UV-Free Microfluidic Particle Fabrication at Low Temperature Using ARGET-ATRP as the Initiator System
2016
Characterization of a fiber-reinforced new fully aromatic liquid crystalline polymer
1998
A new rigid liquid crystalline polymer that demonstrates good mechanical and thermomechanical properties and acceptable processing temperature has been recently synthesized and characterized. The melting temperature and some thermomechanical properties do not seem, however, suitable for use in some applications at high temperature or in the presence of aggressive fluids. The use of appropriate inorganic fillers can overcome these shortcomings. In this work the new LCP, polymerized in a bench-scale apparatus, and the same sample filled with carbon fibers are characterized. The properties of the carbon fiber filled LCP are compared with those of another filled wholly aromatic commercial LCP,…
Effect of compatibilization on the photo-oxidation behaviour of polyethylene/polyamide 6 blends and their nanocomposites
2015
Abstract Polymer based nanocomposites are increasingly attracting interest from academia and industry, and the use of polymer blends as matrices greatly increase their potential field of application. In order to improve their characteristics, the use of compatibilizers acting on the blend components is mandatory. However, this also leads to rising concerns regarding the behaviour of polymer blend based nanocomposites upon being subjected to photo-oxidative degradation. It is known that morphology can deeply influence the photo-oxidative behaviour, and this can be therefore deeply influenced by the blend components and by the use of compatibilizers. In this work, polymer blend nanocomposites…
Rheological study of gel phenomena during epoxide network formation in the presence of sepiolite
2012
The dynamic behaviour during the crosslinking of an epoxy polymer near the gel point was monitored using rheological multiple frequency experiments. The influence of a needle-shaped inorganic nanofiller, sepiolite, either non-modified or organically surface modified during the cure process in the presence of an aliphatic and an aromatic hardener was investigated. The validity of various criteria for determining the gel point was examined for the crosslinking of these filled thermosets. The Winter–Chambon criterion at the gel point is obeyed by the unfilled and by the non-modified sepiolite-filled epoxy matrix with either of the two hardeners. However, physical gels are formed in the presenc…
Behaviour of modified and unmodified polybutadienes in the semidilute regime
1997
Abstract The association behaviour of polybutadiene modified with 4-phenyl-l,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione was studied in semidilute solution through static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results were compared with the unmodified polybutadiene, whose behavior in semidilute solution was also studied as function of the molecular weight. At higher concentrations a small-angle excess scattering in SLS and a slow mode motion in DLS were observed both for modified and unmodified polybutadienes suggesting the presence of large clusters. Increasing the polymer concentration, the mass fraction of the slow motion increases up to values near 1, indicating a proximity to the gel point. For po…
(1-Adamantyl)methyl glycidyl ether: a versatile building block for living polymerization.
2014
(1-Adamantyl)methyl glycidyl ether (AdaGE) is introduced as a versatile monomer for oxyanionic polymerization, enabling controlled incorporation of adamantyl moieties in aliphatic polyethers. Via copolymerization with ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) and subsequent cleavage of the acetal protection groups of EEGE, hydrophilic linear polyglycerols with an adjustable amount of pendant adamantyl moieties are obtained. The adamantyl unit permits control over thermal properties and solubility profile of these polymers (LCST). Additionally, AdaGE is utilized as a termination agent in carbanionic polymerization, affording adamantyl-terminated polymers. Using these structures as macroinitiators fo…
Radiation synthesis of polyaspartamide functionalised hydrogels for sustained release of fragrances
2005
The aim of the present investigation is to assess the possibility of obtaining a biocompatible material device which is able to deliver oil-soluble fragrances in air over a length of time. Aqueous solutions of polyaspartamide functionalised with glycidyl methacrylate have been cross linked through gamma irradiation in the presence of a lipophilic model fragrance, emulsified prior to irradiation. Two emulsification conditions have been considered at two different concentrations of both fragrance and surfactant in water. Chemical hydrogels have been obtained in correspondence to two irradiation absorbed doses and have been characterised for their solubility properties and swelling ability in …
Complex Formation of DNA with Oppositely Charged Polyelectrolytes of Different Chain Topology: Cylindrical Brushes and Dendrimers
2007
The complex formation between DNA (pUC19-supercoiled DNA, 2686 base pairs) and some polycations of different chain topologies in aqueous solution was studied by light scattering, gel electrophoresis, and AFM. The investigated polycations comprised cylindrical brush polymers with quaternized poly(vinylpyridine) and polyethylene imine side chains as well as a fifth generation dendrimer thus covering a broad molar mass regime of 3 × 104 g mol-1 < Mw < 1 × 107 g mol-1 and very different chemical charges/molecule, Z+, of 127 < Z+ < 5500. Irrespective of the polycation, the complexes formed in dilute solution exhibited a similar size in terms of the mean square radius of gyration, 〈Rg2〉, i.e., 30…
The influence of hydrophobic substitution on self-association of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) trib…
2007
Abstract A series of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers were synthesized by reaction between poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polyglycidol-b-poly(ethylene oxide) precursor copolymer and four n-alkyl isocyanates: ethyl, propyl, butyl and pentyl. After dissolution in water at room temperature the copolymers spontaneously form micelles. The critical micellization concentrations were determined by UV–VIS spectroscopy. The dimensions of the micelles, the aggregation numbers, and in some cases the micellar shape were determined by dynamic and static light scattering in a relatively broad temperature range. Special attention has be…
Collapse of Linear Polyelectrolyte Chains in a Poor Solvent: When Does a Collapsing Polyelectrolyte Collect its Counterions?
2008
To better understand the collapse of polyions in poor solvent conditions the effective charge and the solvent quality of the hypothetically uncharged polymer backbone need to be known. In the present work this is achieved by utilizing poly-2-vinylpyridine quaternized to 4.3% with ethylbromide. Conductivity and light scattering measurements were utilized to study the polyion collapse in isorefractive solvent/nonsolvent mixtures consisting of 1-propanol and 2-pentanone, respectively, at nearly constant dielectric constant. The solvent quality of the uncharged polyion could be quantified which, for the first time, allowed the experimental investigation of the effect of the electrostatic intera…
