Rapid prototyping for micro-engineering and microfluidic applications: Recycled pmma, a sustainable substrate material

2018

Poly(methylmethacrylate), PMMA, is one of the most commonly used thermoplastics for the manufacture of micromechanical and microfluidic devices, due to its optical transparency, rigid mechanical properties, low cost and good workability in conjunction with its rapid prototyping and mass manufacturing. Recent advances in the rapid-prototyping fields have allowed the production of precise features compatible with microfluidic structures and accelerated the conversion process from bench-side to mass market. For example, to address the need for fast design cycles using material compatible with mass manufacturing, we have developed an ultrafast prototyping technique for the manufacture of multil…

Effect of preparation method on the properties of poly(methyl methacrylate)/mesoporous silica composites

2019

The preparation method of a polymer composite and the filler loading are amongst the factors that influence the properties of the final composites. This article studies the effect of these factors on the thermal stability and thermal degradation kinetics of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/mesoporous silica (MCM-41) composites filled with small amounts of MCM-41. The PMMA/MCM-41 composites were prepared through in situ polymerisation and melt mixing methods, with MCM-41 loadings of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%. The presence of MCM-41 increased the thermal stability of PMMA/MCM-41 composites prepared by melt mixing, but in the case of the in situ polymerised samples, the MCM-41 accelerated the deg…

The effect of silica nanoparticles on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of PMMA

2012

Abstract Silica–PMMA nanocomposites with different silica quantities were prepared by a melt compounding method. The effect of silica amount, in the range 1–5 wt.%, on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of PMMA was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13 C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 13 C{ 1 H} CP-MAS NMR) and measures of proton spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame ( T 1 ρ ( H )), in the laboratory frame ( T 1 ( H )) a…

Controlling dielectrical properties of polymer blends through defined PEDOT nanostructures

2016

[EN] The paper reports the crucial role of the morphology of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanostructures on the thermal and dielectric properties of polymer blends prepared thereof. PEDOT nanostructures with two different morphologies (nanoparticles and nanowires) were synthesized. The size for the nanoparticles was in the range 10 40 nm and the diameter of the nanowires was of ca. 200 nm. These nanostructures were blended with an insulating polymer matrix, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), to evaluate the dielectrical properties of the materials. The results of broadband dielèctric spectroscopy showed a strong correlation between the morphology of the nanostructure and the impr…

Photochemical synthesis of pyrene perfluoroalkyl derivatives and their embedding in a polymethylmethacrylate matrix: a spectroscopic and structural s…

2014

A photochemical, alternative and eco-compatible approach to perfluoroalkyl derivatives of pyrene is presented. The perfluoroalkyl chain is regiospecifically introduced at the 1 position of pyrene. The synthesized products have been embedded in a polymethylmethacrylate matrix by photocuring at 365 nm. Both the photochemical reactions can be considered a “green tool” for the synthetic chemist in order to obtain materials with prospective optoelectronic applications. The so-obtained composites have been the object of a study by UV and fluorescence spectroscopy in order to explore their luminescence properties. The small angle X-ray scattering and the transmission electron microscopy techniques…

HYBRID WHITE LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES: STUDY AND FABRICATION OF THIN-FILM AND NANOWIRE-BASED DEVICES

Frequency-Downconversion Stability of PMMA Coatings in Hybrid White Light-Emitting Diodes

2015

We report on the properties of a poly(methyl methacrylate)-based coating used as a host for an organic dye in hybrid white light-emitting diodes. The device is composed by a pump source, which is a standard inorganic GaN/InGaN blue light-emitting diode (LED) emitting at around 450 nm, and a spin-coated conversion layer making use of Lumogen® F Yellow 083. Under prolonged irradiation, the coating exhibits significant bleaching, thus degrading the color rendering performance of the LED. We present experimental results that confirm that the local temperature rise of the operating diode does not affect the conversion layer. It is also proven that, during the test, the photostability of the orga…

Influence of MeV H+ ion beam flux on cross-linking and blister formation in PMMA resist

2012

In soft lithography, a pattern is produced in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer by casting from a master mould. The mould can be made of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) resist by utilising either its positive or negative tone induced by an ion beam. Here we have investigated the irradiation conditions for achieving complete cross-linking and absence of blister formation in PMMA so that its negative characteristic can be used in making master moulds. PMMA thin films approximately 9 µm thick on Si were deposited by spin coating. The 2-MeV H+ ion beam was generated using a 1.7-MV tandem Tandetron accelerator. The beam was collimated to a 500×500 µm2 cross section using programmable proxi…

PMMA-titania nanocomposites: Properties and thermal degradation behavior

2012

Titania nanoparticles were prepared using a solegel method and calcination at 200 and 600 C in order to obtain anatase and rutile phases, respectively. The obtained powders were used to prepare PMMAe titania nanocomposites by a melt compounding method. The effect of the crystalline phase and the amount of titania, in the range 1e5 wt.%, on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of PMMA was investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 13 C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 13 C{ 1 H}CP-MAS NMR), including the measurement of proton spinelattice relaxation time in t…
