The3He neutron spin filter at ILL

1997

Abstract Neutron Spin-Filters (NSF) using gaseous polarized 3He have long been recognized as having enormous potential value in many polarized neutron scattering applications and, accordingly, ILL started a development program some years ago. This report gives an account of the present status of the project. Let us first briefly recall the reasons why the 3He-NSF is desirable as a generic polarization tool: Being a pure transmission device, NSF naturally decouples the neutron spin selection from other optical functions. Designing polarized instruments will be simplified having no geometrical constraints due to Bragg optics or beam deviation in the polarizer. Angular acceptance and energy ba…

A universal all-fiber omnipolarizer

2013

The all-optical control of light polarization is nowadays a fundamental issue which finds important applications in optical networks. In this field, the research has moved on the development of nonlinear methods of re-polarization of a partially coherent and initially depolarized light [1]. The main drawback of most of these devices is that they suffer from a large amount of output Relative-Intensity-Noise (RIN). However, a class of polarizers have been recently proposed which is based on the nonlinear interaction between two optical beams counter-propagating in a fiber [2]: in these devices the arbitrary state of polarization (SOP) of one of the two beams (signal) is attracted towards a sp…

A single hologram technique for the determination of absolute retardations in holographic photoelasticity

1975

A method for the determination of the absolute retardations families in photoelasticity. The method, which use real-time holographic interferometry, requires only one hologram for the observation of the absolute retardations over the whole model. This is achieved by viewing in the reconstruction process the loaded model through a polarizer. Where the polarization direction is parallel to one of the principal stresses, only the corresponding family of absolute retardations is observed. As an example of application the absolute retardations and stresses in a deep beam centrally loaded are determined.

Synchronization of Two Photoelastic Light Modulators to Obtain Müeller Matrix

2013

We report a method for the temporal synchronization of two photoelastic light modulators. For synchronizing, we used the transistor-transistor logic output signals from each modulator, which contain the information on the light polarization. These signals were introduced in a phase-detector circuit, which provided the phase difference value between both modulators. Three optical devices were used to test the synchronization method proposed: a polarizer, a half-wave, and a quarter-wave retarder plate. The value of each of the elements of the Mueller matrix for these devices was obtained using the method of the 36 measurements. The results show a high correlation between the theoretical and e…

<title>Polarization-optical visualization of eye inhomogeneities</title>

2000

Polarization sensitive technique is reported for visualization of eye scattering and birefringent inhomogeneities using digital subtracting of eye images captured by a CCD camera for two orthogonal polarizations of light forming images in the CCD camera. For fast capturing of images the polarization plane of the backscattered light is periodically switched at 90 degrees by an electro-optical PLZT phase plate. This plate is placed close to the CCD camera together with a sheet polarizer inserted between camera and the phase plate. Polarization plane is switched applying the voltage 1200 V to the phase plate at a rate of 7.5 Hz. The technique improves visualization due to diminishing of the im…

Transmission and phase measurement for polarization eigenvectors in twisted-nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulators

1998

Recently we published theoretical expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for a twisted-nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) as a function of the twist angle and birefringence using the Jones matrix formalism. These polarization eigenvectors are of interest for newer video graphics adapter (VGA) resolution (640 3480 pixels) LCSLMs that are thinner and consequently have a lower birefringence. Although these devices can produce excellent amplitude modulation, they cannot achieve phase-only modulation using linearly polarized light. In these cases, the polarization eigenvectors are required to obtain phase-only modulation. We present experimental measurements for bot…

Realization of a broad-band neutron spin filter with compressed, polarized 3He gas

1997

The strongly spin-dependent absorption of neutrons in nuclear spin polarized 3He opens the possibility to polarize beams of thermal and epithermal neutrons. An effective 3He neutron spin filter (NSF) requires high 3He nuclear polarization as well as a filter thickness corresponding to amount of gas in the order of 1 bar 1. We realized such a filter using direct optical pumping of metastable 3He∗ atoms in a 3He plasma at 1 mb. Metastable exchange scattering transfers the angular momentum to the whole ensemble of 3He atoms. At present 3.6 × 1018 3He-atoms s−1 are polarized up to 68%. Subsequent polarization preserving compression by a two-stage compressor system enables to prepare NSF cells o…

Dissipative soliton resonance in a passively mode-locked fiber laser

2011

The phenomenon of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) predicts that an increase of pulse energy by orders of magnitude can be obtained in laser oscillators. Here, we prove that DSR is achievable in a realistic ring laser cavity using nonlinear polarization evolution as the mode-locking mechanism, whose nonlinear transmission function is adjusted through a set of waveplates and a passive polarizer. The governing model accounts explicitly for the arbitrary orientations of the waveplates and the polarizer, as well as the gain saturation in the amplifying medium. It is shown that DSR is achievable with realistic laser settings. Our findings provide an excellent design tool for optimizing the mo…

Extract information of polarization imaging from local matching stereo

2010

Since polarization of light was used in the field of computer vision, the research of polarization vision is rapidly growing. Polarization vision has been shown to simplify some important image understanding tasks that can be more difficult to be performed with intensity vision. Furthermore, it has computational efficiency because it only needs grayscale images and can be easily applied by a simple optical setup. Nowadays, we can find various types of polarization cameras in the market. However, they are very expensive. In our work, we will study and develop a low price polarization camera setup with parallel acquisition using a stereo system. This system requires only two general cameras e…
