The effect of spent bleaching earth ageing process on its physicochemical and microbial composition and its potential use as a source of fatty acids …
2014
This study was aimed at investigating the physicochemical and microbiological changes that took place during the ageing process of spent bleaching earth in the presence of autochthonous microorganisms. Research material included fresh spent bleaching earth (SBE0) and the same material after 3 years of storage at the constant temperature of 20 °C, without aeration and moistening (SBE3). Changes in the chemical composition of analysed waste material were observed during its ageing process point to a spontaneous bioconversion of fat substance towards formation and/or release of free saturated fatty acids C16:0 and C18:0 (14.3 g 100 g(-1) D.M.), triterpenes (8.48 g 100 g(-1) D.M.), cholesterol …
The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease among primary care patients in Poland : results from the LIPIDOGRAM2015 study
2020
BACKGROUND AND AIM: To estimate the prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) disease and CV risk factors among Polish patients.METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study, LIPIDOGRAM2015, was carried out in Poland in the 4th quarter of 2015 and 1st and 2nd quarters of 2016; 438 primary care physicians enrolled 13,724 adult patients that sought medical care in primary health care practices.RESULTS: Nearly 19% of men and approximately 12% of women had cardiovascular disease (CVD). Over 60% of the recruited patients had hypertension (HTN), >80% had dyslipidaemia and <15% of patients were diagnosed with diabetes (DM). All of these disorders were more frequent in men. In 80% of patients the waist…
Lipid-lowering therapy use in primary and secondary care in Central and Eastern Europe: DA VINCI observational study.
2021
Abstract Background and aims Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is a largely understudied region, despite having the highest cardiovascular disease mortality in Europe. This analysis aimed to assess the proportion of patients in CEE who achieved their LDL-C goals based on individual cardiovascular risk recommended by the 2016 and 2019 European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) guidelines. Methods The DA VINCI study was a cross-sectional observational study of primary and secondary prevention patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy across Europe between June 2017 and November 2018. Results In total, 2154 patients were enrolled from the Czech Republic (n = 509…
Chemometrics as a Tool of Origin Determination of Polish Monofloral and Multifloral Honeys
2014
The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of chemometrics studies to determine the botanical origin of Polish monofloral honeys using NMR spectroscopy. Aqueous extracts of six kinds of honeys, namely, heather (Calluna vulgaris L.), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L), lime (Tilia L), rape (Brassica napus L. var. napus), acacia (Acacia Mill.), and multifloral ones, were analyzed. Multivariate chemometric data analysis was performed using principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). Chemometric analysis supported by pollen analysis revealed the incorrect classification of acacia honeys by the producers. Characteristic moti…
The Impact of Environmental Conditions on Efficiency of Host Plant DNA Barcoding for Polyphagous Beetles.
2015
Recently, several papers were published dealing with host plant identification for selected species of insects, including beetles. These studies took advantage of the DNA barcoding approach and generally showed that it is possible to identify diet composition from plant DNA present in insect guts. However, none of these studies considered how the impact of environmental conditions affected the likelihood of insect feeding and, therefore, the presence of host plant DNA that could be amplified and sequenced. In the present study, individuals of the polyphagous weevil Centricnemus leucogrammus (Germar, 1824) (Curculionidae: Entiminae) were used to test the hypothesis that harsh environmental c…
Poly-Victimization in Polish Adolescents: Risk Factors and the Moderating Role of Coping.
2018
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of poly-victimization in Polish adolescents and assess factors associated with poly-victimization risk across different ecological levels. This study further examined whether coping styles could moderate the impact of poly-victimization on emotional well-being. Participants were 454 adolescents, aged between 13 and 19 years, from an urban region of Poland. Adolescents completed self-report measures assessing community, school, and family risks, along with a peer nomination task measuring social preference. Teachers also completed a measure assessing adolescent problem behaviors. Findings revealed that the majority of the sample (70%) experience…
Childhood Adversities and Adult Headache in Poland and Germany.
2015
Objective Various childhood adversities have been found to be associated with chronic pain in adulthood. However, associations were moderate in most studies, i.e. odds ratios (OR) were between one and two. Method An internet survey was performed in 508 Polish and 500 German subjects. A total of 19 childhood adversities were selected and their associations with headaches explored. Age, gender and country were included as potential confounders, as well as their two-way interaction with the risk factors. Results Two strong risk factors were identified. (1) A combined score for physical and emotional neglect showed an odds ratio (OR) of 2.78 (p < .002) to the frequency of headache in adulthood …
The Chinese as targets in Polish humorous discourse
2019
Abstract The paper discusses contemporary Polish humor which features references to Chinese language and culture. Together with the ideological, political, financial and economic visibility of China, its presence in Polish humorous discourse is on the rise. Jokes, cabaret sketches and visual materials, such as memes, more and more frequently use the Chinese as targets for entertaining the audience. The article will analyze the instances of Polish humorous discourse (largely Internet memes) to show which are the most frequent specific stereotypes about the Chinese and how that relates to Davies’s models of target choice. The results suggest that Polish humor about the Chinese as an untypical…
BRIDGING THE NATION AND THE STATE: CATHOLIC CHURCH IN POLAND AS POLITICAL ACTOR
2020
One of the most recognized features of social-political reality in Poland is the role of Catholicism as the determinant of national-political identity and of Catholic Church as the influential political actor. Being undoubtedly peculiar Polish case can be viewed as the example of the religiosity intertwined with national and civil identity existent in different forms in the CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) region. The article aims at casting specifics of Polish case in the wider context of religious-political nexus in CEE stressing the distinctness of the region compared to some other parts of Europe. The conducted analysis focuses on the evolution of Church-state relations in Poland displa…
Nowe dane o rozmieszczeniu 50 gatunków ryjkowców (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) w Polsce
2016
Fifty weevil species have been recorded from new localities in Poland. They belong to four families: Anthribidae (1), Apionidae (6), Nanophyidae (2) and Curculionidae (41). The new records, 124 in all, are from 64 UTM squares (10×10 km) in 17 of 24 regions of Poland, according to the division adopted from the Catalogus Faunae Poloniae issued in 1971-2000. Nearly half of them (57) are first records for a region. The largest numbers of the new records are from the Małopolska Upland (13), the Pomeranian Lakeland (8), Upper Silesia (7) and the Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Lowland (5). Kyklioacalles navieresi (Boh.) has been recorded from Poland for the first time, whereas K. roboris (Curtis) has been …
