Quantifying an Upper Extremity Everyday Task With 3D Kinematic Analysis in People With Spinal Cord Injury and Non-disabled Controls

2021

Objectives: Upper extremity function after spinal cord injury (SCI) is an important factor for performance of activities of daily living. An objective assessment of upper extremity function preferably in purposeful daily tasks is essential in understanding its impact on real-life activities. This study aimed to identify which movement parameters of upper extremity, measured by kinematic analysis during a purposeful daily task, are impaired in people with cervical or thoracic SCI.Materials and Methods: The study included 29 adults (mean 59.5 years, 9 women and 20 men) with cervical (n = 19) or thoracic (n = 10) established complete (n = 15) or incomplete (n = 14) SCI, and 54 non-disabled con…

Parathyroid hormone serum concentration kinetic profile in critically ill patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapies: a prospective o…

2021

Introduction: Elevated serum parathormone (PTH) levels have been observed in acute kidney injury and are related to calcium-phosphate metabolism disturbance, decreased renal production of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3, impaired renal PTH excretion, and other renal-independent factors. There are no data regarding PTH concentration kinetics in critically ill patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT) in an intensive care setting. The primary objective of this study was to investigate trends in PTH serum levels in critically ill patients with multiorgan failure undergoing CRRT, by performing periodic PTH measurements in the acute phase of critical illness. Material and method…

OGT and OGA expression in postmenopausal skeletal muscle associates with hormone replacement therapy and muscle cross-sectional area

2013

Protein glycosylation via O-linked N-acetylglucosaminylation (O-GlcNAcylation) is an important post-translational regulatory mechanism mediated by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and responsive to nutrients and stress. OGT attaches an O-GlcNAc moiety to proteins, while O-GlcNAcase (OGA) catalyzes O-GlcNAc removal. In skeletal muscle of experimental animals, prolonged increase in O-GlcNAcylation associates with age and muscle atrophy. Here we examined the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and power training (PT) on muscle OGT and OGA gene expression in postmenopausal women generally prone to age-related muscle weakness. In addition, the associations of OGT and OGA gene expressions with…

The Mainz Severity Score Index: a new instrument for quantifying the Anderson-Fabry disease phenotype, and the response of patients to enzyme replace…

2004

Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD) is an X-linked disorder caused by deficient activity of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A. The availability of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for this debilitating condition has led to the need for a convenient and sensitive instrument to monitor clinical effects in an individual patient. This study aimed to develop a scoring system--the Mainz Severity Score Index (MSSI)--to measure the severity of AFD and to monitor the clinical course of the disease in response to ERT. Thirty-nine patients (24 males and 15 females) with AFD were assessed using the MSSI immediately before and 1 year after commencing agalsidase alfa ERT. Control data were obtained fro…

Forderungen und Erwartungen an einen optimalen Volumenersatz

2005

A volume replacement should compensate a reduction in the intravascular volume and counteract a hypovolemia so that hemodynamics and vital functions can be maintained. For this therapy, a physiologically-based solution comprising both osmotically and colloid osmotically active components should be administered. A consensus is proposed for this purpose which takes into consideration the following aspects: The optimum colloid, the questionable use of albumin, the physiological electrolyte pattern encompassing sodium, potassium, chloride and phosphate and their contributions to osmolality, an eventual addition of glucose, the physiological acid-base status with bicarbonate or alternately with …

Endometrial response to concurrent treatment with vaginal progesterone and transdermal estradiol.

2012

ABSTRACT Objective To describe the effect of the intermittent administration of vaginal progesterone and a low-dose estradiol patch on endometrial stability, as assessed by the rate of amenorrhea and endometrial stimulation. Methods This was an open study in which 64 moderately symptomatic, postmenopausal women were treated in the outpatient clinic of our University Hospital for different intervals up to 1 year. The treatment consisted of a combination of patches delivering 25 µg/day estradiol and intravaginal pills containing 100 mg of micronized progesterone. Patches and pills were administered concomitantly in a twice-a-week protocol. The endometrial response was assessed by endovaginal …

<p>Preoperative Anemia Screening and Treatment Practices in Patients Having Total Joint Replacement Surgery: A Retrospective, Observational Aud…

2020

Background: Surgical patients with preoperative anemia are more likely to experience adverse outcomes. Patient blood management (PBM) guidelines recommend screening and treating patients for anemia preoperatively to enable optimisation before surgery. This study investigates compliance with PBM guidelines and reports the association between length of stay and transfusion risk in patients with preoperative anemia. Study Design and Methods: A retrospective, observational, chart audit that included all patients having primary, total hip and knee replacement surgery between July–December 2018 at a tertiary, metropolitan healthcare facility. Results: Six hundred and seven patients patients were …

Characteristics of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type II who have received a bone marrow transplant: Data from the Hunter Outcome Survey

2019

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II Hunter syndrome) is a rare, life-limiting, X-linked lysosomal storage disease. The Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS) is a Shire-sponsored, global, observational registry initiated in 2005 that collects real-world data on the natural history of MPS II and long-term treatment with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with idursulfase. Patients receiving other forms of pharmacological ERT are excluded from HOS but individuals who have received a bone marrow transplant (BMT) may be enrolled. This analysis examined the characteristics of 36 male patients in HOS from Europe and North America who had received a BMT (March 2018 data). In total, 22 patients (61.1%) were E…

Simulation of left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction in transcatheter mitral valve-in-ring replacement.

2020

Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction is a feared complication of transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). This procedure leads to an elongation of LVOT in the left ventricle (namely, the neoLVOT), ultimately portending hemodynamic impairment and death. This study sought to understand the biomechanical implications of LVOT obstruction in two patients who underwent TMVR as an "off-label" application of the Edwards SAPIEN 3 (S3) Ultra transcatheter heart valve (THV). A computational framework of TMVR was developed to assess the neoLVOT area and quantify the sub-aortic flow structure. We observed that the annuloplasty ring serves as the key anchor zone of S3 Ultra THV. A good…
