Postoperative Patient Education in Physiotherapy after Hip Arthroplasty : Patients' Perspective

2016

The objective of the present study was to explore postoperative patient education in physiotherapy from total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients' perspectives, which has been a little-studied area of research. The usefulness of rehabilitation protocols after THA has been debated over the years, and there are no clear guidelines for physiotherapy after THA METHODS: The data for the present qualitative study were collected from nine patients with THA by using individual interviews at the hospital after surgery. The interviews were audio-recorded and analysed by using a phenomenographic method RESULTS: Four different categories of postoperative patient education in physiotherapy after hip arthrop…

Bone mineral density in relation to anthropometric properties, physical activity and smoking in 75-year-old men and women

1993

Bone mineral content (BMC, gem−2) and density (BMD, gem−3) were studied in 75-year-old men and women in relation to anthropometric and certain life-style factors. This study covered all the men and women born in 1914 who were residents in the city of Jyvaskyla in 1989 (N=388). A hundred and three men and 188 women participated in bone measurements performed at the calcaneus using a 125I-photon absorption method. BMC was on average 36% and BMD 17% higher in the men than in the women. BMC and BMD associated with body mass in both sexes, and with body fat and use of estrogen in the women. There was a negative correlation between the BMD values and the number of cigarettes smoked over the entir…

Continuous Femoral Catheter for Postoperative Analgesia After Total Knee Arthroplasty

2020

Introduction Postoperative pain management in the total knee replacement (TKR) represent a fundamental step for a positive outcome, allowing rapid mobilization, already on the first day. Further, continuous peripheral nerve block techniques have been reported to allow effective and safe control of acute postoperative pain, ensuring the implementation and completion of an accurate and intensive joint rehabilitation program. Aim The aim of this study was to assess early mobility and compliance of patients that underwent TKR surgery using the femoral block. Methods For the study, all patients that underwent TKR from 2015 to 2018 with ASA score between II-III was evaluated. Patients underwent v…

Quantification of Bone Density of the Proximal Femur After Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty—Comparison of Different DXA Acquisition Modes

2010

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a traditional operative procedure in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) provides an alternative to the THA for young active patients. HRA is a bone-preserving procedure eliminating the problem of proximal femoral stress shielding and osteolysis associated to THA. Unfortunately, there is no standardized methodology to monitor the quality of bone after HRA. In this study, areal bone mineral density (BMD) in the operated hip (10 regions of interests [ROIs] of 34 volunteered HRA patients) was measured using Lunar Prodigy dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the agreement of a standard (dual femur) and an orthopedic (orthopedi…

Influence of Different DXA Acquisition Modes on Monitoring the Changes in Bone Mineral Density After Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty

2011

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a technique enabling the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) around prostheses after hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). In this study, we evaluated the consistency of different DXA acquisition modes with 33 patients who had undergone HRA. Patients were scanned with DXA immediately after surgery and at 3-, 6-, and 12-mo time points. All the patients were scanned with dual femur and orthopedic hip acquisition modes and analyzed using 10-region ROI model. With both acquisition modes, a statistically significant decrease (p0.05, Wilcoxon's test) in BMD at 3mo was revealed in 3 ROIs, located to upper and lateral upper femur. Both acquisition modes…

Differences in gait characteristics between total hip, knee, and ankle arthroplasty patients: a six-month postoperative comparison.

2013

International audience; BACKGROUND: The recovery of gait ability is one of the primary goals for patients following total arthroplasty of lower-limb joints. The aim of this study was to objectively compare gait differences of patients after unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA), total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) with a group of healthy controls. METHODS: A total of 26 TAA, 26 TKA and 26 THA patients with a mean (+/- SD) age of 64 (+/- 9) years were evaluated six months after surgery and compared with 26 matched healthy controls. Subjects were asked to walk at self-selected normal and fast speeds on a validated pressure mat. The following spatiotemporal gait …

Secondary Osseous Integration of Cementless Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty After Internal Fixation of a Felix Type IIIB Fracture

2021

Case A 76-year-old man presented with periprosthetic tibial plateau fracture (TPF), with a completely loosened tibial component 3 weeks after cementless unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Internal fixation by buttress plating was performed, and the tibial component was retained and left in situ primarily as a spacer. Revision was planned after fracture consolidation, but at 3 months, the patient was able to walk without support, without pain, and with full range of motion. At 1 year, he is free of complaints. The initial loosened tibial component reintegrated. Conclusion Internal fixation combined with preserving the loosened tibial component may be a treatment option for TPF involvi…

Do sex and pain characteristics influence the effectiveness of pain neuroscience education in people scheduled for total knee arthroplasty? Secondary…

2021

Abstract Objective This explorative study investigates the moderating effect of sex and baseline pain characteristics on the effectiveness of preoperative pain neuroscience education (PNE) plus knee joint mobilization versus biomedical education plus knee joint mobilization in patients who have knee osteoarthritis and are scheduled to undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods After baseline assessment of self-reported questionnaires (pain intensity, disability, symptoms of central sensitization and pain cognitions) and quantitative sensory testing, 44 participants with knee osteoarthritis were randomized into the PNE plus knee joint mobilization or biomedical education plus knee joint …

Employment Status and Personal Income Before and After Onset of a Severe Mental Disorder: A Case-Control Study.

2020

Objective: Individuals with severe mental disorders have an impaired ability to work and are likely to receive income transfer payments as their main source of income. However, the magnitude of this phenomenon remains unclear. Using longitudinal population cohort register data, the authors conducted a case-control study to examine the levels of employment and personal income before and after a first hospitalization for a serious mental disorder. Methods: All individuals (N=50,551) who had been hospitalized for schizophrenia, other nonaffective psychosis, or bipolar disorder in Finland between 1988 and 2015 were identified and matched with five randomly selected participants who were the sam…

Product Placement in the Pharmaceutical Industry: The Case of Sinemet in ER

2015

While physician-oriented marketing remains the largest factor in drug advertising and direct-to-consumer advertising has increased its budget during the last few years (IMS Health, 2001), pharmaceutical brands are exploring new ways to target consumers in a softer way. Product placement in entertainment media allows the promotion of brand drugs in a natural and entertaining context. Using a case study methodology, this chapter analyses the use of product placement of a brand drug (Sinemet) in the television series ER (NBC). To do so, first of all product placement definition and main marketing goals are provided. Then the authors address the legal framework of product placement for brand dr…
