Mechanisms of Disease: molecular insights into aseptic loosening of orthopedic implants
2007
Despite the success of treating rheumatic disorders with biologic therapies, joint replacement surgery still remains the final treatment option in many cases. Approximately 1.5 million joint arthroplastic operations are performed annually worldwide. Implant failure due to massive bone loss and aseptic loosening of prostheses, however, is a major complication of joint replacement, which can lead to high socioeconomic burdens both for the individual patient and for health-care systems. To date, there is no approved drug therapy to prevent or inhibit periprosthetic osteolysis, and aseptic loosening of prostheses can only be overcome by surgical revision. Research during the past decade, howeve…
Comparison of soft tissue body composition in postmenopausal women with or without hormone replacement therapy considering the influence of reproduct…
2001
To examine long-term effects of at least 5 years' conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), reproductive history and lifestyle on fat mass and muscle mass in postmenopausal women.A cross-sectional retrospective approach was used, including 64 healthy women (56-69 years, mean age 63.4 years). Hormone users were compared with age-matched non-users with respect to (a) type of HRT used (oestrogen vs oestrogen plus gestagen vs no hormones), (b) categories of oestrogens used (oestradiol-based oestrogens vs conjugated equine oestrogens vs no oestrogens) and (c) categories of gestagens used (testosterone derivatives vs progesterone derivatives vs no gestagens). Data on hormone use, reproducti…
Reservoir monitoring using satellite SAR and GNSS: a case study in southern Italy
2018
Recently, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to relate water levels of a reservoir with its dam displacements. Water levels were determined via remote sensing, while dam displacements were measured via Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Results have shown that displacements and water levels are correlated.Water levels at the Magazzolo reservoir in southern Italy were firstly retrieved using two remote sensing approaches: by visual matching between the reservoir shoreline and contour lines, and by evaluating the surface extent via unsupervised classification to estimate the water levels with an area/depth relation. Dam displacements were measured using GPS receivers on the …
Secondary implant stability outcome of immediate versus late placed variable-thread implants in the maxilla. A retrospective cohort study
2017
BACKGROUND The healing of xenograft augmentated intra-alveolar gaps following immediate implant placement (IMIP) after tooth extraction is likely to differ in time and density compared to the native bone part that directly contacts the implant. MATERIAL AND METHODS Secondary implant stability (SIS) data recorded 2-3 months following a late implant placement protocol (LIP) (n= 43) and 6-8 months following an immediate implant placement protocol (IMIP) (n=33) of variable-thread implants (Nobel Active™) in the maxilla were retrospectively collected from files of 63 patients (42 females, 21 males). Statistical analysis was performed using a generalized estimating equation model (GEE). Data spli…
Pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms of anderson–fabry disease and possible new molecular addressed therapeutic strategies
2021
Anderson–Fabry disease (AFD) is a rare disease with an incidenceof approximately 1:117,000 male births. Lysosomal accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) is the element characterizing Fabry disease due to a hereditary deficiency α-galactosidase A (GLA) enzyme. The accumulation of Gb3 causes lysosomal dysfunction that compromises cell signaling pathways. Deposition of sphingolipids occurs in the autonomic nervous system, dorsal root ganglia, kidney epithelial cells, vascular system cells, and myocardial cells, resulting in organ failure. This manuscript will review the molecular pathogenetic pathways involved in Anderson–Fabry disease and in its organ damage. Some studies reported that i…
On the Measurement and Prediction of the Out-of-Plane Displacement Surrounding Cold-Expanded Holes
2010
Experimental measurements of the out-of-plane displacement surrounding cold-expanded holes in a 6082-T6 aluminum alloy were made with a 3D optical scanner using the technique of the encoded light-pattern projection in white light. The measured surface profiles have shown the thickness discontinuity along the hole edge due to the effect of the split in the sleeve. An analytical–numerical solution of the out-of-plane displacement is presented based on existing analytical models. Thus, the results given by the analytical model were then compared with the experimental data and with a finite element (FE) model that simulates the cold-expansion process. The location of the elastic–plastic boundar…
Reoperations After First Lumbar Disk Herniation Surgery with or without Implantation of Mechanical Annular Closure Device
2019
Lumbar diskectomy is a widely performed surgical procedure in patients affected by lumbar disk herniation (LDH). Such a surgical procedure is considered to be safe and able to provide a consistent symptomatic relief in most patients. However, perioperative complications have been reported, ranging from 13% to 15%, and pose a considerable financial burden among patients, hospitals, and national health care agencies. The most common perioperative complication following lumbar diskectomy for disk herniation is the recurrence. Although the recurrence rate of LDH has been reported to be 5%−15%, its exact incidence may be underestimated. Recurrent lumbar disk herniation (rLDH) is defined as disk …

Markers of the last interglacial sea level high stand along the coast of Italy: Tectonic implications.
2006
A compilation of the Marine Isotope Substage (MIS) 5.5 high stand (similar to 125Ka) sites spanning the coastline of Italy allows a picture of the vertical displacement pattern affecting the Central Mediterranean coasts since the Late Pleistocene to be drawn. For each of the 246 listed sites, the accurate elevation of the high stand is defined through well-known markers. Coupled with a refilled age assessment locally Supported by new radiometric dating, these markers provide robust constraints oil deformation. Significant alongshore differences in site elevation between + 175 and - 125 m a.s.l. resulted from the interplay of regional and local tectonic processes, including faulting and volc…
Explicit form of the time operator of a gaussian stationary process
2004
We present the time operator theory in the framework of stationary stochastic processes. The main results of the paper is the derivation of the time operator acting on the Fock space associated with a discrete time gaussian stationary process.
