Gelatinases and their tissue inhibitors in a group of subjects with metabolic syndrome.
2013
Aim To evaluate matrix metalloproteases (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteases (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2 in a group of subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS) subdivided according to the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus. Methods We examined in 90 subjects (51 men and 39 women) with MS, defined following the International Diabetes Federation criteria, and subsequently subdivided into diabetic subjects (22 men and 11 women) and nondiabetic subjects s (29 men and 28 women), the plasma concentrations of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 using specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Results We found a significant increase in plasma concentrations of MMP-2, MMP…
Clozapine plasma level monitoring for prediction of rehospitalization schizophrenic outpatients.
2011
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this naturalistic exploratory study was to examine whether blood antipsychotic drug concentrations can predict rehospitalizations in chronically medicated patients. METHODS: The study included schizophrenic outpatients under clozapine (CLZ) maintenance treatment, supervised by therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Patients were observed for a period of 21 months. Their on average monthly measured plasma levels and the date of rehospitalizations were recorded. The variability of the first 3 CLZ plasma levels, measured in 3.6 months, was compared between patients with and without rehospitalization. RESULTS: 23 patients participated of which 6 patients were rehospitalized…
Detection of deuterium retention by LIBS at different background pressures
2017
ITER plans foresee the quantitative diagnostics of fuel retention in reactor walls at near-atmospheric pressures. Using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for this purpose assumes a reliable resolving of Balmer α-lines of hydrogen isotopes in spectra of plasma produced by focused laser radiation onto the target surface. To develop LIBS for quantitative diagnostics of fuel retention during the maintenance breaks of ITER, the effect of background gas pressure on the laser-induced plasma characteristics has been studied. The background pressure limits the expansion rate of plasma and as a result it leads to higher plasma concentrations. At the same time the limiting factor of the reso…
Rizatriptan in the treatment of migraine.
2006
Migraine is a common, disabling disorder associated with considerable personal and societal burden. Current guidelines recommend triptans for the acute treatment of migraine unlikely to respond to less effective therapies. Rizatriptan is a second-generation triptan available in tablet or orally disintegrating tablet (wafer) formulations that offers several advantages over other members of its class. Rizatriptan is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and achieves maximum plasma concentrations more quickly than other triptans, providing rapid pain relief. Clinical trials have shown that rizatriptan is at least as effective or superior to other oral migraine-specific agents in the…
Behaviour of the plasma concentration of gelatinases and their tissue inhibitors in subjects with venous leg ulcers.
2015
Venous leg ulcers are common in subjects with chronic venous insufficiency. The increased intraluminal pressure causes alteration of the skin microcirculation, leukocyte activation and release of proteolytic enzymes leading to ulceration. An impaired expression and activity of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) might influence extracellular matrix degradation and deposition in chronic venous ulcers with the failure of the healing process. Our aim was to evaluate plasma concentration of gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) and their inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in subjects with venous leg ulcers before and after the compression therapy. We enrolled 36 subjects (12 …
Physiological pharmacokinetic model for ceftazidime disposition in the rat and its application to prediction of plasma concentrations in humans
1993
Abstract A physiological pharmacokinetic model for the disposition of ceftazidime in the rat was developed. The model is composed of 10 compartments which represent most of the organs and tissues of the body. Ceftazidime concentration-time profiles in the organs and tissues represented in the model were simulated and compared with the observed concentration-time data after i.v. administration of 5 and 20 mg of antibiotic. The model gave an acceptable description of the observed data. The steady-state volume of distribution and total clearance of ceftazidime in healthy humans predicted from data obtained in the rat (0.21 l/kg and 113 ml/min, respectively) were similar to the values reported …

Early postoperative substitution procedure of the antioxidant ascorbic acid.
2005
Postoperatively reduced concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) in plasma (or =45.5 micromol/l (or =800 microg/dl)) is commonly interpreted as increased metabolic requirements, but it is not shown yet that the patient benefits from a substitution toward normal levels of AA. This is due to the missing knowledge on how to substitute AA effectively to normal plasma values in postoperative patients. Therefore, a postoperative AA substitution procedure "overnight" to normal values in plasma was investigated on a postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) in a university hospital.Fifty-seven operated patients were randomly assigned to a control- or intervention group (CG and IG, respectively). In all pa…
Hypercholesterolemia and haemostatic function changes
1990
Patients with hypercholesterolemia have elevated levels of LDL and reduced plasma concentration of HDL.
Interaction of allopurinol with phenprocoumon in man.
1977
Conditions in two patients on long-term phenprocoumon (Marcumar®) treatment are reported who had signs of phenprocoumon overdosage when given simultaneously allopurinol. The determination of phenprocoumon plasma concentrations in one patient showed that phenprocoumon accumulates for several weeks during treatment with allopurinol. Signs of phenprocoumon overdosage thus can appear long time after starting allopurinol treatment.
