The interaction of electrons with quantized phonons and photons underlies the ultrafast dynamics of systems ranging from molecules to solids, and it gives rise to a plethora of physical phenomena experimentally accessible using time-resolved techniques. Green's function methods offer an invaluable interpretation tool since scattering mechanisms of growing complexity can be selectively incorporated in the theory. Computer vision and thermal monitoring of HMPE fibre rope condition during CBOS testing

Abstract Fibre rope usage in deep sea lifting operations is gaining more prominence in recent times. With rope minimum break loads (MBL) comparable to that of their steel wire counterparts, the use of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) ropes is seen as a viable option for use in subsea construction cranes. The ropes are worn out during use and visual inspection remains one of the main methods of determining whether a fibre rope is to be retired from use, therefore a natural extension is condition monitoring through computer vision. Real-time data processing in the ALICE High Level Trigger at the LHC

At the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, atomic nuclei are collided at ultra-relativistic energies. Many final-state particles are produced in each collision and their properties are measured by the ALICE detector. The detector signals induced by the produced particles are digitized leading to data rates that are in excess of 48 GB/$s$. The ALICE High Level Trigger (HLT) system pioneered the use of FPGA- and GPU-based algorithms to reconstruct charged-particle trajectories and reduce the data size in real time. The goal is to compare the interface evolution (vaporization and liquefaction rate, appearance time of liquid and vapour, energetic repartition) to predict the behaviour of the cathodes during an electric arc.

Nematic elastomers: From a microscopic model to macroscopic elasticity theory

A Landau theory is constructed for the gelation transition in cross-linked polymer systems possessing spontaneous nematic ordering, based on symmetry principles and the concept of an order parameter for the amorphous solid state. This theory is substantiated with help of a simple microscopic model of cross-linked dimers. Minimization of the Landau free energy in the presence of nematic order yields the neoclassical theory of the elasticity of nematic elastomers and, in the isotropic limit, the classical theory of isotropic elasticity. Effect of physical aging on the low-frequency vibrational density of states of a glassy polymer

The effects of the physical aging on the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of a polymeric glass is studied. The VDOS of a poly(methyl methacrylate) glass at low-energy (<15 meV), was determined from inelastic neutron scattering at low-temperature for two different physical thermodynamical states. One sample was annealed during a long time at temperature lower than Tg, and another was quenched from a temperature higher than Tg. It was found that the VDOS around the boson peak, relatively to the one at higher energy, decreases with the annealing at lower temperature than Tg, i.e., with the physical aging.

Generalized heat equation and transitions between different heat-transport regimes in narrow stripes

Abstract In the framework of weakly nonlocal thermodynamic theory, in this paper we derive a nonlocal and nonlinear heat-transport equation beyond the Fourier law by means of thermodynamic considerations in agreement with the second law. The obtained equation describes the transitions among different heat-transport regimes. The stability of the solution of that equation is also analyzed in a special case.
