This article seeks to answer the question, 'What is the value of plurilingualism'? by first of all exploring some different terms from Finnish and English that suggest different ways of understanding the world. The article then goes on to outline the importance of mother tongues as a way of rooting a child into a culture, whilst plurilingualism provides the child with different ways of understanding the world. The second half of the article uses a story to explore the challenges of sharing different understandings with others and outlines how these ideas can be introduced to children. nonPeerReviewed

Policies and professional development which focusses on pedagogical skills, beliefs, and agency are essential to ensure the sustainability of multilingual teaching approaches. This chapter begins with an overview of research studies on language policies, teacher agency and beliefs with a focus on multilingual settings. The intertwining of policy and teaching practice is then illustrated by means of the Finnish case, demonstrating how recent ECEC policies advocating diversity and plurilingualism have gradually changed teacher beliefs. On Migration and Illiteracy—Dealing With Texts in L2 Italian Initial-Literacy Classes

Acquiring the language spoken in the host country is crucial for social inclusion of migrants. From this perspective, illiteracy represents a social problem since it has repercussions on second-language acquisition/learning process. In order to investigate the role of illiteracy in L2 Italian acquisition, the paper aims at analyzing the oral productions of L2 Italian learners with equal L1 but a different level of education, i.e., low educated vs. non-educated.
