Crystal inclusions in subepithelial fibroblasts of the brood pouch of sea horses (hippocampus kuda)

In the subepithelial connective tissue of the inactive broodpouch of sea horses (Hippocampus kuda), fibroblasts with striking crystal inclusions are described light microscopically and electron microscopically in the tunica adventitia of capillaries. These very electron dense crystals turn out to be hexagonal prisms of heterogeneous structures. Results of the X-ray microanalysis and comparison with other crystalline cell inclusions so far described allow the conclusion that they contain an iron protein stored as crystals. The structure and genesis of these crystals as well as the possible importance of the iron protein for the biology of these animals are discussed.

Data from: Moving in the Anthropocene: global reductions in terrestrial mammalian movements

Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Vitellogenin, a storage protein, has been extensively studied for its egg-yolk precursor role, and it has been suggested to be fundamentally involved in caste differences in social insects. More than one vitellogenin copy has been reported in several oviparous species, including ants. However, the number and function of different vitellogenins, their phylogenetic relatedness and their role in reproductive queens and non-reproductive workers has been studied in few species only. TGFβ1 is involved in airway inflammation in COPD and in the regulation of muscarinic receptors (mAChRs) expression. We quantified TGFβ1 and Acetylcholine (ACh) concentrations in induced sputum supernatants (ISs) from 10 Healthy Controls (HC), 14 Healthy Smokers (HS) and 16 COPDs.
