Mechanical properties of recycled polymers

Modifications of structure and morphology of the polymers induced by the thermomechanical stress (or by the presence of water for some polymers) during reprocessing can cause a drastic deterioration of mechanical properties of the recycled material. The property reprocessing relationships are an important tool to determine not only the properties of the recycled polymers but also the strategies to use (processing conditions, stabilizers, fillers, compatibilizers, etc) in order to obtain recycled polymers with good mechanical properties. Structural and morphological rearrangements in quenched poly(ethylene) by simultaneous SAXS/WAXS

Structure formation by crystallization from the melt in a wide range of cooling rates (0.08-1 000°C/s) in low-density polyethylene has been studied by simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering at the synchroton radiation source of DESY. The occurrence of two periodicities, characterized by different angular position of Bragg's maxima, was observed, pointing to the existence of two types of lamellar stacks, associated with two different long period values L 1 and L 2 (L 1 > L 2 ). Hydrogels for potential colon drug release by thiol-ene conjugate addition of a new inulin derivative.

Inulin was chosen as a starting polymer for biocompatible, pH-sensitive and biodegradable hydrogels. Three INUDVSA-TT hydrogels were obtained by crosslinking inulin derivatives with trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) under varying conditions. The resulting hydrogels were cell compatible, as demonstrated by MTS and trypan blue exclusion assays acting on Caco-2 cells, and were biodegraded by inulinase and esterase, thus suggesting their use as colonic drug delivery systems. 2-Methoxyestradiol, an anti-cancer drug, was soaked in INUDVSA-TT hydrogels and its in vitro release and apoptotic effect on Caco-2 cells were evaluated.

Copolymerization of VDF and HFP in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: A Robust Approach for Modeling Precipitation and Dispersion Kinetics

A kinetic model is developed for the heterogeneous free-radical copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene in supercritical CO2. The model accounts for polymerization in both the dispersed (polymer-rich) phase and in the continuous (polymer-free) supercritical phase, for radical interphase transport, diffusion limitations, and chain-length-dependent termination in the polymer-rich phase. A parameter evaluation strategy is developed and detailed to estimate most of the kinetic parameters a priori while minimizing their evaluation by direct fitting. We have investigated the surface reorganization characteristics of a novel amphiphilic diblock copolymer, poly(acetic acid-2-(2-(4-vinyl-phenoxy)-ethoxy)-ethylester)-block-polystyrene (PAEES-b-PS), in response to varying interfaces from air to water and vice-versa at various temperatures. Polymer Brushes on Flat and Curved Substrates: Scaling Concepts and Computer Simulations

The scaling concepts for isolated flexible macromolecules in good solvent grafted with one chain end to a flat surface (polymer mushrooms) as well as for layers of many overlapping end-grafted chain molecules (polymer brushes) are introduced. Monte Carlo attempts to test these concepts are briefly reviewed. Then the extension of these concepts to polymer brushes grafted to the interior of a cylinder surface is discussed. Influence of surface morphology on melting of polymer crystals II. Loops of random length and partially random reentry

Abstract The melting behavior of single crystals with loops of random length and partially random reentry has been calculated under two different assumptions: (1) at each temperature the loops have an equilibrium end-to-end distance distribution and (2) a certain end-to-end distance distribution of the loops, ω(h), determined by the kinetics of the crystallization is frozen in and maintained during the whole heating process. A new liquid surface neutron reflectometer and its application to the study of DPPC in a monolayer at the air/water interface

A constant wavelength neutron reflectometer is described. Using this reflectometer, the neutron reflectivities from phosphatidylcholine monolayers in the highly condensed LC phase on ultra pure H2O and D2O have been measured on a Wilhelmy film balance. The neutron reflectivities have been carefully compared with those obtained by the X-ray method applied to the same monolayer under similar conditions. A new approach to analyzing a combined set of data composed of X-ray and neutron reflectivities has been used.
