Towards understanding the abundance of non-pollen palynomorphs : A comparison of fossil algae, algal pigments and sedaDNA from temperate lake sedimen…

2018

Given the increased interest in non-pollen palynomorphs (microscopic objects other than pollen identified from pollen slides) in palaeoecological studies, it is necessary to seek a deeper understanding of the reliability of these results. We combined quantitative information of algal pigments and sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) of phylotaxonomical resolution to validate the richness and abundance of fossil algae in the sediment of a small temperate lake. For the first time, fossil and sedaDNA algae data were combined in a composite data-set and used to reconstruct algae turnover rates over the last 14,500 years. This comparison serves as both an example of howfossil algae can be used to a…

Microbial microstratification, inorganic carbon photoassimilation and dark carbon fixation at the chemocline of the meromictic Lake Cadagno (Switzerl…

2001

The microstratification of the microbial community at the chemocline of Lake Cadagno and the associated inorganic carbon fixation activity was studied by fine layer sampling. A deep chlorophyll maximum caused by diatoms overlying Cryptomonas was found at the upper edge of the chemocline. A high population density of phototrophic sulphur bacteria, mainly Amoebobacter cf. purpureus, occurred closely below the oxic-anoxic boundary. Despite the small fraction of total lake volume represented by the chemocline, half of the total carbon photoassimilation of the lake occurred within the chemocline with approximately equal contributions by oxygenic and anoxygenic phototrophs. Rates of dark carbon f…

Experimental Study on the Diet of Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) under Different Ecological Conditions in a Shallow Lake

2004

We studied the diet of the eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki with in situ experimental mesocosms located in a shallow lake. Different nutrient concentrations (phosphorus and nitrogen) and fish population densities were tested. Our results confirm that it is a planktivorous species, with also a great ingestion of algae and detritus. Nutrient fertilization caused almost no changes in this species feeding behavior, but larger mosquitofish stocks induced a shift to zooplanktivory and a decline in detritivory. When macrophytes were present, the predation effect focused on zooplankton and plant-associated animals, otherwise predation on bottom macroinvertebrates increased. Females preyed up…

The Effect of perturbations on phytoplankton assemblages in a deep reservoir (Vouglans, France)

2003

Disturbances, such as rainfall and hydrological management of Vouglans reservoir, seem to influence the establishment of the ecological system inside this man-made lake. In this paper, the main effect of these disturbances are changes in the z mix :z eu ratio, with a shift in the composition and phytoplankton dynamics, and consequently in the Shannon’s diversity. The seasonal changes found in the surface layers of Vouglans reservoir were typical for mesotrophic and temperate lakes, but some perturbations induced the ‘reversion’ to an earlier stage in the expected successional pattern during the stratification period. This early-state displayed an intensive proliferation of the filamentous u…

Plankton biodiversity in a landscape of shallow water bodies (Mediterranean coast, Spain)

2003

A large spatial heterogeneity was detected in La Safor, a coastal area with different kinds of small and shallow water bodies. The area exhibits a sharp gradient in eutrophication (0.004–20 mgP l−1; 0.6–457 μg Chl a l−1) and varied water body features (morphology: size, depth; hydrology; vegetation, etc.). These factors result in a high diversity of aquatic habitats within the area. One hundred and twenty eight species of microalgae were identified in the 32 sampling stations studied (in the wet and dry periods). The phytoplankton richness varied between 1 and 21 species, the Shannon-Wiener index range was 0–3 bits, the index of floral originality (IFO) range was 0.1 – 0.6. A total number o…

Phytoplankton in extreme environments: importance and consequences of habitat permanency

2020

AbstractThere is hardly any sunshine exposed surface on this Earth, be it water or terrain, which would not support some biota. Still, many habitats offer harsh conditions requiring specialized physiological adaptations to survive. These environments are referred to as extremes; often inhabited by extremophilic organisms. In this review, characteristic species and assemblage properties of phytoplankton inhabiting extreme environments (especially lakes and pools where planktic life is potentially possible and independently of their origin) in terms of alkalinity, acidity, DOC, salinity, temperature, light and mixing regime will be outlined. Lakes characterized by more than a single extreme a…

Role of protozooplankton in the diet of North Sea autumn spawning herring (Clupea harengus) larvae

2022

AbstractThe role of small prey (< 200 µm) in larval marine fish nutrition is largely understudied. Here, we explore the contribution of protozooplankton (PZP 20–200 µm) to larval fish diets, compared to metazoan microzooplankton (MZP 55–200 µm). More specifically, we tested whether the contribution of PZP increased during the low productivity season and decreased as larvae grow. We used North Sea autumn spawning herring (Clupea harengus) as a case study, as it is a key species with high commercial and ecological importance. In autumn and winter, the potential PZP and MZP prey was dominated by cells < 50 µm (mainly Gymnodiniales, Pronoctiluca pelagica,Tripos spp. and Strombidium spp.),…

Paleoclimatic and Paleoceanographic reconstruction of the Pleistocene – Holocene through the study of planktonic foraminifera of two sediment cores, …

2014

The study of climate and oceanographic setting in the recent past plays and important role to prevent what we can expect for the future. This research project is based on the study of two sedimentary cores (ATA13-OF-KT1 and ATA13-OF-KT18), collected during OCEANOGRAFLU 2013 oceanographic survey in Atlantic Ocean, southwestward of the Azores Islands, near the Mid-Atlantic ridge. In agreement with members of Paleobiodiversity and Paleoenvironmental Research Center belonging to the Department of Earth History (MNHN) of Paris, I’ll have to study these two cores, under the supervision of Prof. Annachiara Bartolini, member of this research unit, and Prof. Antonio Caruso (DiSTeM, University of Pal…

A European Multi Lake Survey dataset of environmental variables, phytoplankton pigments and cyanotoxins

2018

Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The Europea…

How picky can you be? Temporal variations in trophic niches of co-occurring suspension-feeding species

2014

Abstract Suspension-feeders largely dominate faunal communities on rocky shores and compete for food using different feeding strategies. We used stable isotopes to assess the individual specialization within common suspension-feeder populations and to evaluate both inter-specific and intra-specific differences in food source exploitation. Trophic niches were characterized by metrics calculated in a space formed by mixing model outputs. Honeycomb worms ( Sabellaria alveolata ), blue mussels ( Mytilus edulis ) and barnacles ( Chthamalus montagui ), as well as three organic matter sources (benthic microalgae, phytoplankton and green macroalgae) were surveyed over a year using stable isotopic c…
