Modeling the effect of ethanol vapor on the germination time of Penicillium chrysogenum.

The influence of ethanol vapor on germination of Penicillium chrysogenum was determined on yeast nitrogen base plus glucose agar medium at 25 degrees C. Ethanol vapors were generated by 0 to 6% (wt/wt) ethanol solutions at the bottom of hermetically closed petri dishes. The logistic equation was used to describe the data as the percentage of germination versus time and to estimate the germination time. The effect of ethanol concentration on germination time was described by a new reparameterized equation, resulting in an estimated limiting ethanol concentration of 4.3%. Abstract The principle of minimum total potential energy and the primary principle of virtual power for stress gradient elasticity are presented as kinematic type constructs dual of analogous static type principles from the literature (Polizzotto, 2014; Polizzotto, 2015a). The extra gradient-induced boundary conditions are formulated as “boundary congruence conditions” on the microstructure’s deformation relative to the continuum, which ultimately require that the normal derivative of the stresses must vanish at the boundary surface. Electrosynthesis of Sn-Co nanowires in alumina membranes

A fabrication process of amorphous nanowires of Sn-Co alloys, based on electrodeposition into anodic alumina membranes, is described. It is shown that nanowires of tin-cobalt alloys with different compositions can be produced by varying electrodeposition time and concentration ratio of salts dissolved into the electrolytic bath. Importance of the chelating agent to produce amorphous Sn-Co alloys has also been addressed. Electrodepositions were carried out potentiostatically at -1 V versus Saturated Calomel Electrode and 60 degrees C for times ranging from 10 to 90 minutes; the atomic fraction of Co2+ in the aqueous electrolyte (Co2+/(Co2+ + Sn2+)) was varied from 0.33 to 0.67. Modern tissue engineering concepts integrate cells, scaffolds, signalling molecules and growth factors. For the purposes of regenerative medicine, fetal development is of great interest because it is widely accepted that regeneration recapitulates in part developmental processes. The ultimate message : a study of medieval tombstones in ducal Burgundy : 12th-16th centuries

The tombstone has long been neglected by historians. As obituaries and wills, tombstones reveal as much the relationship of the deceased to death that the management of their memory by their heirs. This study first shows the wealth of medieval Burgundy graves goods. Typological diversity adds to the richness of iconography with large amounts of effigial monuments. Tombs materialize burial of prestige. Originally reserved for prelates and princes, burial ad ecclesiam progressively extended to the feudal aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Urokinase activates macrophage PON2 gene transcription via the PI3K/ROS/MEK/SREBP-2 signalling cascade mediated by the PDGFR-β

Aims We have recently shown that urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) increases oxidative stress (OS), cholesterol biosynthesis, and paraoxonase 2 (PON2) expression in macrophages via binding to its receptor, the uPAR. Since PON2 is regulated by both OS and cholesterol content, we hypothesized that uPA elicits a cascade of signal transduction events shared by NADPH oxidase and cholesterol biosynthesis that culminates in PON2 gene expression. Cross-talk between Different Enhancer Elements during Mitogenic Induction of the Human Stromelysin-1 Gene

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) induces the expression of human stromelysin-1, a matrix metalloproteinase involved in tumor invasion and metastasis. Here it is shown that stromelysin-1 gene induction by PDGF depends on Ras and involves three previously identified promoter elements (the stromelysin-1 PDGF-responsive element (SPRE) site, the two head-to-head polyomavirus enhancer A-binding protein-3 (PEA3) sites, and the activator protein-1 (AP-1) binding site).
