Electrophoresis of model colloidal spheres in low salt aqueous suspension
2004
We report on comprehensive measurements of the electrophoretic mobility μ of a highly charged spherical colloid in deionized or low salt aqueous suspensions, where fluid and crystalline order develops with increased packing fraction Φ. We propose the existence of a 'universal' shape of the μ(Φ) showing three distinct regimes: a logarithmic increase, a plateau and a logarithmic decrease. The position and the height of the plateau are found to be influenced by the particle surface properties and the electrolyte concentration. In particular, it starts once the counter-ion concentration becomes equal to the concentration of background electrolyte. This coincides only loosely with the range of Φ…
The oxidizing agent tertiary butyl hydroperoxide induces disturbances in spindle organization, c-meiosis, and aneuploidy in mouse oocytes
1996
It has been recently proposed that a concomitant generation of oxidative stress of oocytes with increasing maternal age may be a major factor responsible for the age-related increase in aneuploid conceptions. As a preliminary step in the testing of this hypothesis, we need to confirm that oxidative stress in itself can induce errors in chromosome segregation. In order to achieve this goal, germinal vesicle (GV)-stage mouse oocytes from unstimulated ICR and (C57BL x CBA) F1 hybrid female mice were matured in vitro for 9 h for metaphase I (MI) oocytes or 16 h for metaphase II (MII) oocytes in the presence of varying concentrations of the oxidizing agent tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide (tBH). MII…
Neuromuscular junction disassembly and muscle fatigue in mice lacking neurotrophin-4
2001
Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is produced by slow muscle fibers in an activity-dependent manner and promotes growth and remodeling of adult motorneuron innervation. However, both muscle fibers and motor neurons express NT-4 receptors, suggesting bidirectional NT-4 signaling at the neuromuscular junction. Mice lacking NT-4 displayed enlarged and fragmented neuromuscular junctions with disassembled postsynaptic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) clusters, reduced AChR binding, and acetylcholinesterase activity. Electromyographic responses, posttetanic potentiation, and action potential amplitude were also significantly reduced in muscle fibers from NT-4 knock-out mice. Slow-twitch soleus muscles from thes…
Role of the protein C receptor in cancer progression
2014
The hemostatic system plays pleiotropic roles in cancer progression by shaping the tumor microenvironment and metastatic niches through thrombin-dependent fibrin deposition and platelet activation. Expanding experimental evidence implicates coagulation protease receptors expressed by tumor cells as additional players that directly influence tumor biology. Pro-angiogenic G protein-coupled signaling of TF through protease activated receptor 2 and regulation of tumor cell and vascular integrins through ligation by alternative spliced TF are established pathways driving tumor progression. Our recent work shows that the endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR), a stem cell marker in hematopoietic, …
Polynitroxylated hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier: inhibition of free radical-induced microcirculatory dysfunction.
1999
Reactive oxygen species have been identified as key mediators of leukocyte/endothelial cell interaction under various pathological conditions and diseases such as ischemia/reperfusion injury, inflammation, and after exposure to cigarette smoke. Consequently, antioxidants have been shown to successfully prevent the sequelae of these conditions, ranging from tissue infarction to atherogenesis. In this study we investigated whether, via its established superoxide dismutase-like activity, a novel polynitroxyl hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (PNH), could affect the stimulation of leukocyte rolling and adhesion to endothelial cells in response to cigarette smoke. Using the dorsal skin fold chambe…
Lymphatic endothelial progenitors bud from the cardinal vein and intersomitic vessels in mammalian embryos.
2012
Abstract The lymphatic vasculature preserves tissue fluid balance by absorbing fluid and macromolecules and transporting them to the blood vessels for circulation. The stepwise process leading to the formation of the mammalian lymphatic vasculature starts by the expression of the gene Prox1 in a subpopulation of blood endothelial cells (BECs) on the cardinal vein (CV) at approximately E9.5. These Prox1-expressing lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) will exit the CV to form lymph sacs, primitive structures from which the entire lymphatic network is derived. Until now, no conclusive information was available regarding the cellular processes by which these LEC progenitors exit the CV without co…
The pleiotropic effects of antiplatelet therapies
2019
Percutaneous coronary intervention is the most often used method for coronary revascularization. Stenting restores blood perfusion to ischemic areas, but it also causes mechanical disruption of the atheromatous plaque and the nearby endothelium, stimulating the activation of platelets. In a similar way, platelets are activated by thrombin exposure in the setting of plaque rupture. The interaction between platelets, oxidative stress and inflammation is an important factor determining the extent and severity of vascular dysfunction observed in these settings. Platelets activated by the vessel trauma release inflammatory and mitogenic mediators into the vascular microenvironment, activating le…
Advanced models for smart multilayered plates based on Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem
2017
In the present work, families of equivalent singe layer and layer-wise models for the static and free vibrations analysis of magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates are developed. The models are defined in the framework of a unified formulation, which offers a systematic approach for generating refined plate theories through suitable expansions of the through-the-thickness components of the relevant fields, considering the expansion order as a free parameter. The key features of the developed formulation are: a) the condensation of the electric and magnetic description into the mechanical representation, based on the quasi-static electric-magnetic approximation, which allows to reduce t…
Energetic Sustainability Using Renewable Energies in the Mediterranean Sea
2016
The paper is focused on the analysis of the electrical energy sector in the Maltese islands, focusing on the employment of Renewable Energies in order to increase its energy independence. The main renewable source here proposed is wave energy: thanks to its strategic position, Malta will be able to generate electrical energy through the use of an innovative type of Wave Energy Converter (WEC) based on the prototype of linear generator designed and developed by the University of Palermo. This new technology will be able to cut down the electrical energy production from traditional power plants and, consequently, the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Wave energy source and off-shore photovoltai…
