<title>Clinical potential of the side-glowing optical fibers</title>
1997
Unconventional designs of silica-core optical fibers providing efficient lateral emission through the cylindrical side surface have been developed and manufactured. A physical model of the side-glowing fibers, available experimental data and potential clinical applications of this type of lightguides are discussed. Promising, clinical applications can be expected in the following areas: (1) Phototherapy, including photo-dynamic therapy, soft-laser therapy and visible/UV broadband irradiation therapy. (2) Single-fiber laser Doppler flowmetry. (3) Laser-tissue dosimetry. (4) Linear and planar 'cold light' illumination. (5) Optical sensing of mechanical pressure.
Guideline for Optical Optimization of Planar Perovskite Solar Cells
2019
Organometallic halide perovskite solar cells have emerged as a versatile photovoltaic technology with soaring efficiencies. Planar configuration in particular, has been a structure of choice thanks to its lower temperature processing, compatibility with tandem solar cells and potential in commercialization. Despite all the breakthroughs in the field, the optical mechanisms leading to highly efficient perovskite solar cells lack profound insight. In this paper, a comprehensive guideline is introduced involving semi-analytical equations for thickness optimization of the front and rear transport layers, perovskite, and transparent conductive oxides to improve the antireflection and light trapp…
Planar metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency for plasmonic sensing.
2009
We experimentally demonstrate a planar metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency at optical frequencies. The structure consists of an optically bright dipole antenna and an optically dark quadrupole antenna, which are cut-out structures in a thin gold film. A pronounced coupling-induced reflectance peak is observed within a broad resonance spectrum. A metamaterial sensor based on these coupling effects is experimentally demonstrated and yields a sensitivity of 588 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 3.8.
Focusing in Depth: Post-Task Accommodation Shifts After Sustained Near Work with Volumetric Multi-Planar Display
2018
Post-task refraction shifts were evaluated with eccentric photorefraction technique to better understand response of visual system and eye accommodation to sustained near work with 3D image formed by volumetric display.
Tuning the electronic properties and the planarity degree in the π-extended TTF series: the prominent role of heteroatoms
2018
The main asset of small molecules for application in organic electronics lies in the tunability of their electronic properties owing to the precise control of their molecular design. Semiconducting properties in organic compounds are for instance closely linked to the molecular planarity degree, including when considering various redox states. Among those species, the π-extended TTF (exTTF: 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene) presents fascinating redox and structural properties, which have been extensively studied in various fields of organic electronics. Here we show that S-exTTF, a sulfur enriched π-isoelectronic dithieno analogue of pristine exTTF, synthesized through…
Abatement of 3-methylbutanal and trimethylamine with combined plasma and photocatalysis in a continuous planar reactor
2014
International audience; This paper deals with the 3-methylbutanal ((CH3)2CHCH2COH) removal with the help of a nonthermal surface plasma discharge coupled with photocatalysis. The capability of this process for gas treatment was studied. A planar reactor system was developed in order to perform the effect of adding photocatalytic material in plasma surface discharge barrier dielectric (SDBD) zone on (i) 3-methylbutanal removal, (ii) selectivity of CO2 and CO, (iii) byproducts formation such ozone formation. It was found that the influence of the UV light generated by SDBD reactor was very low. The activation of the photocatalyst media could be negligible. Whereas, the introduction of externa…
Hygro-elasto-plastic model for planar orthotropic material
2015
An in-plane elasto-plastic material model and a hygroexpansivity-shrinkage model for paper and board are introduced in this paper. The input parameters for both models are fiber orientation anisotropy and dry solids content. These two models, based on experimental results, could be used in an analytical approach to estimate, for example, plastic strain and shrinkage in simple one-dimensional cases, but for studies of the combined and more complicated effects of hygro-elasto-plastic behavior, a numerical finite element model was constructed. The finite element approach also offered possibilities for studying different structural variations of an orthotropic sheet as well as buckling behavior…
Parametric Solitons in Two-Dimensional Lattices of Purely Nonlinear Origin
2008
We demonstrate spatial solitons via twin-beam second-harmonic generation in hexagonal lattices realized by poling lithium niobate planar waveguides. These simultons can be steered by acting on power, direction, and wavelength of the fundamental frequency input.
The role of combined techniques of scintigraphy and SPECT/CT in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism
2019
RATIONALE Primary hyperparathyroidism, usually as a result of a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland, represents more than 90% cases of patients evaluated for hypercalcemia. Combined techniques of preoperative scintigraphy and SPECT/CT serve as a successful minimally-invasive parathyroidectomy. This recent imaging method provides four-dimensional functional images with advanced contrast resolution which greatly facilitates preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas. PATIENT CONCERNS We presented the case of a male Caucasian patient, aged 67 years, who was investigated for hypercalcemia. Increased levels of parathormone, cervical ultrasonography without pathological changes, and negativ…
The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano
2019
International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.
