Analytical solution for the solid angle subtended at any point by an ellipse via a point source radiation vector potential

An axially symmetric radiation vector potential is derived for a spherically symmetric point source. This vector potential is used to derive a line integral for the solid angle subtended at a point source by a detector of arbitrary shape and location. An equivalent line integral given previously by Asvestas for optical applications is derived using this formulation. The line integral can be evaluated in closed form for important cases, and the analytical solution for the solid angle subtended by an ellipse at a general point is presented. DOI measurement with monolithic scintillation crystals: A primary performance evaluation

We report a first assessment of image quality enhancement achieved by the implementation of depth of interaction detection with monolithic crystals. The method of interaction depth measurement is based on analogue computation of the standard deviation with an enhanced charge divider readout. This technique of depth of interaction detection was developed in order to provide fast and determination of this parameter at a reasonable increase of detector cost. The detector consists of an large-sized monolithic scintillator coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube. A special design feature is the flat-topped pyramidal shape of the crystal. Context: the observation of young stars with circumstellar disks suggests that the disks are dissipated, starting from the inner region, by the radiation of the central star and eventually by the formation of rocky planetesimals, over a time scale of several million years. It was also shown that strong UV radiation emitted by nearby massive stars can heat a circumstellar disk up to some thousand degrees, inducing the photoevaporation of the gas. This process strongly reduces the dissipation time scale. Achromatic fan-out diffractive system for white-light free-space optical interconnects

Abstract A simple and versatile white-light fan-out diffractive system based on the achromatization of the fractional Talbot effect is proposed. This achromatic configuration is able to interconnect a single polychromatic point source with a 2-D array of optoelectronic microdevices with low residual chromatic aberration even for white light. SU-FF-T-180: Dosimetric Characteristics of Tm-170 as a Radionuclide for Its Possible Use in Brachytherapy

In clinical brachytherapy several types of photon sources are used, mainly Cs‐137, Ir‐192, I‐125, and Pd‐103. The Tm‐170 is a promising radionuclide for use in brachytherapy because of the low mean‐energy (46.75 keV or 66.39 keV if the lines below 10 keV are removed) and the possible high specific activity (2.21×1014 Bq/g for a half life of 128.6 days). Tm‐170 is produced in a nuclear reactor by neutron absorption of the natural Tm‐169 and decays mainly via β‐emission. The maximum energies of the β‐rays are 0.290 and 0.323 MeV. Holographic interferometer with tunable radial and lateral displacement

The hologram of a point source, together with the real point source, is used to implement a simple holographic interferometer that can be tuned in its radial and/or lateral displacements. We show that our device is easy to use for creating cosinusoidal gratings and zone plates and for optical testing.

Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory for observation of early photons from gamma ray bursts

We describe the space project of Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) which will observe early optical photons from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with a sub-second optical response, for the first time. The UFFO will probe the early optical rise of GRBs, opening a completely new frontier in GRB and transient studies, using a fast response Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) that redirects optical path to telescope instead of slewing of telescopes or spacecraft. In our small UFFO-Pathfinder experiment, scheduled to launch aboard the Lomonosov satellite in 2012, we use a motorized mirror in our Slewing Mirror Telescope instrument to achieve less than one second optical response after X-ray trigger. Spiral conical approximations to double reflection Wolter optics

The design of a grazing incidence focusing optic obtained from a spiral approximation to multiple nested cones produces an annular image of a point source. The angular size of the annulus depends mainly on the pitch of the winding and the focal length. For a spiral conical approximation to Wolter optics, the effect is magnified by the double reflection. However, if the two conical spirals are wound one clock-wise and the other counter-clock-wise, then the aberration is partially compensated. All-diffractive achromatic Fourier-transform setup

An achromatic Fourier transformation under broadband converging spherical-wave illumination is optically achieved by use of only two on-axis blazed zone plates. The novel optical configuration provides the achromatic Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of an arbitrary input signal with adjustable magnification. Further analysis of the system permits us to obtain a simple analytical expression to evaluate both the longitudinal and the transversal residual chromatic aberration, resulting in a compact achromatic Fourier transformer with low chromatic errors, even for a wide spectral content of the point source.

White-light array generation with a diffractive lenslet array

Abstract In this paper we present two different optical configurations providing a white-light array generator based on a diffractive lenslet array (DLA). In both cases, starting from a white-light point source we achieve a regularly spaced set of sharp light spots by use of a single DLA and a small number of extra lenses (only one or two). The first optical system permits us to change the separation between the intensity peaks in a tunable way. The second is very compact and consists only of diffractive lens elements.
