The influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on Czech-Polish cross-border cooperation: From debordering to re-bordering?
2021
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to social behaviours in Europe. One of its major consequences was the temporary closure of borders, which was introduced as a measure to prevent the uncontrolled pandemic spreading and involved internal Schengen borders. This has had a major impact in the way in which cross-border cooperation has been conducted in Europe, including the Czech-Polish borderland, as it dramatically restrained all flows across borders. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the pandemic on five roles of cross-border cooperation: 1) as a multi-level governance form; 2) as a regional development tool; 3) as a para-diplomacy form; 4) as a post-conflict reconcil…

Towards understanding the abundance of non-pollen palynomorphs : A comparison of fossil algae, algal pigments and sedaDNA from temperate lake sedimen…
2018
Given the increased interest in non-pollen palynomorphs (microscopic objects other than pollen identified from pollen slides) in palaeoecological studies, it is necessary to seek a deeper understanding of the reliability of these results. We combined quantitative information of algal pigments and sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) of phylotaxonomical resolution to validate the richness and abundance of fossil algae in the sediment of a small temperate lake. For the first time, fossil and sedaDNA algae data were combined in a composite data-set and used to reconstruct algae turnover rates over the last 14,500 years. This comparison serves as both an example of howfossil algae can be used to a…

Communist Authorities Contra Brother Kloc. The Battlefront Against The Illegal Trade of Devotional Items in The Koźle District In 1965
2019

Why so much EURO-scepticism among Euro-enthusiasts?
2016
This paper addresses the intriguing situation in which there is an identified paradox inside the Polish society, namely strong Euro-enthusiasm combined with clear EURO-scepticism. The author of this article differentiates between EURO-scepticism and Euro-scepticism. Euro-scepticism is a recognised and extensively researched phenomenon across Europe, most generally conceptualised as a negative attitude towards the European integration process (in particular in the form of the European Union). EURO-scepticism, by contrast, is a much narrower category which can be characterised as a negative attitude towards the monetary integration on a supranational level, its deepening, participation in it,…
Euroscepticism of Euroenthusiastss

The author of this paper differentiates between EUROscepticism and Euroscepticism. Euroscepticism is a long - time recognized and widely researched phenomenon across Europe, most generally conceptualized as a negative attitude towards the European integration process, in particular in the form of the European Union. Whereas EUROscepticism is a much narrower category which can be defined as negative attitude towards the monetary integration on a supranational level, its deepening, participation in it, etc. As an illustrative example, here in this paper, serves Poland where we can observe an interesting paradox of an extremely pro-EU attitudes of the society combined with a strong anti-EURO s…
Species Composition and Structure of Beetle Associations in Caves of the Częstochowa Upland, Poland
2023
This paper presents the study’s results on beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) inhabiting caves in the Częstochowa Upland, southern Poland. During two years of research, 2084 specimens, representing 105 species from 19 beetle families, were collected. The obtained results indicate that many beetle species choose to inhabit caves despite lacking specific adaptations for living in such environments. The cave entrance zone is the most attractive place for surface species to inhabit because its climatic conditions are more stable than outside the cave, some sunlight is present, and the availability of organic matter is high. In the deeper parts of the studied caves, the number of occurring species ra…
Polarization and suburbanisation in Warsaw
2001
The economic transition in Poland leads to a restructuration of economic activities which affects spatial patterns of cities, especially in Warsaw. Analyzing the location and re-location of population and employment in Poland’s capital allows to enlarge the debate on the suburbanization forms to the Central and Oriental European Countries. The results support the fact that the city center is still largely the most important district in terms of population andemployment, so that in 1999 the city keeps a strong monocentric character. However, from 1994 to 1999, population and employment move towards the Warsaw’s suburbs. Two significant observations, namely the suburbanization of retailing an…
