Strange bedfellows

2007

Feminist debates on pornography have relied on articulations of affect, from anti-pornography rhetoric of grief, anger and disgust to anti-anti-pornography claims to enjoyment and pleasure. The complexity of reading, the interpenetration of affect and analysis, experience and interpretation tend to become effaced in arguments both for and against pornography. This article argues for the necessity of moving beyond the affective range of disgust versus pleasure in feminist studies of pornography. Drawing on theorizations of reading and affect, particularly Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s discussion of ‘paranoid’ and ‘reparative’ reading, it investigates the possibilities of analysing commercial emai…

2020

Since the beginning of the 20th century, electroencephalography (EEG) has been used in a wide variety of applications, both for medical needs and for the study of various cerebral processes. With the rapid development of the technique, more and more precise and advanced tools have emerged for research purposes. However, the main constraints of these devices have often been the high price and, for some devices the low transportability and the long set-up time. Nevertheless, a broad range of wireless EEG devices have emerged on the market without these constraints, but with a lower signal quality. The development of EEG recording on multiple participants simultaneously, and new technological …

Conceptions of happiness and its relationship with subjective well-being: A study through Natural Semantic Networks

2018

Personal Reflections on Dirk Jan Struik By Joseph W. Dauben

2018

Dirk Jan Struik, who taught for many years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and died on 21 October 2000 at the age of 106, was a distinguished mathematician and influential teacher. He was also widely known as a leading Marxist scholar and social activist. His early work on vector and tensor analysis, undertaken together with Jan Arnoldus Schouten, helped impart new mathematical techniques needed to master Einstein’s general theory of relativity. This collaboration lasted for over 20 years, but by the end of the 1930s, Struik came to realize that the heyday of the Ricci calculus had passed. After the Second World War, having now entered his 50s, he gave up mathematical research …

Adding sensor-free intention-based affective support to an Intelligent Tutoring System

2017

Abstract Emotional factors considerably influence learning and academic performance. In this paper, we validate the hypothesis that learning platforms can adjust their response to have an effect on the learner’s pleasure, arousal and/or dominance, without using a specific emotion detection system during operation. To this end, we have enriched an existing Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) by designing a module that is able to regulate the level of help provided to maximize valence, arousal or autonomy as desired. The design of this module followed a two-stage methodology. In the first stage, the ITS was adapted to collect data from several groups of students in primary education, by providi…

Lavitalamorte o la genesi dell'aporia

2021

The author finds the genesis of her concept of aporia in the Derrida Seminar of the 1970s on La vie la mort. The essay problematizes the co-belonging between life and death in Plato's Gorgias and starting from this datum compares Derrida's position with the dialectical-metaphysical one.

Il X libro dell'Etica Nicomachea. Un nuovo/antico modo di abitare l'universo?

2022

This paper aims to show the primacy of theoretical sciences and virtues in the Aristotelian Corpus. As Aristotle says, definitions are more exhaustive and precise in the theoretical rather than in the practical writings. In order to show this, I compare the definition of theoretical and practical sciences in Metaph. E 1 and Eth. Nic. VI, 2 and the definition of ‘soul’ in De an. B 1 and Eth. Nic. A 13 and Z 2. I then consider the nature of theoretical pleasures in Eth. Nic. X, 7, and show, by comparison with Part. an I, 5, that these pleasures can be identified with those offered by the study of nature. Thus, one can live a satisfying life and be a good citizen of the polis without being a t…
