Nonintrusive monitoring and quantitative analysis of strong laser-field-induced impulsive alignment

We report the observation of impulsive alignment of $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ molecules produced through their interaction with a nonresonant, strong laser pulse. The periodic alignment is monitored using a polarization technique generally employed in optical Kerr effect experiments; the birefringence produced by alignment of the molecular sample is measured with a weak pulse, time-delayed with respect to the alignment pulse. The technique provides a signal proportional to $⟨{\mathrm{cos}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\theta}⟩\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{3}$, where $\ensuremath{\theta}$ is the polar angle between the molecular axis and the strong-field polarization axis. The impact of GABAergic transmission on neuronal excitability depends on the Cl--gradient across membranes. However, the Cl--fluxes through GABAA receptors alter the intracellular Cl- concentration ([Cl-]i) and in turn attenuate GABAergic responses, a process termed ionic plasticity. Recently it has been shown that coincident glutamatergic inputs significantly affect ionic plasticity. Yet how the [Cl-]i changes depend on the properties of glutamatergic inputs and their spatiotemporal relation to GABAergic stimuli is unknown. Abstract The spin density distribution in transition metal complexes is discussed in qualitative terms, taking into account the coexistence of spin delocalization and spin polarization mechanisms, with the help of numerical results for several complexes obtained from density functional calculations. The covalent character of the metal-ligand bonds as well as the σ- or π-characteristics of the partially filled d orbitals must be taken into account to qualitatively predict the sign of the spin density at a particular atom within a ligand. Abstract A novel series of copper(II) complexes of formula [Cu(tren)(mpda)](ClO4)2 · 1/2H2O (1), [Cu2(tren)2(mpda)](ClO4)4 · 2H2O (2), and [Cu2(tren)2(ppda)](ClO4)4 · 2H2O (3) containing the tetradentate tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) terminal ligand and the potentially bridging 1,n-phenylenediamine [n = 3 (mpda) and 4 (ppda)] ligand have been prepared and spectroscopically characterized. Femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering polarization beat spectroscopy of I2–Xe complex in solid krypton

Time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering (CARS) measurements are carried out to study the interaction between xenon atom and iodine molecule in a solid krypton matrix. Interference between the CARS polarizations of the "free" and complexed iodine molecules is observed, while the quantum beats of the complex are not detected due to low concentration. Vibrational analysis based on the polarization beats yields accurate molecular constants for the I2-Xe complex. The harmonic frequency of the I2-Xe complex is found to be redshifted by 0.90 cm-1 when compared to the free I2, whereas the anharmonicity is approximately the same.
