Revisiting the role of embedding in Systemic Functional Linguistics : Construing depth in “big texts”

2021

This paper is concerned with exploring the role of embedded genres in expanding the meaning potential of long texts, focusing especially on complex tertiary assignments. A significant body of work has evolved in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) on modelling “big texts” as macrogenres since Martin (1994: 29) posed the question how texts “get bigger than a page”. However, based on detailed genre analyses of high-scoring undergraduate business country reports, this paper illustrates that not all big texts are macrogenres made up of elemental genre complexes. Analogising from clause grammar, it will show that these texts unfold through multiple layers of embedded genres in their generic st…

Interlacing multiplexing techniques for optical morphological correlation

2006

We propose a novel approach to implement nonlinear morphological correlation. Previous implementation was based on a time sequential approach that consists on displaying different binary image decomposition in a joint transform correlator adding each joint power spectra sequentially. A second Fourier transformation of the sum of joint power spectra gives the correlation output. In this paper, we propose to interlace the different binary images into one single distribution. Then, we introduce the distribution in a conventional joint transform correlator. The correlation output gives the morphological correlation at a specific location. The advantage is important considering that no sequentia…

An Innovative Coupling Solution for Power Line Communication in MV Electrical Networks

2019

One of the main problems in the diffusion of power line communication (PLC) in medium voltage (MV) networks is the need of a dedicated PLC coupler to be installed all over the network. To avoid this problem, the authors have studied, prototyped and patented an innovative PLC coupling solution which uses electrical elements embedded in most of the switchgears already installed in MV networks, i.e. the capacitive dividers of the voltage detecting systems (VDS). The new solution prototype is described in this paper, highlighting the advantages in terms of a significant reduction of both direct costs of equipment and infrastructures and indirect costs of installation and service interruption. Customized WO3 nanoplatelets as visible-light photoelectrocatalyst for the degradation of a recalcitrant model organic compound (methyl orange)

2018

[EN] WO3 nanoplatelets have been synthesized by electrochemical anodization in acidic electrolytes containing two different complexing agents: fluorides and hydrogen peroxide. The influence of the morphology and size of these nanoplatelets on their photoelectrocatalytic performance has been studied following the degradation of a model organic recalcitrant compound, such as methyl orange (MO). The effect of several supporting electrolytes on this photodegradation process has also been checked. The best MO decoloration was observed for nanoplatelets fabricated in the presence of low H2O2 concentrations, whose distribution and small size made them expose a very high surface area to the problem…

Analysis of duplexing modes in the IEEE 802.16 wireless system

2010

The IEEE 802.16 standard defines two main duplexing modes: Time Division Duplexing (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD). The FDD can be divided further into Full-FDD (F-FDD) and Half-FDD (H-FDD). F-FDD requires full duplexing support from subscriber stations and works with two frequency bands. TDD operates a single frequency band, but it does not need full-duplexing support. H-FDD is a combination of these: it works with two frequency bands and does not require full-duplexing support. The cost of this is a more complicated scheduling and added overhead. Still, H-FDD might be the only possible duplexing mode in some occasions. In this paper, these duplexing modes are compared and the…

Sparsity-aware narrowband interference mitigation and subcarriers selection in OFDM-based cognitive radio networks

2016

In this paper, the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing overlay cognitive radio network with subcarrier selection schemes is investigated. We propose three subcarrier selection techniques that reduce the level of interference at the primary base station based on collected channel state information from the different network nodes. Approximated outage probability expressions are also derived and verified by simulations for the different studied techniques. In addition, we propose and investigate a new approach for asynchronous narrowband interference (NBI) estimation and mitigation in cognitive radio networks. The proposed approach does not require prior knowledge of …

Robustness of 40 Gb/s ASK modulation formats in the practical system infrastructure.

2006

In this work, we analyzed by means of numerical and laboratory experiments the resilience of 40 Gb/s amplitude shift keying modulation formats to transmission impairments in standard single-mode fiber lines as well as to optical filtering introduced by the optical add/drop multiplexer cascade. Our study is a pre-requisite to assess the implementation of cost-effective 40 Gb/s modulation technology in next generation high bit-rate robust optical transport networks. © 2006 Optical Society of America.

Designing Precoding and Receive Matrices for Interference Alignment in MIMO Interference Channels

2017

Interference is a key bottleneck in wireless communication systems. Interference alignment is a management technique that align interference from other transmitters in the least possibly dimension subspace at each receiver and provides the remaining dimensions for free interference signal. An uncoordinated interference is an example of interference which cannot be aligned coordinately with interference from coordinated part; consequently, the performance of interference alignment approaches are degraded. In this paper, we propose a rank minimization method to enhance the performance of interference alignment in the presence of uncoordinated interference sources. Firstly, to obtain higher mu…
