Control of Erigeron bonariensis with Thymbra capitata, Mentha piperita, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, and Santolina chamaecyparissus Essential Oils
2020
In the search of sustainable and environmentally friendly methods for weed control, there is increasing interest in essential oils (EOs) as an approach to reduce synthetic herbicide use. The phytotoxicity of Thymbra capitata, Mentha piperita, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, and Santolina chamaecyparissus EOs against the noxious weed Erigeron bonariensis were evaluated in pre- and post-emergence assays in greenhouse conditions. The EOs were applied at 2, 4, and 8 µ
Spread of tomato brown rugose fruit virus in sicily and evaluation of the spatiotemporal dispersion in experimental conditions
2020
Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is an emerging pathogen that causes severe disease in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) crops. The first ToBRFV outbreak in Italy occurred in 2018 in several Sicilian provinces, representing a serious threat for tomato production. In the present work, the spatiotemporal displacement of ToBRFV in Sicily was evaluated, analyzing a total of 590 lots of tomato seed, 982 lots of plantlets from nurseries and 100 commercial greenhouses. Furthermore, we investigated the ToBRFV spreading dynamic in a greenhouse under experimental conditions. Results showed several aspects related to ToBRFV dispersion in protected tomato crops. In detail, an important decrease …
Effect of magnetic fields on seedling growth and cyto-morphogenesis inSinapis albaL.
2001
Abstract The magnetic treatment presented in this study could be included among cultivation procedures aimed at a better utilisation of plant species. The treatment enhances seedling growth (expressed in fresh weight or in length of the hypocotyl) stimulates morphogenic events (premature differentiation of the reticulate xylem elements, increased wall thickness, reduction of the xylem diameter, increase of acid phosphatases) and renders the seedling batches more homogeneous. Our study demonstrates that exposure to weak (30 mT) magnetic fields for short periods (15, 30, 60 seconds) stimulates seedling growth.
Un-rooted grafted cuttings for eggplant plug-transplant production and shipping: simulated transportation and healing requirements
2019
Vegetable grafting is one of the most effective eco-friendly techniques to overcome pests and soilborne diseases in modern cropping systems of fruiting vegetables. Due to the increased farmers’ preference for grafted seedlings of high quality and better performance, the use of vegetable grafted plants is rapidly spreading and expanding over the world and intensive researches on new commercial production systems are under way. However, in many areas of the world, due to the high cost of skilled manpower, the use of grafted plug plants is still limited causing a relatively slow development of the grafting nursery industry. The aim of this work was to evaluate a possible use of un-rooted graft…
Preliminary Results on the Effect of Magnetic Fields on Anther Culture and Pollen Germination of Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.
2003
Exposure to electromagnetic fields seems to modify the biological behaviour of seeds, roots, pollen grains and buds of several plants. This procedure has been also suggested as a tool to improve the utilization of plant species (Firetto et al., 2000, 2001, Petruszewski S., 1996). Since the first haploid embryogenic calli production and plantlet regeneration by anther culture of C. clementina Hort. ex Tan. 'Nules' was reported (Germany et al., 1994), several studies have been carried out to improve both the frequency of microspore embryogenesis and the percentage of plantlet regeneration. To enlarge the number of respondent genotypes and to improve the induction rate (the frequency of pollen…
Receptiveness of some tropical soils from banana fields in Martinique to the arbuscular fungus Glomus intraradices
2000
Tropical crops of great economic importance such as banana are known to benefit from mycorrhizal association. Development and survival of introduced mycorrhizal propagules depend not only on the crops but mainly on the edaphic conditions and soil types where the symbiosis is established. Seven soils from banana fields of Martinique were sampled and tested to determine their receptiveness to mycorrhizal inoculation. Biological tests involved cultivation of 10 leek plantlets in pots containing soil inoculated with a range of mycorrhizal propagule densities (3, 10, 30, 100, 300 propagules/100 g soil). Mycorrhizal colonisation was recorded after 2 weeks of growth and tentatively correlated with…
Effect of rhizosphère bacteria and endomycorrhizal fungi on the growth of Christmas rose (Helleborus niger L.)
2010
International audience; Micropropagated and vegetative (by rhizome cuttings) propagated plants of Christmas rose ( Helleborus niger L.) were tested for their responses to the inoculation with microorganisms in order to optimize root growth and development. In our experiment, plants were inoculated with arbuscular endomycorrhizal fungi or/and Agrobacterium radiobacter . The investigation indicated that inoculation with A. radiobacter had significantly positive effect on growth and development of plants multiplicated by in vitro techniques as compared to the dual inoculation. This study indicates that, biotization can be beneficial to plant growth in in vitro plant production systems but inoc…
Effect of titanium (IV) application on some enzymatic activities in several developing stages of red pepper plants
1994
Abstract The effect of two titanium (IV) compounds, titanium ascorbate and titanium chloride, on some enzymatic activities, such as catalase, peroxidase, lipoxygenase and nitrate reductase in seeds, embryos, and seedlings and adult plants of red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), was studied. A stimulatory effect of titanium was observed for every iron‐depending enzyme studied at all developing stages as well as for nitrate reductase but only for whole plants. This occurs because Ti+3/Ti+4 catalizes the activity of iron and enhances iron‐dependent enzymes.
