Public Health Policy to Tackle Social Health Inequalities: A Balancing Act Between Competing Institutional Logics

2020

Kvale and colleagues examine the logics of Norwegian government initiatives to respond to social inequalities in health. Whereas the individualist logic favors bounded and specialized measures and organization, the collectivist logic favors broad approaches and organizational coordination. A content analysis of Norwegian health policy documents between 2003 and 2017 shows how such specialized and integrative measures and structures are alternately introduced and hence create a pattern of priorities to tackle public health challenges alternating between a collectivist and an individualist logic. They argue that reform of service coordination to tackle social inequalities in health requires a…

The Use of NFP When Pregnancy Is Contraindicated?

2020

The Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has declared the moral liceity of hysterectomy when certain medical criteria are met but does not exclude other options, “for example, recourse to infertile periods or total abstinence.” Consequently, there may be couples who prefer to use natural family planning (NFP) methods. We shall refer to these in this article. The efficacy of NFP methods is determined by knowing the day of ovulation. To that end, three parameters are used: the presence and consistency of cervical mucus, measurement of the basal body temperature, and the determination of particular hormones in urine. Of the NFP methods used, the so-called sympto-thermal method se…

Defining and Assessing Public Health Functions: A Global Analysis.

2016

Given the broad scope and intersectoral nature of public health structures and practices, there are inherent difficulties in defining which services fall under the public health remit and in assessing their capacity and performance. The aim of this study is to analyze how public health functions and practice have been defined and operationalized in different countries and regions around the world, with a specific focus on assessment tools that have been developed to evaluate the performance of essential public health functions, services, and operations. Our review has identified nearly 100 countries that have carried out assessments, using diverse analytical and methodological approaches. …

[Insight on how to assess and improve the response to the COVID-19 pandemic].

2022

Failure mode and effects analysis of skin electronic brachytherapy using Esteya® unit

2016

Purpose: Esteya® (Nucletron, an Elekta company, Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) is an electronic brachytherapy device used for skin cancer lesion treatment. In order to establish an adequate level of quality of treatment, a risk analysis of the Esteya treatment process has been done, following the methodology proposed by the TG-100 guidelines of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). Material and methods: A multidisciplinary team familiar with the treatment process was formed. This team developed a process map (PM) outlining the stages, through which a patient passed when subjected to the Esteya treatment. They identified potential failure modes (FM) and each individual FM…

Rare dyslipidaemias, from phenotype to genotype to management: a European Atherosclerosis Society task force consensus statement

2020

Genome sequencing and gene-based therapies appear poised to advance the management of rare lipoprotein disorders and associated dyslipidaemias. However, in practice, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of these disorders are common, in large part due to interindividual variability in the genetic causes and phenotypic presentation of these conditions. To address these challenges, the European Atherosclerosis Society formed a task force to provide practical clinical guidance focusing on patients with extreme concentrations (either low or high) of plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The task force also recognises the scarcity of qua…

Patterns of care and cost profiles of women with breast cancer in Italy: EPICOST study based on real world data

2020

Objectives To estimate total direct health care costs associated to diagnosis and treatment of women with breast cancer in Italy, and to investigate their distribution by service type according to the disease pathway and patient characteristics. Methods Data on patients provided by population-based Cancer Registries are linked at individual level with data on health-care services and corresponding claims from administrative databases. A combination of cross-sectional approach and a threephase of care decomposition model with initial, continuing and final phases-of-care defined according to time occurred since diagnosis and disease outcome is adopted. Direct estimation of cancer-related cost…
