sections in π0η photoproduction from quasi-free nucleons
2018
The helicity-dependent cross sections for the photoproduction of $\pi^0\eta$ pairs have been measured for the first time. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS calorimeter. The experiment used a polarized deuterated butanol target and a circularly polarized photon beam. This arrangement allowed the $\sigma_{1/2}$ (photon and target spin antiparallel) and $\sigma_{3/2}$ (parallel spins) components to be measured for quasi-free production of $\pi^0\eta$ pairs off protons and neutrons. The main finding is that the two helicity components contribute identically, within uncertainties, for both participant pr…
A short-orbit spectrometer for low-energy pion detection in electroproduction experiments at MAMI
2017
A new Short-Orbit Spectrometer (SOS) has been constructed and installed within the experimental facility of the A1 collaboration at Mainz Microtron (MAMI), with the goal to detect low-energy pions. It is equipped with a Browne-Buechner magnet and a detector system consisting of two helium-ethane based drift chambers and a scintillator telescope made of five layers. The detector system allows detection of pions in the momentum range of 50 - 147 MeV/c, which corresponds to 8.7 - 63 MeV kinetic energy. The spectrometer can be placed at a distance range of 54 - 66 cm from the target center. Two collimators are available for the measurements, one having 1.8 msr aperture and the other having 7 ms…
Measurement of pion and proton response and longitudinal shower profiles up to 20 nuclear interaction lengths with the ATLAS Tile calorimeter
2010
The response of pions and protons in the energy range of 20–180 GeV, produced at CERN's SPS H8 test-beam line in the ATLAS iron–scintillator Tile hadron calorimeter, has been measured. The test-beam configuration allowed the measurement of the longitudinal shower development for pions and protons up to 20 nuclear interaction lengths. It was found that pions penetrate deeper in the calorimeter than protons. However, protons induce showers that are wider laterally to the direction of the impinging particle. Including the measured total energy response, the pion-to-proton energy ratio and the resolution, all observations are consistent with a higher electromagnetic energy fraction in pion-indu…
First search for extremely high energy cosmogenic neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
2010
We report on the results of the search for extremely-high energy (EHE) neutrinos with energies above $10^7$ GeV obtained with the partially ($\sim$30%) constructed IceCube in 2007. From the absence of signal events in the sample of 242.1 days of effective livetime, we derive a 90% C.L. model independent differential upper limit based on the number of signal events per energy decade at $E^2 \phi_{\nu_e+\nu_\mu+\nu_\tau}\simeq 1.4 \times 10^{-6}$ GeV cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ for neutrinos in the energy range from $3\times10^7$ to $3\times10^9$ GeV.
Measurements of forward proton production with incident protons and charged pions on nuclear targets at the CERN Proton Synchroton
2010
Measurements of the double-differential proton production cross-section d(2 sigma)/dpd Omega in the range of momentum 0.5 GeV/c <= p < 8.0 GeV/c and angle 0.05 rad <= theta < 0.25 rad in collisions of charged pions and protons on beryllium, carbon, aluminium, copper, tin, tantalum, and lead are presented. The data were taken with the large acceptance HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. Incident particles were identified by an elaborate system of beam detectors and impinged on a target of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The tracking and identification of the produced particles was performed using the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment. Results are o…
Neutral pion and η meson production at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV
2018
Neutral pion and η meson production in the transverse momentum range 1 < p T < 20 GeV / c have been measured at midrapidity by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in central and semicentral Pb-Pb collisions at √ s NN = 2.76 TeV. These results were obtained using the photon conversion method as well as the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) and Electromagnetic Calorimeter detectors. The results extend the upper p T reach of the previous ALICE π 0 measurements from 12 to 20 GeV / c and present the first measurement of η meson production in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. The η / π 0 ratio is similar for the two centralities and reaches at high p T a plateau value of 0.457 ± 0 . 0…
Isoscalar S-wave π–π interaction in the nuclear medium
1998
The s-wave isoscalar π π scattering amplitude in a nuclear medium has been evaluated using a non-perturbative unitary coupled channels method and the standard chiral Lagrangians. The method is successful describing the π π properties in vacuum, in the scalar-isoscalar channel up to 1.2 GeV giving rise to poles in the T matrix for the ƒ0(980) and the σ. The extension of the method to the nuclear medium implies the renormalization of the pions in the medium and also the introduction of interaction terms related to contact terms in the πN → ππN reaction. Coherent π0 electroproduction
1993
Abstract We analyze the coherent electroproduction of neutral pions in nuclei. We find that this process does not contribute to the longitudinal response function for spin saturated nuclei and the dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal pion angle is particularly simple and given by 1− ϵ cos 2 o π . This angular dependence could be useful to isolate the coherent contribution in future experiments, offering an advantage over coherent photoproduction. The Δ-peak is considerably moved to lower pion energies and appreciably modified due to medium corrections.
