An Evaluation of Fibrin(ogen) Determinants of Thromboelastography

2011

Abstract Abstract 2251 Thromboelastography (TEG) was used in ∼200 studies published in 2009, is mainly used for global blood coagulation assessment, and is thrombin and fibrinogen concentration-dependent. Reflecting the time course of fibrin polymerization, TEG measures lag time, rate, and maximum amplitude (MA) of clot stiffness, and is substantially enhanced by platelets. To identify more specific fibrin(ogen) determinants potentially relevant to interpretation we investigated MA under different TEG conditions. The procedure utilizes a polymethylmethacrylate (hydrophobic surface) cup and pin set, the cup oscillating through 4° 45' (6 cycles/minute). The pin (sensor) is suspended via a tor…

Mean platelet volume in arterial and venous thrombotic disorders

2020

Abstract The mean platelet volume (MPV) is an easy, rapid and inexpensive laboratory parameter which basically mirrors platelet size. Due to the essential role of platelets in hemostasis, many studies have assessed the MPV value in patients with arterial and venous thrombotic disorders. These have then been summarized in some interesting meta-analyses and recent studies that will be discussed in this narrative review. Taken together, the currently available evidence suggests that the MPV may be substantially increased in concomitance with acute episodes of coronary artery disease, venous thromboembolism, portal vein thrombosis, stroke, erectile dysfunction and preeclampsia. In many of these…

Platelet-rich fibrin for wound healing of palatal donor sites of free gingival grafts: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

2020

Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:22:28Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Background: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been referred to as a second-generation platelet concentrate, associated with improvements on the healing of palatal wounds followed by FGG harvesting. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the complete wound epithelialization and postoperative pain when PRF was used in palatal wounds following free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting. Material and Methods: PubMed (Medline), EMBASE and Scopus were searched by two independent individuals up to and including March 2020 in order to identify controlled and randomized cont…

The Role for Combined Antithrombotic Therapy with Platelet and Coagulation Inhibition After Lower Extremity Revascularization

2021

Evidence for antithrombotic treatment following lower extremity revascularization (LER) for peripheral artery disease (PAD) is limited, leading to weak and conflicting guideline recommendations and heterogeneous practice patterns. This variability in post-LER antithrombotic treatment raises quality-of-care issues that have long been under-studied. This Viewpoint reviews the most updated guidelines, currently-available evidence, and contemporary data about practice patterns and practitioner opinions in this area. Particular attention is paid to distinctions between antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulant therapy, and combination therapy in light of the recent VOYAGER-PAD (Vascular Outcomes Study…

Antithrombotic therapies in aortic and peripheral arterial diseases in 2021: a consensus document from the ESC working group on aorta and peripheral …

2021

AbstractThe aim of this collaborative document is to provide an update for clinicians on best antithrombotic strategies in patients with aortic and/or peripheral arterial diseases. Antithrombotic therapy is a pillar of optimal medical treatment for these patients at very high cardiovascular risk. While the number of trials on antithrombotic therapies in patients with aortic or peripheral arterial diseases is substantially smaller than for those with coronary artery disease, recent evidence deserves to be incorporated into clinical practice. In the absence of specific indications for chronic oral anticoagulation due to concomitant cardiovascular disease, a single antiplatelet agent is the ba…

A practical MRI-based reconstruction method for a new endocavitary and interstitial gynaecological template

2015

Purpose: There are perineal templates for interstitial implants such as MUPIT and Syed applicators. Their limitations are the intracavitary component deficit and the necessity to use computed tomography (CT) for treatment planning since both applicators are non-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatibles. To overcome these problems, a new template named Template Benidorm (TB) has been recently developed. Titanium needles are usually reconstructed based on their own artifacts, mainly in T1-weighted sequence, using the void on the tip as the needle tip position. Nevertheless, patient tissues surrounding the needles present heterogeneities that complicate the accurate identification of these …

Use of leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) in periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO): clinical effects on edema and pain

2015

Background Demand for shorter treatment time is common in orthodontic patients. Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) is a somewhat new surgical procedure which allows faster tooth movement via combining orthodontic forces with corticotomy and grafting of alveolar bone plates. Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) possess hard- and soft-tissue healing properties. Further, evidence of pain-inhibitory and anti-inflammatory potential is growing. Therefore, this study explores the feasibility, intra- and post-operative effects of using L-PRF in PAOO in terms of post-operative pain, inflammation, infection and post-orthodontic stability. Material and methods A pilot prosp…

Effects of nicotine receptor agonists on acetylcholine release from the isolated motor nerve, small intestine and trachea of rats and guinea-pigs

1992

The effects of nicotine receptor agonists on the release of [3H]acetylcholine from the phrenic nerve, the small intestine and the trachea were investigated to characterize neuronal nicotine receptors within the peripheral nervous system. Contraction of the indirectly-stimulated hemidiaphragm was recorded to investigate desensitization of the postsynaptic muscular nicotine receptors. Nicotine, cytisine, 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium and 2-(4-aminophenyl)-ethyl-trimethyl-ammoniumiodide caused a concentration-dependent (0.1-30 microM) increase in evoked [3H]acetylcholine release from the phrenic nerve, whereby bell-shaped concentration-response curves were obtained. The rank order of decre…

CARDIOVASCULAR RISK IN ESSENTIAL THROMBOCYTHEMIA AND POLYCYTHEMIA VERA: THROMBOTIC RISK AND SURVIVAL

2019

Thromboembolic and bleeding events pose a severe risk for patients with Polycythemia Vera (PV) and Essential Thrombocythemia (ET). Many factors can contribute to promoting the thrombotic event due to the interaction between platelets, leukocytes, and endothelium alterations. Moreover, a significant role can be played by cardiovascular risk factors (CV.R) such as cigarette smoking habits, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and dyslipidemia. In this study, we evaluated the impact that CV.R plays on thrombotic risk and survival in patients with PV and ET .

Efficacy and Safety of IQYMUNE®, a Ten Percent Intravenous Immunoglobulin in Adult Patients With Chronic, Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia

2018

Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) IQYMUNE® is a highly purified 10% IVIG that was assessed using the new stringent definition of response described in the revised guideline on the clinical investigation of IVIG. The efficacy and the safety of IQYMUNE® were investigated in adult patients with chronic primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Methods: In this phase III multinational, multicentre, prospective, uncontrolled, open-label, single-arm study, adult patients with a baseline platelet count < 30 × 10 9 /L were treated with IVIG 10% at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight administered over 2 consecutive days. The primary endpoint was Response over the study period and was defined accor…
