Outcome of enzyme replacement therapy in patients with Gaucher disease type I. The Romanian experience

2007

This study reports the first evaluation of therapeutic response in Romanian patients with Gaucher disease type I, after therapy with Cerezyme recently became available in our country.24 patients (11-50 years) received Cerezyme 20-60 U/kg every two weeks for at least 18 months. Haemoglobin, platelet count, volume of the liver and spleen, plasma chitotriosidase and the severity score were assessed every 6 months; skeletal radiography and osteodensitometry were also monitored.Eleven patients were splenectomized before start of therapy. Eight patients had anaemia (mean haemoglobin 9.4 g/dl) and 14 patients, of whom 13 were without splenectomy, had thrombocytopenia (mean 65,692/mm3). Haemoglobin…

Effect of interleukin-3 pretreatment on granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor induced mobilization of circulating haemopoietic progenitor …

1995

Recombinant human colony stimulating factors (CSFs) as single agents are increasingly used for mobilizing peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPCs) for stem cell transplantation. We have shown in rhesus monkeys that interleukin-3 (IL-3) pretreatment markedly potentiated the increase in PBPC numbers of subsequent administration of granulocyte/macrophage-CSF (GM-CSF). Here we studied the effect of IL-3 pretreatment on GM-CSF-induced mobilization of PB progenitors in patients who were potential candidates for autologous stem cell transplantation (n = 16). Patients were treated with GM-CSF at a dose of 5 micrograms/kg/d for 5 d and after a treatment free interval received another cycle of GM-CS…

CT enterography as a powerful tool for the evaluation of inflammatory activity in Crohn’s disease: relationship of CT findings with CDAI and acute-ph…

2014

Few studies have correlated computed tomography enterography (CTE) findings with Crohn’s disease (CD) clinical and biochemical activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate correlations between CTE findings with CD activity. The CTE datasets from 62 patients were retrospectively reviewed for different parameters: bowel wall thickening and hyperenhancement, mesenteric alterations, abdominal free fluid and complications related to the disease (fistulas, strictures, abscesses). Activity was assessed using the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) and some biochemical markers (C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, alpha 2-globulins, fibrinogen, platelets, haemoglobin). Correlati…

Effects of mud-pack treatment on plasma cytokine and soluble adhesion molecule levels in healthy volunteers

2001

Abstract Background : The suggested hypothesis of a direct anti-inflammatory property of mud-pack treatment has led us to speculate that its action on the cytokine network might counteract the heat-stress-related effects on platelet and endothelial cell function often reported following hot-spring baths. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effects of a cycle of 12 daily mud-pack treatments on bio-humoral markers of inflammation, as well as on markers of in vivo platelet and/or endothelial cell activation, in plasma samples obtained from healthy volunteers. Methods : Blood samples were obtained before ( T 0 ), at the end of the first treatment ( T 1 ) and after a cyc…

RESIST-HCV Criteria to Monitor Progression of Low-Risk Esophageal Varices in Patients With Compensated Cirrhosis After HCV Eradication: The SIMPLE St…

2022

Noninvasive criteria to predict the progression of low-risk esophageal varices (EV) in patients with compensated hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis after sustained virological response (SVR) by direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are lacking. Our aim was to assess the diagnostic performance of Rete Sicilia Selezione Terapia-HCV (RESIST-HCV) criteria for EV progression compared with elastography-based criteria (Baveno VI, Expanded Baveno VI, and Baveno VII-HCV criteria). All consecutive patients observed at 3 referral centers with compensated HCV cirrhosis with or without F1 EV who achieved sustained virological response by DAAs were classified at last esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) as RESIST-H…

Modulation of platelet activation and initial cytokine release by alloplastic bone substitute materials.

2010

Objectives: Platelet-derived cytokines play a crucial role in tissue regeneration. In regenerative dental medicine, bone substitute materials (BSM) are widely used. However, initial interactions of BSM and platelets are still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of platelet activation and subsequent initial cytokine release by different commercial alloplastic BSM. Material and methods: Eight commercial BSM of different origins and chemical compositions (tricalcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass: SiO2 and mixtures) were incubated with a platelet concentrate (platelet-rich plasma, PRP) of three healthy volunteers at room temperature for 15 min. Platelet cou…

High-throughput elucidation of thrombus formation reveals sources of platelet function variability

2019

In combination with microspotting, whole-blood microfluidics can provide high-throughput information on multiple platelet functions in thrombus formation. Based on assessment of the inter-and intra-subject variability in parameters of microspot-based thrombus formation, we aimed to determine the platelet factors contributing to this variation. Blood samples from 94 genotyped healthy subjects were analyzed for conventional platelet phenotyping: i.e. hematologic parameters, platelet glycoprotein (GP) expression levels and activation markers (24 parameters). Furthermore, platelets were activated by ADP, CRP-XL or TRAP. Parallel samples were investigated for whole-blood thrombus formation (6 mi…

Laboratory parameters in centenarians of Italian ancestry

2008

Studies aimed at collecting reference parameters for haematochemical analysis in the elderly are scarce and for the oldest old subjects even more rare. In order to establish the reference values for the most common laboratory text in long living individuals, we measured haematochemical parameters in >100 years old subjects and in aged subjects as control. Six hundred and two centenarians accepted to be enrolled in the study. A case history containing the complete anamnesis, clinical examinations, evaluation of the clinical cognitive and functional tests, was prepared for each centenarian. Blood samples from 120 > 100 years old subjects free of chronic or acute Illness (i.e. Alzheimer’s dise…
