Creativity and Aesthetic Experience: The Problem of the Possibility of Beauty and Sensitiveness
2004
1. CREATIVITY, POETICS AND AESTHETICS Creativity may be regarded as one of the most complicated primary categories of aesthetics, and one that is most closely connected with such traditional aesthetic categories as beauty, for instance. The fulfilment of creative work is most visible in a work of art and refers to aesthetics as a sphere of expression/manifestation. Any discussion between an artist and an art philosopher or an art critic turns into a contention of a sort concerning the question of what comes first – manifestation or perception and evaluation. The view that creative work is feasible in any sphere of cultural activity as well as in science and technology, used to predominate i…
Listening to the Literary: On the Novelistic Poetics of the Podcast
2020
In comparing the 300-year-old form of the novel and the more recent one of the podcast, Patrick Gill contends that there are indeed parallels between the two. In concentrating on the central ideas of scope, focus, affect, and narration, the essay argues that both the novel and the podcast exploit similar affordances to make their consumers feel actively engaged and emotionally involved in the media experience. Gill then analyses in how far the emphasis placed on these parallels by cultural commentators and podcast producers alike is due to essential similarities and in how far it derives from a desire to use the idea of the novel as a shorthand for an artefact that is somehow deemed more va…

The Relation of the Figurativeness to the Avant-Gardism in Pentti Saarikoski’s Political Lyrics of the 1960’s In Saarikoski’s political poems, there are two things combined: figurativeness which is the traditional medium of poetry, and political radicalism. This combination is part of Saarikoski’s “political poetics”. Not much academic research has been carried out about Saarikoski’s lyrics, but it’s been studied earlier by for example Janna Kantola and H. K. Riikonen. In Saarikoski’s political-regarded works of the 1960’s, the most avant-garde-influenced are Mita tapahtuu todella? (“What really happens?”) (1962) and Aaneen (“Aloud”) (1966). According to my interpretation, Mita tapahtuu tod…

Carlo Scarpa a Palermo. Ambientare il pubblico: Palazzo Abatellis 1953-1954
2021
2020
In this paper I will outline a genealogy which could contribute to Siri Hustvedt’s very important statement in her essay Three Emotional Stories: Reflection on Memory, the Imagination, Narrative, and the Self (2011): ‘Writing fiction is remembering what never happened.’ Hustvedt’s essay offers a wonderful analysis of the role of memory and imagi- nation in narrative. But how to situate their very space in human behaviour and mind? Can we outline a topic of imagination in its relation with memory? I suggest that an appropriate blend between the long tradition of philosophical anthropology and the new neuroscientific interpretations of embodied simulation could help us to refine our concepts …
Paper bodies: Feminine Biopoetics in Margaret Cavendish Duchess of Newcastle
2012
In the debate between biopolitical and bioaesthetic approach the case of the literary – and performing – work acted by an English woman writer and natural philosopher lived between 1623 and 1673, could result really meaningful. The work and the whole life of Margaret Cavendish represents an interesting example of the ways in which biopolitical control on both bodies and minds could started to work in that period, and in which ways a woman like Cavendish could resist to both epistemic and physical violence by fighting a battle on two grounds, by means of her own artistic creations and her body expressions. Her physical or material artistic products could represent a result of which evolution…
Widerspruch als konstitutives Element der Wissensvermittlung in literarischen Texten des späten 16. Jahrhunderts
2019
In the second half of the sixteenth century, the transfer of knowledge is a con- flict situation: on the one hand, there is a generalised thirst for knowledge but, on the other, a fear of the circulation of new ideas on the part of both the secular and religious authorities. This was especially the case with regard to informa- tion related to the areas of medicine, astronomy, and alchemy-magic which was banned or censored. This paper argues that many authors relied on a Poetics of Contradiction in order to be able to transmit this information. Despite appa- rently opposing statements or thanks to their apparent opposition, they trans- mitted a meaningful message and allowed attentive, eliti…
Esclusione, parola, silenzio: Mariella Mehr
2019
The essay aims to present the poetic and narrative work of Mariella Mehr, an extraordinary witness of our time and one of the most significant poetic voices of contemporary German language literature. If the density of poetic language and the thematic choice bring Mehr clos- er to the very high examples of Celan, Sachs, Levi, the peculiar quality of writing, its rough perfection and the fiery temperature of the imagination make it unique in the prose of our time.
