Mood, cognitive structuring and medication adherence

2018

A study with a placebo was conducted. Healthy university students were given a placebo and were told to make one pill every day for a week. Participants were informed that the medicine improved mood. The extent to which they conformed to this instruction was treated as an index of compliance. Our results show that for women, but not for men, positive mood and cognitive structuring or negative mood and lack of cognitive structuring significantly predicted participants' compliance. A new model of medication adherence, based on the role of the patient's mood and cognitive structuring processes in decision making is presented in the paper.

Sexual Inhibition and Sexual Excitation Scales in Men: Psychometric Properties of a Polish Adaptation.

2020

AbstractThe present study aimed to develop a Polish version of the Sexual Inhibition/Sexual Excitation Scale (SIS/SES-PL) and explore its psychometric validity in a sample of 498 men aged between 18 and 55 years. We used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to obtain the best model fit. Out of the 45 items in the original scale, 32 items with eight subscales and three higher-order factors: (sexual excitation [SES], sexual inhibition due to performance failure [SIS1], and sexual inhibition due to performance consequences [SIS2]) were included in the SIS/SES-PL. The SIS/SES-PL was found to have a good and satisfactory fit (comparative fit index = .87; Tucker–Lewis Index = .85; root me…

Childhood Environment and Adult Height among Polish University Students

2010

The objective of the study is to assess whether the choice of a childcare type (i.e., a mother giving up a professional career to take care of her child, employing a childminder, day care centre and kindergarten) depends on a child's family socio-economic status and to investigate whether the childcare type affects an adult's height. The material for the study was gathered in the cross-section research carried out among 783 female students and 535 male students of universities in Krakow and Opole (southern Poland). The height was measured with standard anthropometric instruments. To assess a socio-economic status (SES), the following factors were analysed: a place of living before entering …

Prevalence of burnout in Polish anesthesiologists and anesthetist nursing professionals: A comparative non-randomized cross-sectional study.

2015

The purpose of the study was to assess the burnout levels in nurses ( N = 161) versus physicians ( N = 373). The levels of burnout were evaluated by the Polish adaptation of the Spanish Burnout Inventory (Cronbach’s alpha > .70). High burnout level was found in 18.63 percent nurses and 12.06 percent anesthesiologists, and critical level in 3.74 percent nurses and 5.90 percent anesthetists. There were statistically significant differences in Burnout global score, Enthusiasm toward the job, Psychological exhaustion, and Indolence subscales between nurses and physicians. No significant differences were found between sexes in any variable.

2020

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study is to present the treatment modalities and associated side effects in a Polish nation-wide ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) patients’ cohort. Materials and methods Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with AAV between 1990 and 2016, included in the POLVAS registry was performed. Standard descriptive statistic methods were used with an emphasis on the treatment modalities. Results There were 625 patients diagnosed with AAV included in this study: 417 cases of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; 66.7%), 106 cases of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA; 17.0%) and 102 cases of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA; 16.3%). Seasonal variations in the onset and healing rates of venous leg ulcers

2010

Objectives As many vascular pathologies exhibit circannual fluctuation, the aim of this study was to assess the chronobiological features of venous ulcers. Methods Based on a retrospective survey of the case histories of 391 venous ulcer patients, the rates of ulcer onset and healing in each month were analysed statistically; a time series was constructed to evaluate the seasonality. Results There was a significantly higher frequency of ulcer onset during the warmer part of the year (April–October), and onset showed strong seasonality. Healing rates were also unequally and statistically significantly distributed throughout the year: ulcers that appeared or that were treated with specialized…

Childhood Neglect: Exploring a Short Questionnaire in Poland and Germany

2013

Background: Estimates about childhood abuse and neglect in various countries of the world indicate that cases of neglect outnumber cases of abuse by far. However, childhood neglect itself constitutes a neglected domain in psychological and medical research; far more articles have been published about abuse. Sampling and Methods: A ten-item questionnaire assessing childhood neglect was administered to two surveys in Poland (n = 508) and Germany (n = 500) via the internet. Results: Internal consistency was high in both countries, i.e. Cronbach's α was 0.82 in Poland and 0.88 in Ge…

Steroids in Acute Spinal Cord Injury: All But Gone Within 5 Years.

2019

Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating event often leading to poor neurologic outcomes. One of the most widely practiced treatments has been the administration of methylprednisolone. However, today its use has been called into question over concerns of efficacy and safety. The present study evaluated the changes in the practice of steroid administration in acute SCI among members of the National Spinal Society in Poland in comparison with the results of the survey conducted in 2013. Methods The questionnaire, comprising 5 questions, was distributed among 240 spinal surgeons, members of the Polish Society of Spinal Surgery; of these, 97 (40%) responded. The results were compare…

2020

Background The purpose of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of the novel BeGraft covered stent for the treatment of abdominal penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU) or penetrating ulcers of the iliac arteries (PUIAs). Methods This was a single-center observational study, which included 24 consecutive patients who underwent endovascular surgery due to abdominal PAU or PUIA between June 2017 and September 2019. Demographics of patients, lesion characteristics, diameter and length of the BeGraft stents, and postoperative events were prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed. Follow-up examinations were performed at 1, 6, 12, and 24 months with clinical and hemodynamic e…
