Differences between orthopaedic evaluation and radiological reports of conventional radiographs in patients with minor trauma admitted to the emergen…

2017

Abstract Introduction During night and on weekends, in our emergency department there is no radiologist on duty or on call: thus, X-ray examinations (XR) are evaluated by the orthopaedic surgeon on duty and reported the following morning/monday by radiologists. The aim of our study was to examine the discrepancy rate between orthopaedists and radiologists in the interpretation of imaging examinations performed on patients in our tertiary level orthopaedic institution and the consequences of delayed diagnosis in terms of patient management and therapeutic strategy. Materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed all cases of discrepancy between orthopaedists and radiologists, which were ca…

Antenatal Steroids and Antioxidant Enzyme Activity in Preterm Infants: Influence of Gender and Timing

2009

Antenatal steroids have improved the survival of preterm infants; however, the mechanism of action is not fully understood. We aimed to establish an association between antenatal steroids and antioxidant activity and postnatal oxidative stress. In a prospective cohort study, extremely preterm neonates receiving antenatal steroids (CORT) or not (NOCORT) were enrolled. An association between antenatal steroids and activities of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione cycle enzymes in cord blood was found. In addition, reduced oxidative stress (GSH/GSSG ratio, CORT vs. NOCORT, 35.68 + or - 12.20 vs. 28.38 + or - 9.92; p < 0.01) and, decreased oxidation of proteins (ortho-tyrosine/phenylalanine rat…

Impact of psychological risk factors on disaster rescue operations: the case of Italian volunteers.

2007

This paper reports on research into the characteristics of emergency rescue workers, with a focus on psychological distress. We present the results of a study of volunteers from the Italian national civil protection programme. A questionnaire was administered to 2,576 subjects from all over Italy. Most respondents were men, mostly unemployed, whose average level of education was higher than that among most Italian volunteers. Many were poorly endowed with basic skills, with large differences according to geography. Many expected to convert their volunteer activities into permanent jobs. Using this data, we employed a logistical regression model to analyse the risk of low, moderate and sever…

Effect of exercise training on in vitro LDL oxidation and free radical-induced hemolysis: the HERITAGE Family Study.

2006

Oxidant stress and overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Oxidative modifications of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are thought to play an early and critical role in atherogenesis. LDL oxidation can be reproduced in vitro, but results usually show a large interindividual variation not entirely explained by the environment. Free radical-induced hemolysis is also proposed to reveal the overall antioxidant capacity. The roles of genetic factors and exercise on the variability of both measures were investigated. The study was conducted in 146 healthy individuals from 28 families participating in a 20-week exercise-training progra…

Indications and limitations of the fixator TGF “Gex-Fix” in proximal end humeral fractures

2014

Abstract The incidence of fractures of the humerus has increased exponentially in recent years. The most used classifications for humerus fracture are morphological (Neer), biological (AO/ASIF) and descriptive (Hertel). The types of surgical treatment for humerus fracture include prosthetic replacement and synthesis using different devices, including the Tension Guide Fixator (TGF), Gex-Fix. External fixation for displaced proximal humeral fractures avoids dissection and soft tissue stripping and has been reported by some authors to be associated with higher union rates, a lower incidence of avascular necrosis, less scarring of the scapulohumeral interface, and faster rehabilitation compare…

Associations between intracranial pressure, intraocular pressure and mean arterial pressure in patients with traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuri…

2008

Introduction: Anatomical proximity of the eye and the intracranial space is a fact but the existence of physiological and pathophysiological relationships between them is elusive. The objective of this study was to explore anatomical and pathophysiological interactions between the eye and the intracranial space and to assess clinical utility of intraocular pressure measurement in estimation of intracranial pressure in patients with brain injuries and to discover how haemodynamic instability could influence these interactions. Controversy surrounds the recent literature concerning this problem and the consensus has not been achieved. Materials and methods: We evaluated the correlation betwee…

Emergency toe-to-hand transfer for post-traumatic finger reconstruction: A multicenter case series

2019

Abstract Background The aim of this paper was to evaluate the outcomes of a homogenous series of emergency with a toe-to-hand transfer reconstructions with a different timing: immediate (same surgical step with the debridement), primary (in the first 24 h), early (24–72 h after the debridement) or delayed (72 h-7 days). Materials and methods Between 2001 and 2011, 31 patients received an immediate reconstruction with a toe-to-hand transfer. Data on indications, timing, type of surgery, complications and outcomes (sensory and motor recovery, patient satisfaction) were extrapolated and recorded. Results Most of the procedures in our series (71%) were performed in the first 24 h. Survival rate…

Olecranon fractures in adults: factors influencing outcome.

2003

In a retrospective, non-randomized study, we reviewed our experience with the operative treatment of olecranon fractures to find out which factors correlate with subjective complaints and functional outcome. A total of 95 consecutive olecranon fractures were operatively treated in our level I trauma institution between 1 March 1992 and 1 March 2000. Medical records and X-rays of all patients were evaluated. Three patients died, 23 were lost to follow-up. Fifty-eight of 69 available patients (84.0%) were reviewed clinically and/or radiologically after a mean time of 36 months. Fracture type, fracture classification, associated lesions, technical correctness of osteosynthesis, age and comorbi…

Radiological analysis, operative management and functional outcome of open book pelvic lesions: a 13-year cohort study.

2011

Abstract We present the clinical and radiological outcome of a 13-year cohort study of 38 open book pelvic lesions. All patients were treated in one Level I Trauma centre. In the posterior pelvis, sacro-iliac diastasis was seen in 31 patients, sacral fracture in 7. In all patients with sacro-iliac diastasis, the pubic bone was inferiorly displaced on the primary ap pelvic overview on the side of injury. All but one patient was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the symphysis pubis. Additional stabilization of the posterior pelvis was done in 9 patients. 32 patients were seen after a median follow up of 84 months. Majeed score and SF-36 questionnaire were used. Functional o…

Association between a comprehensive smoking ban and hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction: An observational study in the Autonomous Communi…

2020

Objective: To assess the association between a comprehensive smoking ban and hospitalization rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods: An observational study was conducted to assess changes in hospital admission rates for AMI in the Autonomous Community of Valencia, Spain (population 5 million), during the period 1995-2013. Law 28/2005 prohibited smoking in all enclosed spaces (public and private), and Law 42/2010 extended the ban to bars and restaurants as well as children's playgrounds and access areas of schools and hospitals. Data on hospital admissions were obtained from the Hospital Discharge Database (CMBD) of the Autonomous Community. Annual hospital admission rates per …
