BACKGROUND Leg extension power can be determined as the product of the force and velocity of movement. Its association with maximal walking speed was studied in 131 80- and 85-year-old men and women. METHODS Leg extension power was measured with the help of a sledge ergometer in a sitting position using a facilitated "jump test." The participant was attached by belts to a sliding chair on rails inclined at 12.6 degrees to the floor. The feet were placed on the force plate attached perpendicularly to the rails, and the knee angle was 90 degrees at the starting position. The purpose of this biomechanical study was to determine whether a multidirectional fixed-angle plate with locking screws or with locking pegs in the distal fragment would optimize fixation of Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) type A3 distal radius fractures.Eight pairs of fresh-frozen human distal radii were used. Abstract Purpose: We recently reported that anionic phospholipids, principally phosphatidylserine, become exposed on the external surface of vascular endothelial cells in tumors, probably in response to oxidative stresses present in the tumor microenvironment. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that a chimeric monoclonal antibody that binds phosphatidylserine could be labeled with radioactive arsenic isotopes and used for molecular imaging of solid tumors in rats. Abstract Oncogene activation promotes an intrinsic inflammatory pathway that is crucial for cancer development. Here, we have investigated the actual effect of the inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF) on the natural history of spontaneous mammary cancer in the HER2/neuT (NeuT) transgenic mouse model. Bone marrow transplantation from TNF knockout mice into NeuT recipients significantly impaired tumor growth, indicating that the source of TNF fostering tumor development was of bone marrow origin. Aberrant arrested in maturation neuromuscular junctions in centronuclear myopathy

Unusual ultrastructural changes of the nerve terminals have been found in an infant born with severe, fatal XLR form of centronuclear myopathy. Aberrant neuromuscular junctions in myotubes decorated by N-CAM were observed. The junction changes were manifested by simplification of postsynaptic membrane and paucity of secondary synaptic clefts. These resembles fetal neuromuscular junctions. The findings suggest that the expression of N-CAM by arrested myotubes may be promoted by abnormal nerve-muscle cell interactions, induced by motor endplate immaturity.
Diabetic foot ulcers: Retrospective comparative analysis from Sicily between two eras

Aim The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the incidence, management and mortality of DFU in Sicilian Type 2 diabetic patients hospitalized between two eras, i.e. 2008–2013 and 2014–2019. Methods We compared the two eras, era1: 2008–13, era2: 2014–19. In era 1, n = 149, and in era 2, n = 181 patients were retrospectively enrolled. Results In the population hospitalized for DFU in 2008–2013, 59.1% of males and 40.9% of females died, whilst in 2014–2019 65.9% of males and 34.1% of females died.
