Halloysite nanotubes as polyolefin fillers

2015

Effect of the orientation and rheological behaviour of biodegradable polymer nanocomposites

2014

Abstract The recent increasing interest towards biodegradable polymers has favoured the investigation on these systems, showing also their limits. On the other hand, the success achieved by nanocomposites has fostered the search for new systems where the polymer matrix is biodegradable. The final properties can depend on a number of factors, including the biodegradable polymer used as well as the nanosized filler, their mutual compatibility, the filler dispersion and the processing conditions. In this work, nanocomposites based on a starch-derived matrix and three different lamellar silicates were prepared, and the effects of the elongational flow on the dispersion, the improvement of inter…

Interaction in POSS-poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) nanocomposites

2013

Use of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in polymer-based nanocomposites is promising for the design of high-performance materials for several applications. In this study, nanocomposites based on ethylene-acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer and POSS molecules were prepared by melt mixing. In particular, partial cage POSS with different pendent organic groups was used to investigate the interaction between the –OH groups of POSS and the acrylic functionalities of the matrix. All nanocomposites were characterized by mechanical, rheological, thermal and spectroscopic analyses. In addition, PE-POSS compounds were prepared under the same processing conditions for sake of comparison. The POSS …

Thermomechanical degradation of polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend-clay nanocomposites

2014

Abstract Polymer nanocomposites are gaining a growing interest both in the academia and in the industrial field, because of some specific properties they can assure. However, the rise in the attention from the industry is also leading to concerns about their processing, which can involve issues which are not present in traditional polymers processing; furthermore, additional issues can arise when nanocomposites are based on a polymer blend rather than a single polymer. In this work, a systematic study on thermomechanical degradation and reprocessing behaviour of LDPE/PA6/Cloisite 15A systems has been performed. The characterization was based on rheological, mechanical and morphological anal…

Selective localization of organoclay and effects on the morphology and mechanical properties of LDPE/PA11 blends with distributed and co-continuous m…

2010

A study was made on the effect of small amounts of organically modified clay on the morphology and mechanical properties of blends of low-density polyethylene and polyamide 11 at different compositions. The influence of the filler on the blend morphology was investigated using wide angle X-ray diffractometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and selective extraction experiments. The filler was found to locate predominantly in the more hydrophilic polyamide phase. Although such uneven distribution does not have a significant effect on the onset of phase co-continuity of the polymer components, it brings about a drastic refinement of the microstructure for the blends both with dr…

Morphology control in biphasic hybrid systems of semiconducting materials.

2015

Simple blends of inorganic nanocrystals and organic (semiconducting) polymers usually lead to macroscopic segregation. Thus, such blends typically exhibit inferior properties than expected. To overcome the problem of segregation, polymer coated nanocrystals (nanocomposites) have been developed. Such nanocomposites are highly miscible within the polymer matrix. In this Review, a summary of synthetic approaches to achieve stable nanocomposites in a semiconducting polymer matrix is presented. Furthermore, a theoretical background as well as an overview concerning morphology control of inorganic NCs in polymer matrices are provided. In addition, the morphologic behavior of highly anisotropic na…

Ethylene-vinyl Acetate Thermoplastic Copolymers Filled with Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes: Effect of Hydrothermal Ageing on Mechanical, Thermal, and Ele…

2013

A range of properties of two commercial thermoplastic ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, Elvax 420 and Elvax 450, neat and as melt-mixed composite filled with 15 wt.-% of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), are studied in the “as produced” state and after hydrothermal ageing. Addition of MWCNTs into the neat copolymers introduces the functionality of electrical conductivity and significantly improves their mechanical properties, while thermal characteristics are slightly affected by the presence of carbon nanotubes. A remarkable increase of the elastic modulus (150%) and stress at failure (50%) in stress–strain experiments as well as creep resistance (40%) of the nanocomposites in c…

Experimental Studies for Modelling the Phase Behaviour of Monomer/Polymer/Disc Composites

2010

Nanoparticles do not stabilize the mixtures of epoxy monomer (prepolymer)/thermoplastic modifier (PS) and the ones of thermoplastic modifier dispersed within cured epoxy matrix. A small amount of thermoplastic co-polymer poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) [P(S-b-MMA)] of MMA 4-22 wt.%, mixed with PS, makes compatible the mixtures with monomer epoxy precursor and cured epoxy matrix. The mixtures of cured epoxy matrix with thermoplastic consisting of PS and P(S-b-MMA), with nanofil 1%, are stable: the instability produced by the nanofil is overcome by the stability provided by the co-polymer. A model by Balazs' group to explain the phase behaviour of polymer/clay composites is extended.

Chemical Approach to Functional Artificial Opals

2007

Artificial opals are self-assembled colloidal crystals, which consist of a cubic dense packing (fcc) of hard (not film-forming) colloids with diameters ranging from 200 to 900 nm. Because of their periodic nanostructure the assemblies are able to reflect light that matches their periodicity, i.e., UV- to IR-radiation depending on the size of the colloids. Thus, they present a subgroup of 'photonic crystals'. While, originally, the chemistry inside the colloids and the resulting opals was of minor significance, nowadays the chemical variation of opals is becoming more and more important for the preparation of functional and patterned opals. The search for functional opals is, therefore, espe…

Porphyrin-Polymer Networks, Worms, and Nanorods: pH-triggerable Hierarchical Self-assembly

2011

In this study, we present a novel, multifaceted pH-triggerable system of self-organized hierarchical nanostructures. The system consists of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) cylindrical brushes (PVP brushes) and can yield polymer-porphyrin networks, porphyrin loaded polymer brushes and pure porphyrin nanorods. In addition, the polymer influences the pK(a) and the mutual TPPS stacking geometry. Structures were characterized by AFM, dynamic light scattering using an IR laser, UV-Vis spectroscopy and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Supramolecular composite porphyrin structures that can be switched through external triggers have potential in photo…
