AbstractHybridisation in the wild between closely related species is a common mechanism of speciation in the plant kingdom and, in particular, in the grass family. Here we explore the potential for natural hybridisation in Stipa (one of the largest genera in Poaceae) between genetically distant species at their distribution edges in Mountains of Central Asia using integrative taxonomy. Our research highlights the applicability of classical morphological and genome reduction approaches in studies on wild plant species. The effect of external applications of gibberellins (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) on the growth, carbohydrate content, and net photosynthesis of heavy metal-stressed rice plants (Oryza sativa cv. Bahia) was investigated. Treatment with cadmium (0.1 mm) and nickel (0.5 mm) inhibited rice growth and stimulated carbohydrate accumulation, especially in seeds from which seedlings were developing, stems, and first leaves. The addition of GA3 (14 μm) to the rice culture solution together with Cd or Ni partially reversed the effects of heavy metals, stimulating growth as well as mobilization of carbohydrate reserves in seeds from which seedlings had developed. High neutral metallocarboxypeptidase activity (EC 3.4.17) has earlier been detected in young seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa L.) using benzyloxycarbonyl-L-phenylalanyl-L-alanine (Z-Phe-Ala) as substrate at pH 7. This finding was confirmed, and it was observed that the activity could be assayed with higher specificity and sensitivity by using Z-Gly-Ala or Z-Gly-Phe as substrate at pH 6.5–7. No corresponding activity was detected in seedlings of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya), oats (Avena sativa L.) or maize (Zea mays L.). Phenotypic characterization of the progenies of rice plants derived from cryopreserved calli

The progenies of rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) differentiated from calli that had been cryopreserved and from control (non-cryopreserved) calli were used to study the influence of selection pressure during cryopreservation. The phenotypic evaluation of these progenies was based mainly on the response of seedlings and calli to freezing stress and on the characterization of protoplast and cell populations by flow cytometric analyses. The patterns of response to freezing stress, as well as the variations in some morphological and physiological cell parameters, were unrelated to the origin (cryopreserved or control calli) of the parental plants.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soils of the Moscow region: Concentrations and small-scale distribution along an urban–rural transect

In soils of the Moscow region, we examined PCB concentrations in bulk samples and aggregate fractions. Topsoils under grassland and forest at five locations along a southeast-bound transect from Moscow and at a northeastern background location (grassland only) were analysed. We collected aggregates1 cm and fractionated them into interior and exterior portions and also analysed the remaining soil without the aggregates1 cm. The concentrations of the sum of 17 PCBs (sigma17PCBs) in 35 bulk soil samples ranged from 3.1 to 42 microg kg(-1). This was 48-61% of the sigma33PCBs determined in 23 selected samples. Plant dehydration is commonly caused by some adverse environmental conditions such as salinity, drought and freezing. As the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is involved in responses to water stress, we studied its putative relationship with the degree of tolerance to these abiotic stresses. For this purpose we used cell lines that had been established from mature embryos of rice (Oryza sativa L, cvs. Bahia and Bomba), and selected by their high (L-T) or low (L-S) levels of tolerance to each type of stress. The growth response of wheat (Triticum aest. L.) and mustard seedlings (Sinapis alba L.) treated with 10(-6) mol · l(-1) brassinosteroid (BR) foliar spray was measured. BR-treatment resulted in a general promotion of plant growth. We found the accumulation of photosynthates to be stimulated in the treated plants, as indicated by enhanced fresh and dry weights of leaves and shoots. BR also promoted the synthesis of soluble proteins and soluble reducing sugars, whereas the chlorophyll content was hardly affected. Abstract Defoliation of plants is known to have effects on soil organisms and nutrient availability in grassland communities, but few studies have examined whether changes in soil attributes can further feed back to plant growth and plant nutrient content. To examine defoliation-induced soil feedbacks, we established replicated miniecosystems with a grass Phleum pratense , defoliated half of the systems, collected soil from both defoliated and non-defoliated systems and planted new seedlings into each soil. Abstract A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the use of red mud, a by-product of the alumina industry, as a soil amendment on highly contaminated soils in the vicinity of a former Pb–Zn smelter in Copșa Mica (Romania).
