Potential therapeutic effects of natural heme oxygenase-1 inducers in cardiovascular diseases.

2013

Significance: Many physiological effects of natural antioxidants, their extracts or their major active components, have been reported in recent decades. Most of these compounds are characterized by a phenolic structure, similar to that of α-tocopherol, and present antioxidant properties that have been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Polyphenols may increase the capacity of endogenous antioxidant defenses and modulate the cellular redox state. Such effects may have wide-ranging consequences for cellular growth and differentiation. Critical Issues: The majority of in vitro and in vivo studies conducted so far have attributed the protective effect of bioactive polyphenols to their chem…

Exceptionally preserved soft parts in fossils from the Lower Ordovician of Morocco clarify stylophoran affinities within basal deuterostomes.

2019

10 pages; International audience; The extinct echinoderm clade Stylophora consists of some of the strangest known deuterostomes. Stylophorans are known from complete, fully articulated skeletal remains from the middle Cambrian to the Pennsylvanian, but remain difficult to interpret. Their bizarre morphology, with a single appendage extending from a main body, has spawned vigorous debate over the phylogenetic significance of stylophorans, which were long considered modified but bona fide echinoderms with a feeding appendage. More recent interpretation of this appendage as a posterior “tail-like” structure has literally turned the animal back to front, leading to consideration of stylophorans…

Hölder stability for Serrin’s overdetermined problem

2015

In a bounded domain \(\varOmega \), we consider a positive solution of the problem \(\Delta u+f(u)=0\) in \(\varOmega \), \(u=0\) on \(\partial \varOmega \), where \(f:\mathbb {R}\rightarrow \mathbb {R}\) is a locally Lipschitz continuous function. Under sufficient conditions on \(\varOmega \) (for instance, if \(\varOmega \) is convex), we show that \(\partial \varOmega \) is contained in a spherical annulus of radii \(r_i 0\) and \(\tau \in (0,1]\). Here, \([u_\nu ]_{\partial \varOmega }\) is the Lipschitz seminorm on \(\partial \varOmega \) of the normal derivative of u. This result improves to Holder stability the logarithmic estimate obtained in Aftalion et al. (Adv Differ Equ 4:907–93…

Ejection and collision orbits of the spatial restricted three-body problem

1985

We begin by describing the global flow of the spatial two body rotating problem, μ=0. The remainder of the work is devoted to study the ejection and collision orbits when μ>-0. We make use of the ‘blow up’ techniques to show that for any fixed value of the Jacobian constant the set of these orbits is diffeomorphic to S2×R. Also we find some particular collision-ejection orbits.

Figures of equilibrium in close binary systems

1992

The equilibrium configurations of close binary systems are analyzed. The autogravitational, centrifugal and tidal potentials are expanded in Clairaut's coordinates. From the set of the total potential angular terms an integral equations system is derived. The reduction of them to ordinary differential equations and the determination of the boundary conditions allow a formulation of the problem in terms of a single variable.

Combined effects of heatwaves and micropollutants on freshwater ecosystems: Towards an integrated assessment of extreme events in multiple stressors …

2022

Freshwater ecosystems are strongly influenced by weather extremes such as heatwaves, which are predicted to increase in frequency and magnitude in the future. In addition to these climate extremes, the freshwater realm is impacted by the exposure to various classes of chemicals emitted by anthropogenic activities. Currently, there is limited knowledge on how the combined exposure to heatwaves and chemicals affects the structure and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Here, we review the available literature describing the single and combined effects of heatwaves and chemicals on different levels of biological organization, to obtain a holistic view of their potential interactive effects. …

Simplification, not “tropicalization”, of temperate marine ecosystems under ocean warming and acidification

2021

Ocean warming is altering the biogeographical distribution of marine organisms. In the tropics, rising sea surface temperatures are restructuring coral reef communities with sensitive species being lost. At the biogeographical divide between temperate and tropical communities, warming is causing macroalgal forest loss and the spread of tropical corals, fishes and other species, termed “tropicalization”. A lack of field research into the combined effects of warming and ocean acidification means there is a gap in our ability to understand and plan for changes in coastal ecosystems. Here, we focus on the tropicalization trajectory of temperate marine ecosystems becoming coral-dominated systems…

Shell matrices of recent rhynchonelliform brachiopods: microstructures and glycosylation studies.

2007

ABSTRACTLike most metazoan biomineralisations, the brachiopod shell is the end product of a biologically controlled calcification process. The main agent of the control is the extracellular matrix, which is secreted by the outer mantle epithelium. This matrix mediates the calcification process by allowing crystal nucleation and elongation in specific orientations and finally, by stopping crystal growth. The proteinaceous moiety of brachiopod shell matrices has been extensively studied. Less known are the post-translational modifications that occur in these matrices, in particular glycosylations. In this comparison of five species of Recent articulated brachiopods, the ratio of soluble to in…
