HAQ survey: red QSO candidates follow-up

2015

Quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are reddened by dust either in their host galaxies or in intervening absorber galaxies are to a large degree missed by optical color selection criteria like the ones used by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). To overcome this bias against red QSOs, we employ a combined optical and near-infrared (near-IR) color selection. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic follow-up campaign of a sample of red candidate QSOs which were selected from the SDSS and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The spectroscopic data and SDSS/UKIDSS photometry are supplemented by mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared S…

ESPRESSO radial velocities of HE0107-5240

2020

The vast majority of the known stars of ultra low metallicity ([Fe/H]<-4.5) are known to be enhanced in carbon, and belong to the 'low-carbon band' (A(C)=log(C/H)+12~7.6). It is generally, although not universally, accepted that this peculiar chemical composition reflects the chemical composition of the gas cloud out of which these stars were formed. The first ultra-metal-poor star discovered, HE 0107-5240, is also enhanced in carbon and belongs to the 'low-carbon band'. It has recently been claimed to be a long-period binary, based on radial velocity measurements. It has also been claimed that this binarity may explain its peculiar composition as being due to mass transfer to a former AGB …

Fourier analysis of HD 49330 CoRoT light curve

2009

Be stars undergo outbursts producing a circumstellar disk from the ejected material. The beating of non-radial pulsations has been put forward as a possible mechanism of ejection. We analyze the pulsational behavior of the early B0.5IVe star HD 49330 observed during the first CoRoT long run towards the Galactical anticenter (LRA1). This Be star is located close to the lower edge of the {beta} Cephei instability strip in the HR diagram and showed a 0.03mag outburst during the CoRoT observations. It is thus an ideal case for testing the aforementioned hypothesis.

Activity and accretion in {gamma} Vel and Cha I

2015

We use the fundamental parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, lithium abundance, and radial velocity) delivered by the GES consortium in the first internal data release to select the members of Gamma Vel and Cha I among the UVES and GIRAFFE spectroscopic observations. A total of 140 Gamma Vel members and 74 Cha I members were studied. The procedure adopted by the GES to derive stellar fundamental parameters provided also measures of the projected rotational velocity (vsini). We calculated stellar luminosities through spectral energy distributions, while stellar masses were derived by comparison with evolutionary tracks. The spectral subtraction of low-activity and slowly rotati…

A note on astrometric data and time varying Sun-Earth distance in the light of Carmeli metric

In this note, we describe shortly time varying Sun-Earth distance in the light of Carmeli metric and compare the result with recent astrometric data. The graphical plot suggests that there should be linear-linear correspondence between Sun-planets distances and their time variation. Not only that, the prediction made here suggests that Carmeli metric can be the sought after framework in order to describe the astrometric anomaly pertaining to the time varying distance of the Sun-Earth distance, and furthermore there are expected time varying distance effect between the Sun and other planets as well.

Special Section Guest Editorial: Advances in Agro-Hydrological Remote Sensing for Water Resources Conservation

2018

This special section focuses on the use of remote sensing tools in some of these areas, including monitoring the volume and turbidity in lake fresh water resources, retrieving soil organic matter from spectral information with particular attention to abandoned croplands and areas affected by wildfires, and identification and monitoring of natural and agricultural vegetation through emerging techniques such as shallow and deep learning algorithms. These data mining and analysis approaches are particularly promising and include convolutional neural network and the application of back propagation neural network algorithms for soil water content monitoring and the extraction of other canopy inf…
