Accuracy assessment of cone beam computed tomography-derived laboratory-based surgical templates on partially edentulous patients
2011
Objectives: The aim of the present prospective clinical study was to evaluate the match between the positions and axes of the virtually planned and the placed implants using laboratory-based surgical guides generated from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: A total of 132 implants were placed with the aid of 3D-based transfer templates in 52 consecutive partially edentulous patients between April 2008 and March 2010. After individual adaptation of the scan templates and CBCT scanning, the acquired data for virtual implant planning and simulation were processed using the med3D software program. After finalizing the virtual placement of the implants the radiographic t…
Analysis of different geometrical features to achieve close-to-bone stiffness material properties in medical device: A feasibility numerical study
2021
Background and objective: In orthopedic medical devices, elasto-plastic behavior differences between bone and metallic materials could lead to mechanical issues at the bone-implant interface, as stress shielding. Those issue are mainly related to knee and hip arthroplasty, and they could be responsible for implant failure. To reduce mismatching-related adverse events between bone and prosthesis mechanical properties, modifying the implant's internal geometry varying the bulk stiffness and density could be the right approach. Therefore, this feasibility study aims to assess which in-body gap geometry improves, by reducing, the bulk stiffness. Methods: Using five finite element models, a unia…
Molecular origin and hydration dependence of protein anharmonicity: an elastic neutron scattering study.
2010
Two main onsets of anharmonicity are present in protein dynamics. Neutron scattering on protein hydrated powders revealed a first onset at about 150 K and a second one at about 230 K (the so called dynamical transition). In order to assess the molecular origin of protein anharmonicity, we study different homomeric polypeptides by incoherent elastic neutron scattering, thus disentangling the contribution of different molecular groups in proteins. We show that methyl group rotations are the main contributors to the low temperature onset. Concerning the dynamical transition, we show that it also occurs in absence of side chains; however, the presence and mobility of side chains substantially i…
Downsizing the Electric Motors of Energy-Efficient Self-Contained Electro-Hydraulic Systems by Using Hybrid Technologies
2020
Abstract The ongoing tendency toward the electrification of hydraulic systems, mainly in the form of self-contained solutions, poses design challenges in high-power applications. An electric motor drives positive-displacement machines used to control the motion of the hydraulic actuator (nonhybrid systems encompassing one or two pumps exist in the technical literature). All the power managed by the actuator passes through the electric motor, which leads to often oversized arrangements. These detrimental characteristics are especially pronounced when the power level increases approximately above 35–40 kW. Therefore, this research paper presents and studies a self-contained, electro-hydraulic…
EFECTOS DE LOS VIDEOJUEGOS EN LAS MARCAS EMPLAZADAS: LA TRANSMISIÓN DE EMOCIONES
2012
High-Definition Imaging in Spinal Neuroendoscopy
2010
BACKGROUND Spinal endoscopy is still under controversial discussion. An often acclaimed critic is the poor endoscopic image quality in comparison with the microscope. Since high-definition digital cameras have recently been introduced into spinal neuroendoscopy, the aim of the current study is to examine whether superior image quality has a relevant impact on intraoperativen orientation. MATERIAL AND METHODS A lumbar endoscopic discectomy was recorded simultaneously in High-Definition resolution (HD) and Standard-Definition resolution (SD). 10 experienced spinal surgeons were asked to identify predefined as well as not predefined anatomic structures in HD and SD resolution. Additionally, th…
Conservative swept volume boundary approximation
2010
We present a novel technique for approximating the boundary of a swept volume. The generator given by an input triangle mesh is rendered under all rigid transformations of a discrete trajectory. We use a special shader program that creates offset geometry of each triangle on the fly, thus guaranteeing a conservative rasterization and correct depth values. Utilizing rasterization mechanisms and the depth buffer we then get a conservative voxelization of the swept volume (SV) and can extract a triangle mesh from its surface. This mesh is simplified maintaining conservativeness as well as an error bound measured in terms of the one-sided Hausdorff distance. For this we introduce a new techniqu…
VALIDITY, RELIABILITY AND FEASIBILITY OF MEASURING MUSCLE ACTIVITY WITH TEXTILE ELECTRODES EMBEDDED INTO CLOTHING
2007
INTRODUCTION In out-of-laboratory settings the surface EMG measurements are complicated by the requirement of careful electrode placement and skin preparation. The development of washable textile electrodes that can be sowed into sportswear enable muscle activity recordings during normal locomotion without skin preparation and the problem of wires hanging around the body [1]. In this study we performed validity, reliability and feasibility tests of the textile electrodes embedded into shorts against the traditional bipolar surface electrodes.
Hydraulic Models and Finite Elements for Monitoring of an Earth Dam, by Using GNSS Techniques
2016
This work gives a comparison between different mathematicalmodels for the evaluation of the movements of an earthendam situated between Bivona and Alessandria della Rocca, inthe province of Agrigento (AG), Italy. The models selected areof a hydraulic nature, already tested on concrete dams, andfinite elements models which, on the contrary, exploit geotechnicalparameters. The results obtained from the comparisonof the displacement planimetric components and the relativetime series of data over a period of two years appear to befully satisfactory, in fact using both models of a hydraulic andgeotechnical nature, we reach residues of just mm. To supportthis work, a monitoring procedure using GN…
LV Measurement Device Placement for Load Flow Analysis in MV Smart Grids
2016
This paper deals with the issue of measurement device placement for load flow analysis in medium-voltage (MV) distribution networks. The study is carried out using an innovative measurement algorithm for load flow analysis developed by the authors. It is based on low-voltage (LV) load power measurements applied on a backward/forward algorithm for the load flow resolution. The final aim is to identify the most suitable number and placement of the LV measurement points in order to limit the uncertainty on the power flow estimation to a target value. The proposed approach is based on the uncertainty evaluation of the estimated power flows; a sensitivity analysis is performed in order to assess…
