Identification of sub- μs isomeric states in the odd-odd nucleus Au178

2021

The neutron-deficient gold (Z=79) isotopes in the vicinity of the neutron midshell N=104 provide prolific examples of shape coexistence and isomerism at low excitation energy. They can be probed via a number of different experimental techniques. In this study, two new isomeric states with half-lives of 294(7) and 373(9) ns have been observed in the neutron-deficient odd-odd nuclide Au178 (N=99) in an experiment at the RITU gas-filled separator at JYFL, Jyvaskyla. This result was achieved due to the use of a segmented planar germanium detector with a high efficiency at low energies. By applying the recoil-decay tagging technique, they were assigned to decay to two different long-lived α-deca…

Density-functional based tight-binding study of small gold clusters

2006

In this paper, we report the ability of self-consistent-charge density-functional based tight-binding method to describe small gold clusters. We concentrate our investigations mainly on anions, and find that the method describes their geometric and electronic structures fairly well, in comparison with density-functional calculations. In particular, the method correctly reproduces the planarity of ground-state structures up to cluster sizes in agreement with experiment and density-functional theory.

Stability of Relativistic Hydrodynamical Planar Jets: Linear and Nonlinear Evolution of Kelvin-Helmholtz Modes

2004

Some aspects about the stability of relativistic flows against Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) perturbations are studied by means of relativistic, hydrodynamical simulations. In particular, we analyze the transition to the fully nonlinear regime and the long-term evolution of two jet models with different specific internal energies.

A low-level spectrometer with a planar low-energy HPGe: shielding arrangement tests and system performance for 210Pb determination in air filter samp…

2001

A system for low-energy photon spectrometry using a planar germanium detector with appropriate specifications is presented. A spectrometric background investigation has been carried out with various detector shielding arrangements. The characteristics of the system for measurements of 210Pb in air-particulate matter on filters have been determined.

On the hardness of evaluating criticality of activities in a planar network with duration intervals

2003

Complexity results for problems of evaluating the criticality of activities in planar networks with duration time intervals are presented. We show that the problems of asserting whether an activity is possibly critical, and of computing bounds on the float of an activity in these networks are NP-complete and NP-hard, respectively.

Plane foliations with a saddle singularity

2012

Abstract We study the set of planar vector fields with a unique singularity of hyperbolic saddle type. We found conditions to assure that a such vector field is topologically equivalent to a linear saddle. Furthermore, we describe the plane foliations associated to these vector fields. Such a foliation can be split in two subfoliations. One without restriction and another one that is topologically characterized by means of trees.

Efficient and Accurate Consideration of Ohmic Losses in Waveguide Diplexers and Multiplexers

2006

The accurate consideration of all ohmic losses effects in waveguide manifold diplexers and multiplexers is rigorously studied in this paper. For such purposes, a full-wave CAD tool based exclusively on modal methods is originally proposed. Proceeding in this very efficient way, losses are precisely considered in all common components of such complex devices, i.e. planar junctions, uniform lines and multi-port circuits implemented in waveguide technology. For verification purposes, we have successfully compared our results for a magic-T junction and a manifold diplexer with experimental and numerical results.

Conductivity imaging with interior potential measurements

2011

In this article, we present two reconstruction methods intended to be used for conductivity imaging with data obtained from a planar electrical impedance tomography device for breast cancer detection. The inverse problem to solve is different from the classical inverse conductivity problem. We reconstruct the electrical conductivity of a two-dimensional domain from boundary measurements of currents and interior measurements of the potential. One reconstruction algorithm is based on a discrete resistor model; the other one is an integral equation approach for smooth conductivity distributions.

Tunable defects in colloidal photonic crystals

2006

We present a bottom-up approach for the construction of tunable functional defects in colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs). These structures incorporate polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) planar defects embedded in silica CPCs through a combination of evaporation induced self-assembly and microcontact transfer printing. We show how the enormous chemical diversity inherent to PEMs can be harnessed to create chemically active defect structures responsive to solvent vapor pressures, light, temperature as well as redox cycling. A sharp transmission state within the photonic stopband, induced by the PEM defect, can be precisely, reproducibly and in some cases reversibly tuned by these external stimu…
