Problemas Descriptivos de Fracciones

2016

How Body and Soul Interact with the Spiritual Mind: Multimodal Cognitive Semiotics of Religious Discourse

2008

Cognitive Linguistics as an enterprise provides new theoretical and methodological instruments in understanding the relationship between people's thoughts and the language they use. Spiritual and religious experiences (particularly the ones involving some type of revelation from or communication with a transcendent being) are especially interesting since they involve some type of external, physically invisible force or agent, contributing an "ineffable" quality to the phenomenon. However, people can and do describe such events, and metaphors and blends pervade the representations of certain concepts of the transcendental when attempting to talk about such abstract ideas. One of the main ten…

Analysing Intercultural Dialogue Through Conceptual Densities

2020

In this chapter, we exemplify our methodological approach to analysing ‘densities’ of interrelated concepts in European education policy documents. We scrutinize instances where many of the core concepts of intercultural dialogue appear in the documents at the same time. Four core educational themes and four longer excerpts from the selected policy documents are examined in more detail. The chosen documents deal especially with multilingualism, migration, history teaching, and lifelong learning. The analysis of the conceptual densities in the chosen excerpts indicates how the meanings of intercultural dialogue are constructed through the conceptual frameworks and co-occurrences of their cor…

On the rhetoric and relevance of IS research paradigms: a conceptual framework and some propositions

2003

This paper discusses the relevance of IS research with respect to the rhetoric associated with three IS research paradigms in use - positivism, constructivism/interpretivism and critical research. The discussion is framed in terms of the following dimensions: ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, relationship between theory and practice, and the role of the researcher in the research process. Based on this discussion, the authors propose a theoretical framework to study the relationship of the espoused assumptions of a researcher's perspective with the degree of relevance of their knowledge claims to various stakeholders. In conclusion, some key propositions are eluci…

2018

Currently, there are various definitions for extreme sports and researchers in the field have been unable to advance a consensus on what exactly constitutes an 'extreme' sport. Traditional theory-led explanations, such as edgeworks, sensation seeking and psychoanalysis, have led to inadequate conceptions. These frameworks have failed to capture the depth and nuances of experiences of individuals who refute the notions of risk-taking, adrenaline- and thrill-seeking or death-defiance. Instead, participants are reported to describe experiences as positive, deeply meaningful and life-enhancing. The constant evolution of emerging participation styles and philosophies, expressed within and across…

The reception of Marx's thought in the young Habermas

2018

ABSTRACT The article analyzes the influence of Marx's thought on the for…

What is agency? Conceptualizing professional agency at work

2013

Abstract The concept of agency has become widely used in learning research, especially in studies addressing professional and workplace learning, but also in policy discussion on how to promote individually meaningful careers and life-courses amid rapid changes in working life. The purpose of this article is to provide a critical review of the multidisciplinary concept of agency, and to suggest a fruitful conceptualization of professional agency at work. The following questions are addressed: (i) How have the ontological characteristics and manifestations of agency been understood? (ii) How have the relationships between the social and individual aspects of agency been understood? We examin…

Recognition in multicultural societies. Intergroup relations as second-order recognition

2015

Since the 1990s, the notion of social recognition has developed into a key concept for sociological theory. Recognition theory seems especially promising as a means of understanding intercultural conflicts, as the sociology of intercultural relations often addresses claims of recognition of a specific identity that is different from that of the main society. The aim of this article is to show that recognition theory can be used as a key concept in examining group inclusion in multicultural societies. Nevertheless, the existing theoretical approaches to recognition are insufficient for that purpose. Therefore, I develop my own approach to the recognition of minority groups as second-order re…

Discussions of Part I Chapters

2016

This chapter is an opportunity for one of the authors of this book to question the other two authors in the light of issues raised in Chaps. 2– 5. It constitutes both a follow-up to discussions between authors which occurred over the writing process, and emergent issues—new discussions once the book was almost complete. Some fundamental issues are addressed, about the birth of mathematics (and its deep links with the birth of writing), the relationships between mathematics and other sciences, the interactions between conjecture and proof, and the role of visualisation and of gestures. The text is kept short in order to provoke the readers to reflect on these issues rather than for the autho…
