Modification of human platelet adhesion on biomaterial surfaces by protein preadsorption under static and flow conditions.

2004

Biomaterial-induced thrombosis remains one of the main complications of vascular implant devices. Preadsorbed proteins on the biomaterial/blood interface will modify the adhesion and activation of platelets (PTLs) during the initial contact-phase. Our results clearly show that PTL-adherence on biomaterials is influenced not only by protein preadsorption, but also by flow conditions. The covalent coating of TCPS and glass by phosphorylcholine (PC) induces a significant decrease of PTL adhesion but leads to a slight, but nevertheless significant activation of PTL, which was detected by the induction of P-selectin expression using FACS analysis. Methodologically, the visualization of PTL adhes…

One-step electrochemical synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of CdSe nanotubes

2013

Abstract Stoichiometric CdSe nanotubes (NTs) with a length of ∼700 nm have been successfully grown by one-step electrochemical technique into anodic alumina membranes. Cyclovoltammetric method has been performed using porous anodic alumina as template electrode and an electrochemical bath containing Cd 2+ ions and SeO 2 . The as-prepared NTs have been identified as face-centred-cubic CdSe by XRD, while micro-Raman analysis reveals the typical peaks of nanostructured CdSe. The stoichiometric deposition of CdSe NTs formation is suggested by EDX analysis, with an average atomic percentage of Cd:Se of ∼0.93. Photoelectrochemical measurements reveal that CdSe NTs are photoactive materials with d…

Improvement of the electrochemical behaviour of Zn-electroplated steel using regenerated Cr(III) passivation baths

2014

[EN] Conversion coatings based on trivalent chromium are more sensitive to the presence of zinc and iron impurities than the chromate formulations. This fact contributes to a decrease in the quality of passivation and to the generation of a significant amount of hazardous liquid waste. Recently, a new eco-innovative process based on Emulsion Pertraction Technology (EPT) is being implemented at industrial scale for selectively removing Zn and Fe from spent passivation baths in order to enhance the lifetime of the Cr (III) baths. In this study, the effect of Zn and Fe removal on the electrochemical behaviour of Zn-electroplated steel samples was evaluated by means of polarisation curves and e…

Nonlocal model for a magneto-electro-elastic nanoplate

2013

A mathematical model based on nonlocal third-order shear deformation plate theory has been developed to evaluate the mechanical and electromagnetic behavior of magneto-electro-elastic nanoplates. Two types of magneto-electro-elastic composites have been considered, all of them combination of Barium Titanate sheets, that represents the piezoelectric phase, and Cobalt Ferrite, that is the piezomagnetic component. Setting magneto-electric boundary conditions on each laminate, it has been possible to extrapolate and to analyze free vibrations frequencies for all considered plates, allowing to do objective assessments on what factors influence laminate modes and, especially, how these vary in th…

High-performance of PbO2 nanowire electrodes for lead-acid battery

2014

Abstract PbO2 nanowires were obtained by template electrodeposition in polycarbonate membranes and tested as positive electrode for lead-acid battery. Nanowires were grown on the same material acting as current collector that was electrodeposited too. The nanostructured electrodes were assembled in a zero-gap configuration using commercial negative plate and separator. Cell performance was tested by galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles in a 5 M H2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. PbO2 nanostructured electrodes were able to deliver at 1C rate an almost constant capacity of about 190 mAh g−1 (85% of active material utilization), close to the theoretical value (224 mAh g−1). The nanowire array provide…

Ni alloy nanowires as high efficiency electrode materials for alkaline electrolysers

2021

Abstract The fabrication and characterization of nickel-alloy electrodes for alkaline electrolysers is reported. Three different alloys (Ni–Co, Ni–Zn and Ni–W) at different composition were studied in order to determine the optimum condition. Nanostructured electrodes were obtained by template electrodeposition into a nanoporous membrane, starting from aqueous solution containing the two elements of the alloy at different concentrations. Composition of alloys can be tuned by electrolyte composition and also depends on the difference of the redox potential of elements and on the presence of complexing agents in deposition bath. Electrochemical and electrocatalytic tests, aimed at establishin…

Photoelectrochemical characterization of Cu2O-nanowire arrays electrodeposited into anodic alumina membranes

2007

Perfectly aligned nanowire arrays of polycrystalline Cu2O were grown by template-pulsed electrodeposition from a cupric acetate-sodium acetate bath into anodic alumina membranes (AAM). The photoelectrochemical behavior of arrays with different nanowire lengths (0.5 mu m and 2 mu m) was investigated in neutral solution, and the results compared to those pertaining to Cu2O films grown with the same procedure. Although all samples displayed the same indirect bandgap (similar to 1.9 eV), differences were observed both in photocurrent intensity and sign. The latter changed with potential and wavelength in different ways for nanowires and films, revealing a different defect concentration in the t…

Periodic nanoscale patterning of polyelectrolytes over square centimeter areas using block copolymer templates

2016

© The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016. Nano-patterned materials are beneficial for applications such as solar cells, opto-electronics, and sensing owing to their periodic structure and high interfacial area. Here, we present a non-lithographic approach for assembling polyelectrolytes into periodic nanoscale patterns over cm2-scale areas. Chemically modified block copolymer thin films featuring alternating charged and neutral domains are used as patterned substrates for electrostatic self-assembly. In-depth characterization of the deposition process using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, including the state-of-the-art scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), reveals both the sel…

Bottom-up realization and electrical characterization of a graphene-based device.

2016

We propose a bottom-up procedure to fabricate an easy-to-engineer graphene-based device, consisting of a microstrip-like circuit where few-layer graphene nanoplatelets are used to contact two copper electrodes. The graphene nanoplatelets are obtained by the microwave irradiation of intercalated graphite, i.e., an environmentally friendly, fast and low-cost procedure. The contact is created by a bottom-up process, driven by the application of a DC electrical field in the gap between the electrodes, yielding the formation of a graphene carpet. The electrical resistance of the device has been measured as a function of the gap length and device temperature. The possible use of this device as a …

Rapid One-Step Fabrication of Graphene Oxide-Decorated Polycaprolactone Three-Dimensional Templates for Water Treatment

2020

Coating of flexible substrates is crucial to prepare versatile, multifunctional materials. However, exploration of effective fabrication approaches is still a challenging issue, because the pathways generally proposed require time-consuming, multistep protocols. Here, we developed a one-pot process for decorating either pearl necklace-like or fibrous fluffy-like structures of polycaprolactone (PCL) with graphene oxide (GO) skin. PCL solutions were dry jet-wet electrosprayed or electrospun into a stirred liquid collector constituted by ethanol-containing GO nanoparticles. The stirred liquid collector enables the formation of 3D-structures, whose microarchitecture can be designed by controlli…
