Subplate Cells: Amplifiers of Neuronal Activity in the Developing Cerebral Cortex
2009
Due to their unique structural and functional properties, subplate cells are ideally suited to function as important amplifying units within the developing neocortical circuit. Subplate neurons have extensive dendritic and axonal ramifications and relatively mature functional properties, i.e. their action potential firing can exceed frequencies of 40 Hz. At earliest stages of corticogenesis subplate cells receive functional synaptic inputs from the thalamus and from other cortical and non-cortical sources. Glutamatergic and depolarizing GABAergic inputs arise from cortical neurons and neuromodulatory inputs arise from the basal forebrain and other sources. Activation of postsynaptic metabot…
NONLOCAL LAYER-WISE ADVANCED THEORIES FOR LAMINATED PLATES
2019
Eringen nonlocal layer-wise models for the analysis of multilayered plates are formulated in the framework of the Carrera Unified Formulation and the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT). The use of the layer-wise approach and RMVT ensures the fulfilment of the transverse stress equilibrium at the layers’ interfaces and allows the analysis of plates with layers exhibiting different characteristic lengths in their nonlocal behaviour. A Navier solution has been implemented and tested for the static bending of rectangular simply-supported plates. The obtained results favourably compare against available three-dimensional analytic results and demonstrate the features of the proposed theori…

Bases for the synthesis of nanoparticulated silicas with bimodal hierarchical porosity
2006
Porous silicas with pore sizes at two length scales (meso and large meso/macroporous) have been prepared through a one-pot surfactant assisted procedure by using a simple template agent and starting from silicon atrane complexes as hydrolytic inorganic precursors. The special organization of these bimodal porous silicas can be related to the nanometric character of their constituent mesoporous particles. Whereas the small intra-particle mesopore system is generated by the templating effect of the surfactant, the large pore system is defined by inter-particle voids. We have studied the effect of different procedural parameters on the small pore system and also on the nucleation and growth of…

New pathways of increased cardiovascular risk in depression: a pilot study on the association of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein with pro-atheros…
2013
Abstract Background An elevation of inflammatory markers such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) can be found in patients with depressive disorders. Inflammatory processes are known to influence atherosclerosis and might also mediate the link between depression and diabetes. The present study aimed at comparing hs-CRP and its relationship with atherogenic platelet markers in patients with type 2 diabetes (TD2) and/or newly diagnosed major depression (MD). Methods Hs-CRP concentrations in 24 patients with TD2, 21 patients with MD (diagnosed according to ICD-10 and DSM-IV), 19 patients with TD2 and comorbid MD, and 25 healthy controls were compared using analysis of variance. The…
Plerixafor is effective and safe for stem cell mobilization in heavily pretreated germ cell tumor patients.
2010
Up to 10% of germ cell tumor patients require salvage high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell support, achieving cure rates in the range of 10-60%. Stem cell mobilization may be difficult in these patients because of multiple lines of treatment known to seriously hamper stem cell recovery. Plerixafor significantly enhances the success of the CD34+ cell harvest, even in cases where prior mobilization attempts have failed. Six germ cell tumor patients provided informed consent and were included in the compassionate use program. All patients were heavily pretreated, with a median of 3.5 prior lines of therapy. All failed prior mobilization with G-CSF in combination with chemotherapy. Five patien…
A phase I/II multicentric trial of gemcitabine and epirubicin in patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma
2006
Potential synergistic interaction between gemcitabine (GEM) and epirubicin (EPI) in pancreatic cancer have been described previously. The maximum-tolerated dose in this trial was GEM 1000 mg m(-2) and EPI 45 mg m(-2). Median time to progression was 5.1 months and median survival time 7.4 months. This combination appears well tolerated and shows promising clinical activity.
Thrombin generation - a potentially useful biomarker of thrombotic risk in Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms.
2017
The diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia and polycythemia vera is often made during a thrombotic event which can be serious. Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia patients have an increased thrombotic risk. This is assessed using various scoring systems but these are far from ideal and individual risk. The currend trend to personalised medicine requires finding the most useful thrombotic risk biomarker in these patients. Routine tests for coagulation do not take account of both pro- and anti-coagulant factors which is why these tests are not useful in patients with Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. Thrombin generation reflects more accurately the bal…
