Performance Studies of Pixel Hybrid Photon Detectors for the LHCb RICH Counters

2006

The Pixel Hybrid Photon Detector is a vacuum tube with a multi-alkali photo cathode, high voltage cross-focused electron optics and an anode consisting of a silicon pixel detector bump-bonded to a readout CMOS electronic chip fully encapsulated in the device. The Pixel HPD fulfils the requirements of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov counters of the LHCb experiment at LHC. The performances of the Pixel HPD will be discussed with reference to laboratory measurements, Cherenkov light imaging in recent beam tests, image distortions due to a magnetic field.

Characterisation and compensation of magnetic distortions for the pixel Hybrid Photon Detectors of the LHCb RICH

2005

Abstract The LHCb experiment at LHC, optimised for the study of CP violation, has two RICH detectors to provide particle identification in the momentum range ∼ 2 – 100 GeV / c . The stringent requirements on the photon detectors are met by the custom-made pixel Hybrid Photon Detector. The photon detectors need to operate in the fringe field of the LHCb dipole magnet which will produce distortions of the image detected on the pixel chip which is encapsulated inside the HPD. This paper reports on the experimental characterisation of the image distortions caused by an external magnetic flux density. These measurements allow for the development of a parameterisation of the effects and a compens…

Multi-pixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode and wavelength shifting fibre readout of plastic scintillator counters of the EMMA underground experiment

2009

The results of a development of a scintillator counter with wavelength shifting (WLS) fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode readout are presented. The photodiode has a metal-resistor-semiconductor layered structure and operates in the limited Geiger mode. The scintillator counter has been developed for the EMMA underground cosmic ray experiment.

Measurement of the response of Silicon Photomultipliers from single photon detection to saturation

2019

Abstract The development of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) is very dynamic and a large variety of types exists. Important SiPM characteristics include the size and number of pixels, the gain, the photon detection efficiency (PDE), the recovery time, and correlated noise. SiPMs are particularly suitable for single-photon detection and low-intensity exposures. For photon numbers (PDE corrected) reaching the number of pixels, however, the sensors saturate. In this work, we present comprehensive response measurements for state-of-the-art SiPMs using an experimental setup based on a tunable picosecond laser. Several models are applied to the measured response curves, taking particularly correla…

Recent progress with microchannel-plate PMTs

2020

Abstract Microchannel-plate (MCP) PMTs were identified as the only suitable photon sensors for the two DIRC detectors of the PANDA experiment at FAIR. As the long-standing aging problem of MCP-PMTs was recently overcome by coating the MCP pores with an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, further improved 2 ″ MCP-PMTs were investigated. The best PHOTONIS device has reached a lifetime of > 20 C/cm2 integrated anode charge without any sign of aging. Also the newly developed 2 ″ MCP-PMTs of Hamamatsu are maturing and are usable in high rate environments. The status of our long-term lifetime measurements and the performance parameters of the currently most advanced ALD-coated MCP-PMTs from …

Lateral diffusion estimation in fully depleted thick CCD using flat field image analysis

2011

Abstract In thick fully depleted CCDs charge carrier transport from the back window to the gates is accompanied by charge diffusion. Lateral diffusion smooths out density variations of the incoming photon flux by redistributing charges spatially. This creates short range positive correlations in recorded amplitudes. Pixel-to-pixel amplitude variations can also be caused by pixel size and quantum efficiency variations. Pixel size variations result in short range negative correlations. Our study shows that the characteristic diffusion width can be extracted from flat field data. The study was performed on fully depleted, thick CCDs produced in a technology study for the Large Synoptic Survey …

Irradiation study of a fully monolithic HV-CMOS pixel sensor design in AMS 180 nm

2018

Abstract High-Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS) based on a 180 nm HV-CMOS process have been proposed to realize thin, fast and highly integrated pixel sensors. The MuPix7 prototype, fabricated in the commercial AMS H18 process, features a fully integrated on-chip readout, i.e. hit-digitization, zero suppression and data serialization. MuPix7 is the first fully monolithic HV-CMOS pixel sensor that has been tested for the use in high irradiation environments like HL-LHC. We present results from laboratory and test beam measurements of MuPix7 prototypes irradiated with neutrons (up to 5.0 × 1015 neq/cm2) and 24 GeV protons (up to 7.8 × 1015 protons/cm2) and compare the performa…

MuPix8 — Large area monolithic HVCMOS pixel detector for the Mu3e experiment

2019

Abstract The requirements of the ultra thin pixel detectors for the Mu3e experiment at PSI can be achieved by the HVCMOS technology, which allows the design of fast monolithic detectors. The latest nearly full size prototype, MuPix8, has a size of about 1 × 2 cm 2 . The pixel readout circuitry was fully redesigned in comparison to the previous MuPix versions. MuPix8’s readout electronics implement a new concept with two comparators and two different operation modes. One mode uses two threshold voltages for time walk correction, the other is a ramp-ADC. First tests show a detection efficiency of 99.6% for 4 GeV electrons.
