The Influence of the Fir Absorption on the Dielectric Behaviour of Rigid Polar Molecules in Very Dilute Solutions

In view of the FIR absorption the dielectric loss of ten polar molecules — with different volume between furan and 4-bromobiphenyl — has been measured in very dilute solutions at 11 fixed frequencies over an extended range from 0.3 to 300 GHz. Solvents are heptane, cyclohexane, mesitylene, and decalin. For these rigid polar molecules a second high frequency absorption region with time constants of 1–3 ps can be separated from the predominant Debye absorption. This additional absorption decreases with increasing Debye relaxation time. Various molecular motions contributing to this absorption are discussed.

Like in all other Metazoa, also in sponges (Porifera) proliferation, differentiation, and death of cells are controlled by apoptotic processes, thus allowing the establishment of a Bauplan (body plan). The demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis from the Lake Baikal is especially suitable to assess the role of the apoptotic molecules, since its grade of construction is highly elaborated into an encrusting base and branches composed of modules lined up along the apical-basal axis. The four cDNAs, ALG-2, BAK, MA-3, and Bcl-2, were isolated from this sponge species. The expression levels of these genes follow characteristic gradients. Influence of solvents on conformation of dehydropeptides

Abstract Structural investigations of dehydropeptides containing (Z)-dehydrophenylalanine in solvents characterized by different polarity are discussed. The conformational analysis are based on spectroscopic methods (NMR, CD), molecular modeling techniques and in case of the tripeptide, ab initio methods. The results of temperature experiment indicate, that the only conformation of the investigated hexapeptide 3 is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Depending on the length of the peptide chain, the polarity of solvent influences on arrangement of the side chain of the amino acids or of the main chain of the peptide.
Two-dimensional electrical ordering in physisorbed monolayers

Abstract Monolayers of polar molecules CF3H, CF3Cl and CF2Cl2 have been physisorbed on the graphite (001) surface and studied by X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements. The temperature-coverage phase diagrams of the quasitwodimensional crystalline phases are presented. The structures of the paraelectric and the electrically ordered phases have been determined. The phase transitions are discussed.

Dorsal/ventral (DV) patterning of the sea urchin embryo relies on a ventrally-localized organizer expressing Nodal, a pivotal regulator of the DV gene regulatory network. However, the inceptive mechanisms imposing the symmetry-breaking are incompletely understood. In Paracentrotus lividus, the Hbox12 homeodomain-containing repressor is expressed by prospective dorsal cells, spatially facing and preceding the onset of nodal transcription. The final size of the central nervous system is determined by precisely controlled generation, proliferation and death of neural stem cells. We show here that the Drosophila PAK protein Mushroom bodies tiny (Mbt) is expressed in central brain progenitor cells (neuroblasts) and becomes enriched to the apical cortex of neuroblasts in a cell cycle- and Cdc42-dependent manner. Using mushroom body neuroblasts as a model system, we demonstrate that in the absence of Mbt function, neuroblasts and their progeny are correctly specified and are able to generate different neuron subclasses as in the wild type, but are impaired in their proliferation activity throughout development. Abstract During murine development, the formation of tight junctions and acquisition of polarity are associated with allocation of the blastomeres on the outer surface of the embryo to the trophoblast lineage, whereas the absence of polarization directs cells to the inner cell mass. In polarized MDCK cells, proteins and lipids are sorted in the trans-Golgi network /TGN) and packaged into different vesicular carriers that are delivered to the apical or basolateral cell surface.
