The abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere, on land, and especially in water bodies is well acknowledged. In this study, we establish an optical method based on three different techniques, namely, specular reflection to probe the medium, transmission spectroscopy measurements for the detection and identification, and a speckle pattern for monitoring the sedimentation of MPs filtrated from wastewater sludge and suspended in ethanol. We used first Raman measurements to estimate the presence and types of different MPs in wastewater sludge samples. We also used microscopy to identify the shapes of the main MPs. Structure, morphology and crystallization of a random ethylene-propylene copolymer

The structure, morphology, and crystallization behavior of a random ethylene–propylene copolymer, containing 2 wt % ethylene sequences, are analyzed and compared with those of a plain polypropylene sample by means of optical and scanning microscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and calorimetry. For the copolymer, different polymorphs (α, γ and smectic modifications) and morphologies can be obtained through changes in the crystallization and annealing conditions. The analysis of the structural results suggests that the γ phase of isotactic polypropylene can be generated for high molecular mass samples with drastic decreases in the undercooling. The role of filler type in the photo-oxidation behaviour of micro- and nano-filled polypropylene

The rising interest in polymer nanocomposites leads also to an increasing concern for their photo-oxidation resistance. The main properties and photo-oxidation behaviour of polypropylene-based microcomposites and nanocomposites were investigated. The results show that the use of nanosized calcium carbonate may lead to a higher photo-oxidation rate than that of pristine polypropylene, in a way that is comparable to organo-modified nanoclays. It is also observed that nanosized calcium carbonate causes higher photodegradation rates than microsized calcium carbonate. A New Calibration Method for the Accurate Determination of Ethylene Content in Ethylene-Propylene Copolymers by CRYSTEX-IR

Summary: CRYSTEX is a fully automated instrument for the determination of Xylene Solubles in polypropylene and ethylene-propylene copolymers, providing an excellent correlation with gravimetric methods. The instrument can be equipped with a dual band infrared (IR) detector to quantify the ethylene weight percentage (C2%) in the amorphous fraction, and in the whole polymer sample. In this work, a new approach based on multiple linear regression (MLR) models is presented, which makes use of two independent IR absorbance signals acquired simultaneously by the detector. Calculation of small-angle neutron scattering by macromolecules in the semicrystalline state

The conformation of macromolecules in the semicrystalline state has been studied by various authors with respect to the validity of the adjacent re-entry — or switchboard model by application of small-angle neutron scattering. Analytical as well as Monte-Carlo calculations show that the experimental results for melt crystallized polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene can be interpreted on the basis of the solidification model. In this model it is assumed that crystallization occurs by straightening of coil sequences without a long range diffusion process.
Stiffness and strength of flax fiber/polymer matrix composites

Flax fiber composites with thermoset and thermoplastic polymer matrices have been manufactured and tested for stiffness and strength under uniaxial tension. Flax/polypropylene and flax/maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene composites are produced from compound obtained by coextrusion of granulated polypropylene and flax fibers, while flax fiber mat/vinylester and modified acrylic resin composites are manufactured by resin transfer molding. The applicability of rule-of-mixtures and orientational averaging based models, developed for short fiber composites, to flax reinforced polymers is considered. POLYM. Plastic waste or scraps are generated from two main sources: industrial wastes and post-consumer wastes. By using the flotation method, generally two fractions are obtained from municipal post-consumer wastes: a light fraction, floating on water, and a heavy fraction. The former is essentially made of low and high density polyethylene—LDPE, HDPE—and polypropylene—PP; the heavy fraction is formed by poly(vinyl chloride)—PVC—and poly(ethylene terephthalate)—PET. The compatibilization mechanism of some compatibilizers for blends of polyolefins with a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was studied. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were blended with a semirigid LCP (SBH) in a batch mixer, either with and without compatibilizers. The latter were two commercially available samples of functionalized polyolefins, that is, a PE-g-MA (HDM) and a PP-g-AA (Polybond 1001) copolymer and some purposely synthesized PE-g-LCP and PP-g-LCP copolymers. Inverse response of polypropylene to gamma radiation under vacuum

Abstract The effect of gamma radiation under vacuum on polypropylene is analysed on the basis of a simple kinetic model. The influence of the irradiation parameters, total absorbed dose and dose rate, on the rates of the main reactions occurring during irradiation, i.e. β-scission, addition to double bonds and termination, is studied. Using kinetic equations, and free radical and double bond balance relationships, we show that it is possible to rationalize the response of polypropylene to gamma radiation. Abstract Polymer solidification under processing conditions is a complex phenomenon in which the kinetics of flow, high thermal gradients and high pressures determine the product morphology. The study of polymer structure formed under pressure has been mainly made using conventional techniques such as dilatometry and differential scanning calorimetry under isothermal conditions or non isothermal conditions but at cooling rates several orders of magnitude lower than those experienced in industrial processes.
