High molecular arborescent polyoxyethylene with hydroxyl containing shell

2004

Abstract Arborescent polyoxyethylene of high molar mass (2×10 5  g/mol) and narrow molar mass distribution was synthesized in a three-stage process. In the first stage a triblock copolymer of ethylene oxide (central block, DP ca. 90) and 2,3-epoxypropanol-1 (short flanking blocks, DP ca. 5) was synthesized. The potassium alcoholate derived from this copolymer was used to initiate the polymerization of ethylene oxide and the subsequent addition of protected glycidol (1-etoxyethyl glycidyl ether). After deprotection the short polyglycidol blocks were used as branching units for the next generation. Repeated step by step process leads to the ‘pom-pom like’ branched polyoxyethylene macromolecul…

Cylindrical Polypeptide Brushes

2005

Cylindrical brushes with poly(L-lysine) and poly(L-glutamate) side chains were prepared by grafting through and grafting from techniques. Grafting from is shown to be more successful for the synthesis of cylindrical brushes with high molar mass main and side chains.

Hygrothermal ageing of reprocessed polylactide

2012

[EN] The influence of an accelerated hygrothermal ageing simulation test on a commercial PLA and its three subsequent mechanically-reprocessed materials was studied. The analysis was focused on the water diffusion kinetics and the physico-chemical changes induced by the hygrothermal degradation. Water diffusion proceeded faster than chain relaxation processes, as defined by a Case II absorption model. It was proved that the water diffusion rate decreased with subsequent reprocessing cycles and increased with higher hygrothermal ageing temperatures. Hydrolytic chain scission provoked significant molar mass decays and consequent general losses of thermal and mechanical performance. The rearra…

Influence of short-term aging on mechanical properties and morphology of polymer-modified bitumen with recycled plastics from waste materials

2020

Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) is bitumen that has been specifically engineered with polymer for providing enhanced performance in service. The aging of bitumen is a main aspect that is able to affect its final performance: during the production phase in a hot mix plant, all the binders experience short-term aging due to the high processing temperature. The same is true during the production of the modified binder, when the polymer is dispersed at high temperature in the bitumen mass. This paper aims at studying the effect of short-term aging when using different types of modifiers such as recycled polymers obtained from waste materials. A 50/70 penetration-grade bitumen has been modified, …

Morphology and thermal properties of foams prepared via thermally induced phase separation based on polylactic acid blends

2012

Blends of poly-l-lactic acid with two different types of polylactic acid with different average molecular weights (50,000 and 175,000 g/mol, respectively) in different proportions (90/10, 80/20 and 70/30) were utilized in order to produce biodegradable and biocompatible scaffolds for soft tissue engineering applications. The scaffolds were produced via thermally induced phase separation starting from ternary systems where dioxane was the solvent and water the non-solvent. Morphology (average pore size and interconnection) was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Foams apparent density was also evaluated (porosity ranges from 87% to 92%). Moreover, a differential scanning calorimetry …

Rheological properties and morphology in LLDPE and PC based blends

1990

Abstract During an interlaboratory project on polymer blends (Technical Working Party-Polymer Blends-VAMAS), the rheological characteristics of some samples of blends of polycarbonate with linear low density polyethylene have been evaluated with the aid of a capillary rheometer. Some morphological observations on the extruded samples have also been performed through SEM and an attempt has been made to correlate the macroscopic and microscopic results.

Cylindrical morphologies in asymmetric ABC triblock copolymers

1997

In asymmetric ABC triblock copolymers with C being the matrix-forming majority component, the formation of cylindrical morphologies is governed by the sum of the volume fractions of the components A and B (Φ A + Φ B ) as well as by their ratio (Φ B /Φ A ). The paper describes the morphologies of various polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (SBM) and polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymers (SEBM) in dependence on these parameters. In addition to previously reported cylinder in cylinder (c i c, core shell) and helical (hel) morphologies, new microphase separated structures as cylinders at cylinder (c a c), undula…
