Moral Neuroeducation from a Phylogenetic, Ontogenetic and Functional Perspective
2019
The aim of this chapter is to consider a series of key contributions to moral neuroeducation from a threefold phylogenetic, ontogenetic and functional perspective. I will argue that an individual’s transition from social to moral behaviour occurs through the concurrence of certain faculties with a specific degree of complexity. With regard to both phylogenesis and ontogenesis, certain kinds of prosocial behaviours become moral in certain specific conditions. The study of these conditions reveals which faculties are involved in moral behaviour, how they do so, and how they relate to one another. A third functional perspective thereby becomes necessary to explain how morality functions at bot…
How Can the Protoconsciousness Hypothesis Contribute to Philosophical Theories of Consciousness and the Self?
2014
In his William James lectures on Dream Consciousness, Allan Hobson provides a rich and multi-faceted introduction to state-of-the-art findings from sleep and dream research, as well as an overview of his own wide-ranging contributions to this field. It is no exaggeration to say that his work has shaped contemporary theories of sleep and dreaming like no other. But he has done even more: by showing how his work on dreaming fits into broader theories of consciousness (Hobson et al. 2000) and psychotic wake states (Hobson 1999), he has repeatedly emphasized its implications for the theoretical understanding of consciousness itself. His long-standing willingness to connect the fields of sleep a…
Concepciones alternativas y dificultades de aprendizaje en electrostática : selección de cuestiones elaboradas para su detección y tratamiento
2021
The work we are presenting here tries to summarise the contributions made by research on the ideas and difficulties of students within the field of Electrostatics. These researches reveal that the concepts introduced in this domain, such as electric field and potential, are necessary prerequisites so as to acquire a scientific vision of electromagnetic phenomena. Thus, taking into account the importance of the concepts involved for a scientific vision of the circuits of continuous current and, in general, of the electromagnetic theory, we think it is important for teachers to have a first idea on which are the most problematic conceptions or at least, those that have been studied most.
A New, Better BET: Rescuing and Revising Basic Emotion Theory
2018
Basic Emotion Theory, or BET, has dominated the affective sciences for decades (Ekman, 1972, 1992, 1999; Ekman and Davidson, 1994; Griffiths, 2013; Scarantino and Griffiths, 2011). It has been highly influential, driving a number of empirical lines of research (e.g., in the context of facial expression detection, neuroimaging studies and evolutionary psychology). Nevertheless, BET has been criticized by philosophers, leading to calls for it to be jettisoned entirely (Colombetti, 2014; Hufendiek, 2016). This paper defuses those criticisms. In addition, it shows that we have good reason to retain BET. Finally, it reviews and puts to rest worries that BET's commitment to affect programs render…

Longino’s Theory of Objectivity and Commercialized Research
2015
In this paper, I shall examine Helen Longino’s view on the objectivity of science and study how it can be applied to the evaluation of current scientific practices. By discussing two prominent cases in biomedical research, I articulate some epistemically alarming features of commercialized research and highlight the importance of paying attention to the context of scientific inquiry. In addition, I claim that the examined cases can help uncover philosophically interesting empirical work on extra-scientific mechanisms influencing research practices.
Honouring the opening: Unfolding the rich ground between the philosophical thinking of Martin Heidegger and practice-based empirical work
2021
The aim of this article is to bring philosophical thinking closer to practice-based empirical work. Using Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, it offers a bridge between these two worlds, attempting to provide philosophical depth to the findings of a hermeneutic phenomenological study. This process unfolded through the appearance of three intertwined, potential, meaningful modes of being in the lifeworld: space as a condition for being and being for worlding the world; temporal and spatial self-being, the existence of multiple selves in time and space; and suffering and thriving as modes of being. The article extends the dialogue and concludes with key reflections and insight for research practic…
