Influence of applied strain on the microstructural corrosion of AlMg2 as-cast aluminium alloy in sodium chloride solution
2012
International audience; The corrosion behavior of ISO AlMg2 (AA5052) was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique. The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion resistance of this alloy was also examined. After polishing, pitting at small copper-enriched precipitates and structural etching were observed. After deformation, numerous slip bands were found in grains. After 5.5% plastic strain, the global electrochemical behavior of samples was significantly affected. Pitting potential was decreased in sites containing slip bands or in sites with large strain gradients (measured using microgauges deposited by lithography).
A Mechanical–Electrochemical Approach for the Determination of Precursor Sites for Pitting Corrosion at the Microscale
2006
International audience; The influence of metallurgical defects and residual surface stresses generated by polishing on the pitting susceptibility of duplex stainless steels was studied by combining macro- and microelectrochemical measurements with thermal-mechanical simulation and metallography tests. It has been shown that pits initiate in both phases at metallurgical point defects (such as oxide inclusions in the ferrite and dislocation lines in the austenite). By contrast, the surface stress state was the driving force for pit initiation along the austenite/ferrite interface. Experiments at the macroscale revealed that this process represents about 40% of the total number of pits observe…
Effect of professional dental prophylaxis on the surface gloss and roughness of CAD/CAM restorative materials
2017
Background This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dental prophylaxis on the surface gloss and roughness of different indirect restorative materials for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM): two types of CAD/CAM composite resin blocks (Shofu Block HC and Estelite Block) and two types of CAD/CAM ceramic blocks (IPS Empress CAD and Celtra DUO). Material and methods After polishing the CAD/CAM blocks and applying prophylaxis pastes, professional dental prophylaxis was performed using four different experimental protocols (n = 5 each): mechanical cleaning with Merssage Regular for 10 s four times (Group 1); four cycles of mechanical cleaning with Merssage Regular for …
The evaluation of surface sealants effect on the color stability of Nano-hybrid composite after polishing with One-Step system (in-vitro)
2018
Background The clinical use of composite resins has increased substantially over the past few years due to increased esthetic demands by patients, improvements in formulation, and simplification of bonding procedures. An alternative for preventing or reducing composite discoloration is using of composite surface sealant. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of surface sealant on color-stability of Nano-hybrid composites after polishing with one-step system. Material and Methods 56 disk-shaped specimens (10*2 mm) of a Nano-hybrid composite resin (VOCO,Cuxhaven,Germany) were prepared. The specimens were randomly divided in to 2 groups of 28 specimens each. The surfaces of spe…
Effectiveness of some protective and self-cleaning treatments: a challenge for the conservation of temple G stone in Selinunte
2021
Abstract The Temple G of the Archaeological Park of Selinunte (Italy), the largest in Europe, is one of the most impressive temples in the Magna Grecia. Today, it is completely destroyed due to a strong earthquake occurred in the Middle Ages. The used stone is a calcarenite coming from the ancient and renowned quarries of Cusa near the acropolis. This work comes from the today’s proposal of Temple G anastylosis. The goal of the work is to provide the results relating the protective effectiveness of three polymer formulations, appropriately selected, on stone samples taken from the “Capitello” quarry, part of “Cusa quarries”. The formulations functionality was deployed by adding TiO2 nanopar…
Effect of finishing and polishing systems on the surface roughness and color change of composite resins
2020
Background This study is to examine the surface roughness and color changes occurring on composite resins following the application of different finishing and polishing systems. Material and Methods In our study, a total of 200 samples were prepared from composites resin (6×2 mm) containing supra-nano, submicron hybrid, nanohybrid, nano-ceramic and microhybrid filler. They were polished with diamond, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide finishing and polishing systems. The initial color values of composite samples were measured with a spectrophotometer and surface roughness values with a profilometer. After that, samples were immersed of coffee solution and color measurements were repeated on th…
Influence of long-term ageing in solution containing chloride ions on the passivity and the corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steels
2011
Abstract The influence of long-term ageing in NaCl on the passivity and the electrochemical behavior of UNS S32304 is studied. The passive film thickness, the Cr/Fe ratio and the chloride content were significantly increased after ageing. The chloride distribution depends on residual stresses, sample microstructure and surface preparation. Local electrochemical measurements revealed that pitting potentials are between 250–550 mV vs. SCE after electropolishing. The higher the chloride content, the lower the local pitting potential. It was also shown that the presence of chloride was balanced by the enrichment in chromium after ageing. Then no pitting potential could be measured.
Evaluation of surface roughness of enamel after various bonding and clean-up procedures on enamel bonded with three different bonding agents : an in-…
2016
Background The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the enamel surface roughness before bonding and after debonding, to find correlation between the adhesive remnant index and its effect on enamel surface roughness and to evaluate which clean-up method is most efficient to provide a smoother enamel surface. Material and methods 135 premolars were divided into 3 groups containing 45 premolars in each group. Group I was bonded by using moisture insensitive primer, Group II by using conventional orthodontic adhesive and Group III by using self-etching primer. Each group was divided into 3 sub-groups on the basis of type of clean-up method applied i,e scaling followed by polishing, …
Controlling the intralayer structure of Co/Pt superlattices
1999
Abstract The effect of the surface quality of MgO (1 1 1) substrates seeded by a 3 nm thick Pt layer on the intralayer and interlayer structure of Co/Pt (1 1 1) superlattices was investigated. The superlattices were grown by DC magnetron sputtering. Pre-growth processing of the MgO shows that intensive polishing using a specific H 2 O/SiO 2 suspension prior to growth is mandatory for obtaining long-range structural coherence in the films. The comparison between superlattices grown on re-polished and as-supplied substrates shows that the substrate treatment enhances the crystalline in-plane orientation and suppresses abc / acb twin formation. Magnetization measurements were performed using t…
Influence of the microstructure and laser shock processing (LSP) on the corrosion behaviour of the AA2050-T8 aluminium alloy
2011
International audience; The corrosion behaviour of AA2050-T8 was studied after polishing and after laser shock processing (LSP) treatment using the electrochemical microcell technique and the SVET. After polishing, pitting at constituent particles and intergranular corrosion were observed. By contrast, no intergranular corrosion developed after LSP. Microcell measurements revealed that LSP increases the pitting potential. SVET measurements revealed that local anodic currents are systematically lower on LSP-treated surfaces than on polished ones. The current density on the LSP-treated surface remains constant around 50 μA cm−2 up to 123 min after immersion, while on the polished surface it r…
