Isomorphism of Pitch and Time

2016

An ongoing debate regarding the perception of pitch and time is whether information on the two dimensions is processed independently or interactively. To study this, we tested whether listeners prefer sequences in which tonally stable tones coincide with rhythmically stable tones. Our study builds on a noted isomorphism between pitch intervals in the diatonic scale and tone durations in the standard rhythm originating in Ghana. This isomorphism is shown in a) the maximally even structure of 2212221 and b) the cyclic nature with seven possible starting points. To better understand pitch-time relationship, we conducted two experiments. In Experiment 1, we created seven scales based on the dia…

Pitch tilt rendering for an 8-DOF driving simulator

2015

International audience; Tilt coordination technique is used for reproducing a sustained linear acceleration in driving simulation by tilting the simulator cabin. Thus a part of gravity is interpreted as a horizontal acceleration. Between the slow rotational motion limited by the rotational perception threshold of semi-circular canals of vestibular system and the fast change of acceleration to render, the design of coupling motions of rotation and translation plays a critical role in the realism of driving simulator. We present here an experiment focusing on longitudinal accelerations rendering with pitch tilt coordination technique. Eight drivers experienced the same accelerations and decel…

Transient stability simulation of a fixed speed wind turbine by Matlab/Simulink

2007

This paper describes the dynamic behavior of a typical fixed speed wind turbine connected to the grid; the model is developed in the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink and created as a modular structure. The pitch control system is used for stabilization of the wind turbine at grid faults. In this way, voltage stability of the system with grid-connected wind turbines can be improved by using blade-angle control for a temporary reduction of the wind turbine power during a short-circuit fault in the grid. This paper shows a new variable control for maintaining of voltage stability, when a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the affected line. In th…

Comparison of Pitch Range in Finnish (L1) and Russian (L2)

2007

The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the pitch range of a speaker can vary according to the language he speaks. The hypothesis is tested on Finnish university students studying Russian as a foreign language before and after their stay in Russia. First, the global pitch range (max – min) is determined. Second, the pitch range in different types of utterances (declarative, question, exclamation) is examined by superimposing pitch contours. The results indicate that the learners have a narrower pitch range and a less variable pitch than native speakers both in L1 and L2. However, the results also suggest that L2 experience seems to help most students to produce a more native-…

Looking for ancient wine as gift for the Prince of Lavau (5th c. BC)

2017

International audience; The excavations at Lavau brought to light a large monumental necropolis with a central burial mound overlying an undisturbed chieftain’s grave from the end of the Early Iron Age or the beginning of the Late Iron Age. In the funerary chamber rich grave furniture accompanied the dead: a bronze cauldron containing serving and drinking vessels of ceramic, silver, and bronze, two bronze plates, and a cist. As there were visible deposits present on the inner surface of the cauldron, a series of samples were taken from different parts of the cauldron and the locally made oenochoe. Using a double-step methodology of extraction and structural analysis by GC-MS, the main bioma…

Educational Hackathon : Innovation Contest for Innovation Pedagogy

2018

This paper addresses the educational hackthon as innovation pedagogy method for teaching fuzzy front end of innovation (FFEI) in higher education institutions (HEIs). Specifically it focuses on the process design and execution. This study is based on the idea that educational hackathons are a specific type of innovation contest aimed at teaching and learning, thus incorporating a set of design variables. Therefore, the paper reports a case study according to those variables in HEI teaching in university-industrycollaboration. This paper presents both the process description along with students’ learning and feedback, i.e. the development suggestions for the method. Presenting conclusions fo…

ERPs to pitch changes: a result of reduced responses to standard tones in rabbits.

1996

EVENT-RELATED potentials (ERPs) were recorded in rabbits when pitch deviant tones occurred in a series of standard tones (oddball situation). In control recordings, the deviant tones were presented without the standard tones (deviant-alone situation). In the oddball situation, significant difference ERPs (deviant ERPs - standard ERPs) could be found in the hippocampal and cerebellar recordings but not in the visual cortex. All the ERPs to the deviant stimuli observed in the oddball situation were also present in the deviant-alone situation. The difference ERPs were therefore based on reduced responses to the standards. The results are discussed in the context of a mismatch negativity (MMN) …

Roentgenological observations on vocal fold length-changes with special reference to register transition and open/covered voice

1992

This paper examines the length-changes of the vocal folds as a function of voice pitch. Changes in normalized vocal fold elongation (strain) were measured indirectly from calcification points in several laryngeal structures from roentgenological exposures during singing. Changes in vocal fold strain are shown to occur mainly in the register transition area, i.e. the area within which all register changes take place. Changes in vocal fold strain appeared similar in male and female subjects. Evidence for different strain patterns in covered and open singing is presented for female subjects: Strain is higher in non-singers and (“incorrect”) open voice, lower in singers and (“correct”) covered …

Adaptive memory representations of musical tempo and pitch

2009

Recent studies showed that the perception of extremely shifted versions of familiar pieces of music affects judgements about the original tempo and pitch. This paper aims to give an overview on musical adaptation effects (MAEs) for musical tempo and pitch. The focus is set on the questions if the recently found MAEs are generally comparable between the tempo and the pitch domain, and if they can be found to the same extent. In a series of eight empirical studies (N = 288, mean age = 26, SD = 8.6, 78 % female participants) the influence of extremely shifted versions (tempo-accelerated or pitch-shifted) of audio signals on memory representations was tested. Within this paper the focus will be…
